You get it right in the end.

    Don

There you go… The clue on customers profiling – rented machines and renter disappearing = dishonest customers with very little cash or lack the skills to get a job to earn money to buy a machine and be serious about repairs.

To be blunt, it’s either you are being soft or simply you are operating in an area that are deprived littered with work shy residents, social housing residents with limited means of income.

You said its a learning curve but are you learning and make changes? You need to look at your competition, ask customers why they chose you over Joe bloggs domestics, be firm with your fees. Target different areas, give yourself a makeover.

Sometimes its hard to keep up with the changes especially with free estimates, sub standard appliances, customers fishing for tips – you have allowed your customers to take advantage of you and your business at your expense. Put your foot down, be upfront with your fees and you will be able to sort out the good and bad customers. Be firm and fair.

Its purely about load balancing, if you can manipulate certain things like fridges, aircon and certain heating systems to avoid certain times it could reduce potential blackouts and problems.

It’s all very well to manipulate certain things but surely the power companies should produce more power or at least give us free solar panels as most people draw power during daytime. I think the technology to fit on to appliances is a cop out that the power companies are failing to do something about it.

With all the drive to reduce power consumption, is there a need for such devices whereas local councils are replacing their street lights for ultra modern LEDs, modern appliances are fast approaching to be A+ grade, companies are replacing their fluorescence lights for LEDs. Actually the UK power consumption has gone down due to the fact that electricity is expensive and people are thinking twice before turning tumble dryer on on a warm windy sunny day!

Would this lead to unusual faults in the future? I used to have a Citroen Picasso few years ago, it developed a rather unusual fault but it was common failures, basically it loses engine power for no apparent reasons.

After several garage visits and no one found the fault. I did some digging after three hours on the net, found it was faulty brake light switch that sits on top of the brake pedal. When it wears out, it created a play thus triggering the brake lights on whilst driving, being a computer controlled car, the ecu thought the brakes were coming on therefore stopped the fuel supply to the engine hence loss of power.

I reckon this power device would cause unusual faults.

Just attended to same make and model today with lack of spin. It took a while to distribute but did get up to speed.

How can pressure chamber be the culprit? Is it liquid detergent causing this?

Sometimes you don’t need the hassle for customers fishing for hints and tips let alone quibbling over free estimates and call out fee.

I’ve always been upfront with my fees. If they argue, Walk away.

I had a complaint from a disabled customer who was fleeced by my rivals. Basically charged her £45 call out fee to check Bosch washer dryer and says need new drain pump. But what he failed to mentioned that he is charging an extra £79 for labour plus £80 for new pump when he came back to fit it. I was speechless that someone would do such thing like that. I checked out his website, no mention of labour charge just call out plus parts. This customer was really irate that she was charged in total £204. This should have costed her no more than £80 if I did the job. Sadly she did not know about me until her friend recommended me when her oven element blew out. I encouraged her to complain to the rival and point out the excessive charges.

You need to be fair with the charges and yes you will get someone saying so n so domestic appliance repair do free estimates. I say feel free to call him and let me know if he can fit you in today or tomorrow otherwise I can fit you in this afternoon or tomorrow first thing but my charges still stands. People wants you to come out yesterday after phoning you this morning rather wait for a whole week. People with free estimate are often busy based on my observation.

Thanks, 124M ohms was not the readings I am used to seeing with Hotpoint washers especially the WF range. I prefer it to be much higher and in fact the brushes were running out (1cm left) and the motor was filthy. The numbers were dropping which gave me cause for concern. After I cleaned it up and replaced the brushes, the readings went over 2000M ohms and stabilised. I just need to rule it out before suspecting the boards.

The original problem was that it was not turning and draining, when I arrived I thought it was the brushes but when I came to switch it on to get it pumped the water out but it showed up F11 fault. The pump was jammed thus burnt the motor out hence the open circuit readings.

I will have a look on the lower board.

There are no burnt tracks on the upper board in the facia – clean as a whistle.

Re: List of washers with sealed/welded tubs

LG washing machines can be viewed similar to welded tub even though it’s not. Why is that? Simple… Direct drive motor eliminates the noise and even with the bearings on its way out, the customer don’t seem to noticed it until it rattles like a banging drum.

At this point it’s too late to rescue the machine as the bearings ground out the shaft because of the weight of the motor. The new bearings will not fit as the shaft is too big caused by the grounding. In theory LG can be added to the list? Don’t know about Samsung but I guess with same technology of direct drive motor its bound to have same problems.

    Hi James,

The dual control part number you gave was not recognised. Did you mean this… HPTC00225573?

Average person replace their appliances every 12 years? Where did that figure come from?

I rarely see appliances of over 6 years old. Most I get to see are usually 3 to 5 years old. Most appliances die by 6 years. The only appliance that will last forever is fridge/freezer. I replaced mine a month ago as my wife thinks it was getting a bit shabby after ten years of use.

I raised my profile by visiting the local fire station where they offered a charity car wash. My dirty salt laden van was promptly hosed down literally and lathered up by a bunch female firefighters and well behaved youths from young firefighters association.

My young 6 years old son screamed with excitement. But it ain’t gonna earn me £100k a year it was a lot fun. I think there are more fun being low paid than being rich.

Cheers. I love sink macerators but not had the pleasure to repair one. I think every household should have them.
