ParticipantRe: Darnit – my Smeg hob is broken again!…
My only advice would be to get a gas safety engineer to look at it

ParticipantRe: Masterpart….or Amazon?
I think we are trying to cure something that can’t be done, just need to let it run it natural life and see where it ends up

Just spoken to an electrician mate of mine and he’s insistent that if a new cooker is installed then you are responsible for everything back to the consumer unit, however just repairing it means you are not making changes to the installation. I’ve got one now where the terminal block has burnt out on the cooker so will have to pass it over as it needs a cable as well

ParticipantRe: True or false?
I’ve been told that’s the case when installing a cooker but not when repairing one.

Unfortunately it’s the world we live in and I tend to agree with Ken. Not just our industry, take the noble self employed mechanic can open the bonnet but not a lot else, I had a oil light come up on my 18 month old van saying oil quality had dropped, got my mate to sort the oil and service it but had to go into a Citroen garage just to reset it. This would’ve cost me over £100 but luckily he knew someone there that just plugged it in and away we go, sounds familiar doesn’t it.
Oh and he isn’t a backstreet mechanic but a supervisor at VauxhallAndy jones

Maybe there is money in allowing DIYers to get advice from experts on a forum.
I’m curious as to why you come on here, is it just to wind people up? If so fine whatever floats your boatAndy jones

Think we all know lee has been there done it and has got the tee shirt…. Scrap that he probably hand stitched his own top then personally embroidered his logo on the back which probably says “I AM ” in massive letters.
Be nice to hear where we are all going wrong and how to get to his level, probably a trade secret me thinks
Rant over……….. Sort of !!!Andy jones

Expertise isn’t just fitting parts but knowing how to repair it safely and leave it in good state of repair. How many customer have an insulation tester to make sure it’s electrically sound after they have done it.
Don’t disagree. But to be an “Expert” needs to be proven as opposed to spoken word.
So long as my customers know I’m an expert then that’s fine. Certainly don’t need to prove it on hereAndy jones

Look anyone could drive a taxi. Try telling that to London cabbies that have done the knowledge. I can put a shelf up, don’t make me a chippie, I can also replace a tap but it don’t make me a plumber.
