ParticipantRe: Those useless plastic coating dishwasher tablets….
Ive come across this half dozen times even seen them block the drain pump, hopefully they will continue to become more popular, got to keep busy
!
– My thoughts exactly!! I like this kind of work cos it’s easy and does not involve opening the tool box – pity about the offer of a cup of tea

ParticipantRe: Those useless plastic coating dishwasher tablets….
I am referring mainly to Dishwashers on eco setting of temperature of 35 deg or thereabouts commonly found on Bosch/Neff/Siemens using powerball tablets.
WRT washing machines using similar sort of plastic pouches on the eco setting and/or quick washes (low temperature below 30 deg) , I am trying to see if there are other engineers who have issues with plastic pouches for washing machines and plastic coated tablets for dishwasher.
How would they advise the customers?
Would my advice be ok if I say “swtich brand and use proper tablets (where you remove the plastic wrap) or powder and forget liquid or plastic pouches/tablet and refrain from using eco settings” (This is for Dishwasher BTW) Would most engineers agree with me or not?

Perhaps it could have been using too many eco washes without service wash causing the problem rather than the tablets?

ParticipantRe: Domestic Appliance Testing
Can anyone advise me where to get a decent affordable insulation tester?
I already own a Martindale IN2003 insulation tester. The insulation testing part seems to do what is expected though I am left feeling confused at the readings of being over range. The earth continuity testing part doesn’t seem to work well and I am left wondering if the tester is faulty or am I using it incorrectly. The batteries are fine and in good strength.
I am using a simple multimeter for earth testing in the meantime not for insulation testing.
I consulted with Martindale company who assured me that all is well and it is acceptable for PAT testing although they (Martindale) were not familiar with white goods testing. I know from experience that Megger BM221 would provide the results I like but can’t afford their prices. That’s why I opted for Martindale which could may as well be a dumb thing to do. Martindale suggested I get a PAT testing machine which is several times more expensive than what I am using.
Surely there must be a better way to carry out PAT testing, insulation testing, and earth continuity testing without having to spend several hundreds pounds on few equipments?
My tester gives a limited range for insulation testing, the maximum is 100 mohms, I know that is very good as it passed the minimum requirement of 2 mohm but I would like an exact reading rather than get a display of “over range” purely to write summat on a paper to prove that it passed with a reading of such n such instead of over 100 mohm. Is it possible for appliance to have insulation readings higher than 100 mohm?
I am considering to get the tester to checked out by Martindale and have it calibrated. This would means I would have to be slightly out of action as I cannot perform safety checks.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint DC28 Slimline dishwasher – led light flashing
Thanks,
Without trying to appear to be blind…I did try to put it toward the error codes thread but I found a lot of it fits under Trade Technical.
I had some information about the 100 bit, I understand the light is flashing on number two which indicates inlet valve problem.
This is what I find it puzzling as it is filling up with water and it is draining ok. It is the wash that is not working.
Am I right assuming that the error code means inlet valve is not just the actual water inlet valve as it could be another interpretation of wash motor not working? Another hidden meaning I guess?

ParticipantRe: Waste Carriers Licence
Man! This is so confusing!!!!!
Firstly thank you George for taking up the case and producing the results.
Without appearing being simple and thick…did I get this right…
A small home based business offering repair service, when there are calls for repair then I go out to do the job, during quiet times such as the lovely hot weather like over the last fortnight I would have liked to refurbish appliances for resale (I have a sizable back garden for this kind of work), in order to stay within the law and be a respectable and responsible business
do I need the following….
1) T11 exemption which will cost me £840
2) A Waste carriers licence at the cost of and waste brokers licence which will cost me £154There’s another area which I wonder if this applies to me – to be considered as low risk activities/waste as I would not be producing 1000 tonne a year (that is a lot of washing machines!). I would be doing in my back garden which I own the land and would not be a nuisance to my neighbours. I could not find any charges for this so I am hoping that I can use this loophole. To my thinking I can register for free and would not be getting visits cos it’s low risk unless I am wrong?

If I understood what I needed to do in order to stay proper then there are no incentives to continue aka back to square one unless the charges changes.

ParticipantRe: I hate Connects new return system
I never had any problems with Connect esp with the return system. Their prices can be very high compared with Masterpart.
The return system to Masterpart seems to work out more costly as I have to post it back via courier, I have to stay at home to wait for the driver to collect the parcel (meaning I have to reschedule my repair jobs), I could lose a day’s wage then the parcel arrives at masterpart and be charged restocking fee. Hardly worth the trouble.
I found that if you have a quick phone call to your sales rep and mention that Masterpart sells such n such at this price inc postage, you will find that they will match it and not only you can collect it within an hour if you are in the area!
Mind you Masterpart will do the same to price match Connect. I remember quoting a price for wash motor for Candy dishwasher from Connect who gave me a price which I thought it was pricey then I phoned Masterpart who is even pricer, I challenged them, Masterpart agreed to price match along with free delivery.

ParticipantRe: Waste Carriers Licence
My goodness me!
Just when I thought I have this great business plan to have the nice little refurbishment on the side in case of the repair work dried up not only to find that I need a waste carrier’s licence and a pointless T11. I am so grateful for Uk Whitegoods forums.
It’s daft that I would have to fork out £994 every three years for the two licences, I’m sure many of us would think the same.
As domestic appliance engineer, I thought I could keep my skills intact and up to date by refurbishing machines so that I learn summat new, in fact the more I do it, the better I understand machines and its annoying problems, the easier for me to repair when I am out on the job. There must be a few us thinking the same thing.
There is a danger of valuable skills being lost by lack of practice and not being able to keep up to date with the new appliances. My understanding that as an engineer, we have a responsibility to ensure our knowledge and skills are up to date and the only way to do this is getting our hands dirty.
I feel rather peeved by it! javascript:emoticon(‘:angry4:’)

ParticipantRe: INDESIT DISHWASHER
Cheers mate,
I guess my aunt will have to ply me with lots of cakes before I tell her the news.
Is it common to have faulty pcb units on these particular model or is it just across the range of Indesit?

ParticipantRe: INDESIT DISHWASHER
I too, have the same problem, it is the same model and integrated as well!
it went through the whole wash cycle and no heat.
First I thought it was the heater was faulty, heater is in good nick, even replaced the heater and no change. Checked the thermostat, appears to be working against a electric kettle and it is showing changes in resistance.
Then I thought it was the float switch and ruled it out as I would know if the float switch is faulty (flooding).
My hunch was the circuit board – what did you find? My mind keep going back to the float switch but logically it can’t have been that. Float switch only costs around £7, I could try it but it would be a waste of my time.
Currently a new circuit board costs around £85, I need to clarify before I go down the route of replacing the board.
Please help!! A very patience aunt is waiting for me to fix her machine. it has been 3 months now. I only charge her for parts and free labour not forgetting the odd brew and cakes!

ParticipantRe: Tried to advertise with a local directory
Thanks guys!
All your comments certainly got me thinking.
I have asked the offending advertising directory to do the decent thing to give me the advert in JPEG format.
Hopefully I will be able to use the jpeg format to advertise elsewhere. I must admit that advertising my service is harder than my previous business as a organic fruit and veg box scheme.
I had a steady number of customers with a regular income but the credit crunch and organic produce was not seen as essential. I know from personal experience that leaflet drops, newspaper ad, mags, word of mouth are all bl@@dy hardwork. I have few tricks under my sleeves, so roll on Monday!! War paints and all the malarky…
What my father used to say – no pain no gain! 😀

ParticipantRe: Tried to advertise with a local directory
I got an email apologising for their poor communication and confirmed that they are returning my deposit. They wanted to explore the possibility of putting my advert under a different title.
This is rather tricky as I said on previous post that all related categories have been snapped up by this competitor, the one and only trader.
I thought of a new title – White goods repair?
I may not want to proceed and try other avenue. Tomorrow may be a better day and bring in good fortunes….

The model number is WFG2820GB, do you want the serial number?

it’s a WFG2820GB model, it has Precision written across the soap drawer.
