    Sharp is a Vestel brand – similar design details to their Turkish rival Beko, and arguably similar durability, but relatively limited parts availability.

    Sadly Whirpool’s current dishwasher range seems to comprise rebranded Indesit/Hotpoint machines. I’m assuming they decommissioned the old Whirlpool dishwasher priduction line a year or two back to reduce costs.

    It is not all doom and gloom. We always despair at the reliability of the lastest machines, but I guarantee, in 10 to 15 years time, we’ll be singing their praises. Beko are good for the price, but cable management in the door is a weak point. Dare I say it, the latest platforms from Midea and Haier look surprisingly solid. Hotpoint/Indesit/Whirlpool are also not bad these days. Zanussi/AEG are pretty decent, now that the pressure sensor issue has been resolved. Bosch/Siemens/Neff are pretty good, if you avoid the mainstream plastic tubbed versions, which are prone to leakage. For the best durability and performance, choose Miele, the only volume manufacturer not to have compromised on engineering quality.

    Qualtex are probably snowed under like everyone else at the moment. (Are enquiries and bookings as crazily high since 1 January as they have been for me?) I suspect when push comes to shove, their ebay outlet LM Electrical has to take priority. With 99.7{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} positive feedback from 1.6 million ratings they are well ahead of Connect’s wow discounts outlet – 99.5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} postitive feedback from 0.15 million ratings, so they must be doing something right. They can’t afford to let their ebay sellers down, as a reduction in their feedback profile could be very damaging to their sales.

    Connect seem to focus more on their powerful espares brand, with those cheerful (and overly-simplified) how-to videos and late (8.30pm) cut-off for next-day delivery designed to entice a technically-minded, time-poor but relatively prosperous clientele, with freebies such as fridge magnets and free pens to encourage brand loyalty.

    It would seem a bit odd for Rangemaster to give service work to its arch rival, unless this is part of a wider strategic partnership designed to mitigate the effects of a shrinking range cooker market.

    Vert de gris and loss of insulation on copper wiring is a possible indicator of a bad connection, but water leaks or condensation could also be an explanation. But surely if the appliance has been through flames and doused with a fire hose, how can you tell if this is the cause of the result of the fire?

    Even if this was down to a bad connection, to suggest the good old Tyco/Amp spade connector is somehow indicative of a design weakness, is not helpful. These are surely the most tried and tested, reliable and safest connectors around, capable of carrying much higher loadings than encountered on a fridge.

    There is no liability here. Unless you pressurised the tank when flushing it, you cannot have caused the crack.This was a sudden unforeseen escape of water as covered by most home buildings insurance policies. The customer needs to claim on their policy. As goodwill, I would offer to refund what you charged to replace the filter, but no more. The tank would likley have failed soon anyway.

    With the drum problem appearing only a month after you fitted the door seal, the customer is bound to suspect that you somehow caused the problem, regardless of the reality. I would offer to refund what they paid for you to renew the door seal, less a reasonable diagnositic fee.

    It may not be just the slight play in the drum bearings. I remember an integrated Bosch washing machine I repaired a few years ago with similar build date that was contacting the door seal. This was caused by sludgy corrosion on the drum spider forcing the inner drum forward. The (wealthy elderly) customer didn’t want to be bothered with sourcing a new machine so paid me a substantial sum to renew the relevant drum parts. Despite clearly being a top quality part, the spider had suffered as a result of the door never having been left open after the wash.

    If it’s the one I think you are talking about (£635 RRP, special order only), Connect suggest a Gorenje alternative (£141 RRP, stock item, discounted price to you should be cheaper).

    Thanks all, I’m gradually figuring out how the search facility works. I understand the issue with short strings, but my query was also about wildcards, ie using a special character such as * to search for multiple endings of a word. For example. on the old system I could search for WAE2* to find posts containing any one of the hundreds of Bosch WAE2..”. washing machine models. Is there anything similar available on the new platform?

    Might that be German company ASWO? They seem to be big elsewhere in Europe and Connect would give them a quick route to dominance in the UK market, also saving them the expense of shipping to uk customers next day from their Paris warehouse, which must be a significant overhead for them at the moment.

    But aren’t Dyson equipped with filters that clog up a lot worse than bags, just at a slower rate? When customers lend me their Dyson to defluff a dryer, I generally find they have incredibly poor suction.

    Is there any way to include a wildcard in search or to search for posts containing more than one word, eg F3* (model range) AND turbidity (fault)?

    Well, it seems everything is ticking over after all at Homespares. After getting a little tired of the rather poor search facility on their new site, and unattractive prices, I finally plucked up the courage to put an item in my shopping basket, and was surprised to find the price in the basket quite a bit lower than shown in the search. So the price displayed in the search apparently doesn’t reflect any discount applied to the account. Before long I had built a reasonable basket of stock items with good prices, and DPD will be delivering my first order from their new website tomorrow.

    So if you’ve not used Homespares for a while, do persevere with the new site, try putting a few items in your basket, and you might be pleasantly surprised by the prices you see. I do hope they get their website gremlins sorted, as we need more healthy competition between suppliers.
