ParticipantRe: Bad Integrated Appliance Installation
Had the same job this morning, the dishwasher was screwed into the side before putting a great big worktop on it. Said it was supplied by B&Q and fitted by a “friend” through connections. i told the customer to get this “friend” back and sort it. One is not amused!

The dishwasher had been screwed into both left and right wooden side panels from the middle of the dishwasher. 5 screws through top middle of the left hand panel into the adjacent cupboard and 2 screws through the top middle of the right panel into the wooden side panel. This could have only been done before the sink and work top were fitted. What was the fitter thinking…Just had exactly the same job this morning!

ParticipantRe: Tecnik Oven – Unusually badly warped element
I once used the ohms law to work out what was wrong with the Creda oven years ago as it was not warming up quickly enough. The stats and seals were in perfect working order so I resorted to test the element and worked it out that element was indeed slowly dying, I then replaced the element with a brand new one and lo and behold the oven warmed up fast! That was a very unusual case for me.

Wifi in general have a tendency to drop the connection for no reason. I rarely see a kitchen or utility room have strong wifi connection. Maybe I ought to offer wifi booster on my job?

It’s a right PITA to do any sort of cross reference of part numbers,Iv’e also let my feelings known to our rep(not as that will change anything).

I like cross referencing parts esp if I have it in the van to see if I can use it. Masterparts used to be so good at it and that was stopped. Connect still do some cross referencing. Qualtex are very good at it.
I get frustrated that I can’t seem to cross ref Hoover parts on Connect as it is nearly always genuine when other suppliers uses pattern parts.
Oven elements are the worse. Some simply point you to a £60 grill element knowing that they have pattern part for £20 and that is just Bosch via Connects. Thankfully for having the Element man on my doorstep who helped me out thousands times over.

ParticipantRe: A Cautionary Tale
I’m glad the matter was resolved but I find it rather odd that this particular machine got a base without anti-flood device. These are expensive machines, surely could they not fit one? If it has the anti-flood switch, perhaps it would have lessen the damage to the flooring?
I’m no expert on ISE but I think it’s a design fault that ISE overlooked the need of having an anti-flood switch. Even with the customer’s misuse, the damage would have been kept to minimum.
Still it is worth being cautious.

ParticipantRe: Retirement
I once was given a cheque by an elderly man to pay for my services. Later on he phoned to say that he used the wrong cheque book as it has his late wife’s name on it who passed away a year ago thus the cheque is invalid. He asked that I am to return the invalid cheque back and I will be issued a new one with his name on it without his late wife’s.
It was rather awkward moment if you ask me!
Make sure that you have the right names on the cheque especially if the other is still with us or not!

ParticipantRe: How can I remove dye residue from washing machine?
My wife is forever using Dylon dye for her clothes. She used all different colours! The worse one is the green colour.
You do need to get an old cloth and wipe out the gunk and remaining dye from the door seal, door glass even the top of the door seal where there is a shower head (some machines have those). Also I clean out the drain pump filter as well.
As Martin says use bleach based detergent and do 60deg wash without the clothes in it. This usually solves the problem.

ParticipantRe: Retirement
As a guy doing this trade for 5 years, it is not helpful seeing comments from people moaning and looking back at the old days with rose tinted glasses.
I hope to continue this job till my retirement which I have 25 years left to go. I’m a repair and salesman at the moment this method seems to be working.
I see my work as an occupation which keeps me occupied and it makes me happy.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint grill – C367EKH
The current knob has the markings of 1 to 6 and the owner assumed that to get full power is to turn to six which it was not the case. He discovered that number 4 gives full power instead of 6.
For an elderly person using the appliance, he found it very confusing and asked for explanation. So I ordered a replacement knob with the markings of 1 to 4 to put an end to the confusion.
Most people would assume that 6 is full power but not on this particular cooker. Turn to 4 and it clicks into place for full power but number six does not click into place as it was balancing between 4 and off position thus giving low power.
I found it was confusing even though I understood what’s happening but the evidence in front of you contradicts it against the owners manual and mechanism of the cooker. It was the wrong knob fitted to the cooker at the factory started it all off!

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint grill – C367EKH
Turned out that according to the instruction manual that the grill should have the setting of 1 – 4 not 1 – 6 which led me thinking that the knob may have been fitted in error by some dopey factory fitter.
I ordered a replacement grill knob with setting of 1-4. So much for wasting my time and confusing the old man who’s wife passed away recently. I had wondered how his wife managed it, anyway it turned out that they both hardly used it until recently when the old man wanted to grill his fish fingers.

ParticipantRe: Indesit bought
That’s an interesting one to watch! TBH, I don’t mind WP appliances especially built in dishwashers as they are fairly reliable and easy to repair. It’s the washing machines that lets them down.
It would certainly be even more interesting on what will happen to the parts especially pattern parts that are commonly found among Indesit appliances but Whirlpool and pattern parts seems few and far between.
Maybe the Americans wanted to invest in High Efficiency machines with more choices (aka front loader) for themselves bypassing the Chinese as we have strong market for those kind of machines? Perhaps it is a good thing that is going into private ownership reducing the chance to be taken over by the Chinese?

A very long time ago, I think I may have attempted to fix this asylum seeker Entrean’s family (one of those African nation) washing machine or oven. The host have this coffee ritual involving pop corn, roasting coffee on the camping gaz stove sending smoky roasted coffee smell around the house, then it was transferred into liquid that is similar size to a glass of whiskey. Like Ken said the caffeine high lasted for days. The coffee was the size of expresso that makes the Itailian’s expresso at Costa Coffee seem weak, sweetened with sugar and gulp it down. It was a long time ago but the taste seem vaguely familiar. But they insists you to have another one, in those culture it is considered as impolite to refuse.

Participantreplacing a zanussi door gasket time 🙂
Just a thought… Why not have a competition at the WTA conference in March? Surely we can get hold of old washers including the troublesome Zanussi and bring it along. Maybe Qualtex can supply the new door seals for free?
The timed competition can take place during the breaks and the winner will be announced at the last session could win a prize?
Just a thought… Would anyone be up for it? Best get some practice then…
