    The communication hasn’t been too great, but the first email and guidance about this came on 23 December, which forewarned of the b2b system being replaced at the end of the year. Diagrams and discounts were missing on SMART for me for the first few days, but after a couple of emails to uk_tradeorders@whirlpool.com, everything was sorted for me a few days ago. My only gripe, which is hopefully temporary, is that the new system is very slow.

    Overall, the new system is a big improvement – it links straight into Servicenet so info is bang up to date. Data is specific to Industrial codes rather than models, so far more accurate. There are clear “up to” and “from” dates to enable serial number dependent parts to be identified quickly. Superseded parts automatically link through to the new part number instead of showing as “out of stock” as was the case with B2B.

    I’ve only sent one part back since the customs change, via Coventry, middle of last year, which was problem free (and no restocking charge). I was under the impression that the Coventry Office was a “virtual” office used mainly for mail forwarding, but I may be wrong.

    I nearly always use the DHL option, with at least 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of Paris stock arriving next day and Germany stock relayed across one or two days later.

    It could be worse – Miele are quoting 7 working days for parts deliveries now. My order from Miele 8 days ago is still not despatched… I find most customers understand times are difficult if you keep them in the loop, but unforeseen delays do play havoc with schedules.

    Re the aluminium, we had some hard anodised aluminium saucepans that we put through the dishwasher many times. Gradually, the anodised surface discoloured and eventually non-existent. They looked terrible, but structurally they remained fine. That would have been at higher temperatures and detergent concentrations than seen in your average washing machine cycle. So I doubt the occasional dishwasher tablet would do much structural harm to the drum spider, likely less harm than the damp sludge it is intended to remove.

    I don’t think we really know – we are not chemists. My opinion is that you are better off using a specific washing machine cleaner, especially one marketed or endorsed by an appliance manufacturer. Bosch in America and Australia seem to be the only manufacturers that have come out publicly against using dishwasher tablets in a washing machine, while promoting their own washing machine cleaning products, while they don’t really say why.

    I only stock Electrolux Super Clean, which seems quite effective at removing the sludgy deposits that cause most problems in washing machines. Unfortunately, they reformulated it a few years back from a 2-stage to 1-stage cleaner, omitting the powerful enzyme pre-treatment, which was fantastic. I suspect they found most users found the 2-stage process cumbersome, didn’t follow the instructions properly and so didn’t get the best results.

    I suspect dishwasher tablets do less harm to washing machines than muddy boots do to a dishwasher, or some of the other crazy suggestions promoted online.

    Apparently until around the year 2000, Miele used stainless steel spiders, then switched to aluminium, as least on domestic machines:

    I think it depends on the type of work provider and the nature of the contract. If it’s a one-off job, the contractor’s normal rates should apply. If it’s a more regular work stream the rates should be agreed by negotiation between the parties. I personally wouldn’t accept work at anything below my normal rates. It is generally not a good idea for a contractor to become overly reliant on a single work provider, much better to build a diverse customer base, these days greatly facilitated with a decent website and Google local business listing.

    This is complete nonsense – how can a bit of fluff on the bearing create a burning smell? The smell will have been due to a bit of disturbed dust having got blown onto the heater during the next cycle – an inevitable temporary by-product of clearing loose dust from airways.

    As for grease, this may no longer be considered necessary on current Hotpoint dryers, but perhaps if they did use it, the pathetic undersized bearings and shafts they use might just last a little longer. Hotpoint still list their bearing grease C00250321 as a part for virtually all pre-2005 Hotpoint dryers. I still use a tube of this that I bought in 2005.

    The beige powdery stuff I would guess is limescale and the grey sludgy stuff a corrosion byproduct of aluminium. Poor airflow due to blocked condenser and/or fan blades is likely a contributory factor. This of course affects all makes of washer dryer, not just Miele.

    Thanks Dave. For me Qualtex orders are still working OK. My order from midday arrived by Royal Mail Tracked 24 on Saturday, so not too bad, but again no paperwork in the box. Luckily, invoices are available on my account. Maybe they will get round to providing email addresses to Royal Mail when they book the collection so we get some idea of when to expect the delivery.

    From memory, remove rear duct, release belt tension, remove back panel complete with drum, remove duct covers, remove motor, thread belt around motor, reassemble. But I must admit, doing all makes and types, I tend figure out each as I go along.

    It goes without saying that customers are of course at liberty to use hidden (or not so hidden) cameras in their homes while we are working, so we need to always act as if we are being watched!
