    Re: labour charges

We have had this topic before and its always going to be relevant……

You must work out your operating costs to get to a customers door to be able to work out what your labour cost should be.
Forget a mark up on parts/spares, you should treat this subject as a bonus to you and not rely on any profit from this medium.

If you are paying rent and rates and have staff to pay then you will fall into the bracket of £22.00 to £30.00 per call to operate, there is a ready reckoner in the downloads to help you work it out.

Wether you choose to charge by the hour or fixed labour costs is your choice…..but however you do it you have to make a profit to survive and invest into your own business to move onwards.

You will also have to test and find your own place in your own market place……I do not want to be cheap and I do want to be well rewarded for the skill sets that I have, upmarket appliances carry a fixed labour rate of £80.00 plus Vat and you have to find the customers who are willing to pay this……… my minimum is £50.00 plus Vat.

Not suprisingly I do very little on Hotpoint, Hoover, Servis etc as far as private work is concerned (with the exception of refrigeration) but see plenty of the German stuff to make it rewarding.

Re: Glue for oven door? (Indesit…)

I have exactly the same problem as the original post and have just bought a replacement oven door assembly. However, it’s not apparent (to me) how to replace the thing.
Don’t suppose you could point me in the direction of some instructions could you?

That makes sense and probably means we’ve wasted our money on the spare part.

I’ll be popping downstairs to fix it in a minute.

Many thanks Dave, I owe you a pint

    Re: SMEG Repairs

I read the replies to this laughing. I had a Smeg A42 and the rapid burner never stayed lit. It took nearly 2 years of complaining to Smeg before they finally sorted it out by replacing the thermocouple a different type which appeared to be longer and actually sat in the flame rather than near it..

One of the engineers came round, first of all said there wasnt a problem and then said he had fixed the problem unfortunately my wife couldn’t test it at the time but about an hour later the problem was back and we were never convinced they did anything. At the time we lived in Walberton so perhaps it was the same lot that came to Chichester (about 7 miles away).

The service centre for smeg was useless, I once spent best part of an hour on hold trying to get through to some useless bint who wasnt prepared to do anything. Eventually they extended the guarantee to 2 years but during this period when I complained to the MD all he said was that as my guarantee had run out they couldn’t do anything so much for the extension.

Now I would not only never recommend Smeg I would advise people against buying Smeg goods.

Maxx’s and Exxcel’s are excellent. 1200 spin is perfectly adequate, bearing in mind the adage that the faster it spins, the more it shakes, the more it shakes, the faster it falls to bits!

Going from memory, an 800 spin machine extracts 58{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of water retained in a mixed cotton load, 1000 does 62{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} and 1400 does 64{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. You don’t get anything extra with the high spin except extra stress on the appliance.

Sorry to be so blunt, but the C word just sets me off………

This is a personal opinion and entirely reflects the experience, personal bias and general degree of damage done to me by all machines over the last 17 years.

    Regards,
    Penguin.

The extra pound or two does make the difference at the moment as I’m currently job-hunting, so while I’d ideally have a Miele (like the missus’s parents have) or a Bosch I’ve plumped for a cheapo Hoover from Allders, think the 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} off today pushed me over the edge.

Even if it only lasts a year it is cheaper than the laundrette (cost £20 odd quid washing a few things yesterday) and when it breaks down I can go for something better then.

    Re: hob ignition

First thing to do is to switch the electric supply to your hob OFF.

It appears that your wife has used excess water when cleaning it and has soaked the electronic spark generator assembly.

Leave the hob switched off for about 7 days then turn back on and you should find it has dried out,if not then you have the option to have the ignition ass replaced or buy a handheld ignitor which is the cheaper option.

I have to advise that under no circumstances should you try to access and repair yourself.

Once again thankyou for you suggestions. The wall socket and plug is making good contact and the plug does not get hot. The door interlock switch suggestion sounds interesting. I have an insulation tester on order and I will let you know of further developments in a few days.

    Re: Most ridiculous part price

This request from GUEST (12 May) is possibly posted in the wrong area but I shall try and help just the same.

The model numbers from B&Q do not always correspond with the manufacturers model. It is possible this is an Arrow appliance made by TEBA. The correct model number will be on the rating label that is stuck to the outer cabinet (More that likely on the top). Look for a model that has a letter for the first digit, five numbers, two letters and followed by two more numbers – e.g. A02004GB01.

The doors for ovens do not come complete so we need to know what part of the door is required.

    I hope this helps.

    Re: mosfets for f&p washer…

excellent post stan and welcome to ukw.

Hope you can spread the word down there as we are all stronger for sharing tech info and friendships through this sort of medium.

For instance tech support on fp product here is now poor since the tie up between whp and fp, so for independents to repair it is all uphill. Shame really as the dishdraw is a brill bit of kit.
