    Re: Dishwasher smell

    Do you use rinse-aid?

I wonder if you have an excess of hydrogen sulphide gas dissolved in your water supply. Have you noticed a similar smell when boiling a kettle, or running a bath?

The combi-boiler could be contributing to a concentration in the dishwasher, whereas the old copper cylinder would have allowed the vapours to vent out into the atmosphere, before getting anywhere near the machine. Sadly, a cold feed to the machine might have the same result as the combi-boiler… ๐Ÿ™

    Re: Dyson DC01 Belt Breaking

The agitator brush has a raised, bevelled section on which the belt runs. Through use, this has a tendency to wear. This can cause the belt to drift across and cause the problems you describe.

In this scenario, a new agitator is required. Best contact Dyson, as there were variants as to the type of ends employed.

    Re: Bosch goes bang twice

    Hi,

It might not be the machine itself; it may be a faulty wall socket.

Someone else on this forum had bangs coming from their machine. It turned out to be a lack of earthing to the wall socket.

My advice is call an electrician to check the socket, before considering calling for a machine repairer.

    Re: Dishwasher smell

I wonder if your troubles are being caused by greasy residues in the drain pipes within the machine.

    Try using a dishwasher cleaner. They come in various forms, such as Finish Dishwasher Cleaner;
    Sainsbury’s Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets;
    or other supermarkets’ own versions.

They have to be used on a programme that is between 60-70 degrees Celsius. They are designed to shift any grease, and also combat any limescale that may have settled in the dishwasher. You may have to repeat this every few months.

I too have noticed a smell coming from dishes. It seems to come from certain detergents and /or rinse-aids, probably in combination with food-soils and grease.

Through trial and error, I’ve found that Finish or Fairy detergent; and Finish rinse-aid, seem to offer the best cleaning and are less likely to taint crockery.

The liquid-gel detergents on sale in the shops still employ the chlorine-based bleaching agents, which perform better on tea stains.

The old chlorine based powders are also still available, but only through certain shops (farmer’s supply shops, Cash’n’Carry, etc.). This style of detergent is now classed as “Professional”, and sold under familiar names: “SUN”, “FINISH”, “BRYTA”.

It sounds as though the computer has gone dippy…!

Might be best to contact Miele, as they tend to keep their spares / technical information to themselves, but offer excellent service.

Is it within the guarantee period?

    Thanks for the comments.

Let me tell you what I found, I stopped the machine during the wash cycle to check the water level and noticed that one of the 4in1 tablets was not completely disolved. I also noticed that there was still residue of foam in the machine when the rinse cycle had stopped.

I discussed these issues with my daughter (its her machine) and thought it could be because we had run the machine with a tablet in place but no dirty dishes for it to wash.

She assured me that she had always used the same tablets for the last 12 months or so with no problems. She uses no salt, we are in a soft water area.

I’ll do a further live test using just powder or even a dummy run with no powder to see if that solves the problem.

    Thanks

Using the modern detergents (tablets or powder) will indeed cause foaming, though this is counteracted by the food soils when a load of dirty dishes is washed.

Even rinsing dishes in the sink can cause foaming in the machine, due to lack of food residues. Most tablets are designed for a full dishwasher, with normal-to-heavy soiling.

Incidentally, a brand new dinner service has to be washed before use: wash it by hand, the first time. This is because the dust and grime will not be successfully removed by a dishwasher (designed for food removal); and furthermore tablets have a propensity to foam, resulting in a poor wash. (This applies to new cutlery too). I know, because I’ve done it!

Try running the dishwasher on the “Rinse & Hold” cycle (might be called “Prerinse” on the Hotpoint) several times, this will rinse the foam out and give an indication of whether it still leaks when circulating water alone.

Re: Powder forming one big lump in detergent compartment

The poor wash action could be a build up of greasy residues. You could purchase a dishwasher-cleaning solution, and following the product’s instructions to the letter (has to be used on a 60 degrees C or above), use it to degrease/cleanse the empty machine.

I’m really not convinced that all these low-temperature washes are the best for the machines… you really need an occasional high temperature, intensive wash to blast the greasy deposits away.

    I wasn’t saying that.

Hoover washing machines sold in 1990, used the same basic design as the machines sold in 1980, or even before. It’s perfectly true that the control panels changed, water consumption was reduced, etc., but the machines used the same style of parts.

Then the production process was changed, and we had in quick succession:

“New Wave / Classica / Softwave” ranges

“Quattro / Performa / Excel” ranges

“Nextra / Megaload” ranges, and the strange “Vision” – a throwback to the styling of the original Keymatic.

And I presume the number of spare parts required to be held in stock, more than doubled…

The deposits may be grease-balls, possibly caused by insufficient detergent or a dirty machine.

Try running the machine empty, but put it on a a boil programme, with a powder detergent that has oxygen bleach (ARIEL in the green or blue boxes, DAZ, or PERSIL in the green or blue packets). This will clean away any grease residues. Clean the powder drawer beforehand.

The only extra slim machine I have ever come across was the Creda spacesaver which fitted in under the draining board side of the sink, unfortunately this was discontinued ions ago .

The choices you now have as far as I am aware would be as you say the 45cm size or a worktop model suh as the Bosch SKT5102GB. Only other thing you could do would be to take out a base unit if you have the space and fit a 60cm model which would be more economical.

Re: Pressure chamber AEG favorit 875i

My sentiments exactly, and your machine will probably have better quality steel (thicker!) than most of todays machines. I would imagine that your machine is a true AEG; from what I have seen in the shops, current AEG’s look positively Zanussi-ish ๐Ÿ™

It is a pity that spare parts become obsolete so quickly. If the manufacturers would settle upon a robust design, and continue to implement the occasional minor improvement. Instead, they launch new ranges every few years, making the same mistakes both they, and their competitors have made in the past. Metal parts become plastic, and a 15-year lifespan is never seen again.

Check that any “HALF LOAD” button is not selected. I believe that Bosch machines have a half load function, which diverts water to the top basket only.

I like the idea of using an old duster. What I noticed on my door was that the dust or fluff had actually “baked” on. I had to scrape it off with a paint scraper. Sounds gross – it was!

More routine maintenance would probably clear it before it had a chance to harden.

On another subject: I found some blown up parts diagrams for this dryer. One part was listed as a โ€œDrum Mill.โ€ Looks like something that the drum rubs against as it rotates. It isnโ€™t on my dryer. Do you know if that is a problem?

Any other โ€œroutineโ€ consumables I should replace while Iโ€™m at it?

    Cheers, ———– Doc

This, I think, is actually the lifter paddle(s) inside the drum. Sometimes the exploded diagrams depict components out of position, for reasons of clarity. And sometimes they’re not shown at all!

My mum has the Mark 1 model: the plastic shaft which connects the metal timer-shaft to the actual control knob, fractured recently. If so, the knob will have excessive play, and not line up correctly with the minutes.

She bought it in 1996 plus the Comet 5-year guarantee (had to spend ยฃ300 in order to get Sky Analogue free).

Successfully claimed back the Comet policy after the 5-Year period was up (never used it!).

Analogue Sky was a complete shambles! Amstrad boxes were replaced in quick succession- 6 altogether! A BT-branded Sky box was eventually fitted which performed OK.
