Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

It’s when you turn your back for a second and they stick their hand in the machine that’s running and say, “Oh, is that a big lump of concrete?”. Even with the best risk assessment regime the problem is still there. Apart from putting up an Electricity Board – style striped tent over the machine and cordon off the kitchen with a police line tape every time you do a job, it’s almost impossible to stop idiots doing this.
I got some abuse once for grabbing a lady’s hand and pulling it out of the working machine. I had already got her to move her kids and dog from the kitchen, but “Death Wish Doris” still decides to put her hand in the machine. I replied that if that was the sort of language I should expect for saving her life, then I’ll take it as a compliment. 😉
Immediate apologies and lots of remorse now of course – she turns out to be one of my best customers for generating business for me.

    Re: Daft Road Names

There is a small group of houses on a small road in Bere Regis in Dorset collectively called Sh1tterton.
We used to go on holiday to Pitlochry in Scotland when I was a kid to see my Nan. When we were out with her in the car (can’t quite remember where it was exactly) but she would always make a point of saying, “Look, we’re now passing Granny’s Wynd.” 😆

Ken, on the subject of insurance, AXA are advertising on the radio an ‘all – in – one’ policy for people like us. Van insurance, van contents / tool insurance and public liability all in one package.
Could you speak to your contact in AXA about this. Can he do anything for the WTA members?
It sounded like a good deal. 😉

    Only one thing…….
I don’t charge VAT (yet), but I don’t utilise “VAT free repairs” as an advertising ‘slogan’. Could this be misinterpreted and put people like me in the same box as the “free call out” brigade?
Even so, there must be scores of reputable traders in my position. Charging VAT shouldn’t be seen as the sign of reputation.

    Maybe I’m too sensitive…. 😕

Spot on Chris, self regulate or be dictated to by brainless bureaucrats.
We can demonstrate that the COP is already a proven framework and people only sign up because they see the need for a level of regulation in the industry. This was proven before the WTA was formed. Now with the TA making this venture roll forward, it is exciting to see something new suggested every day within these forums and the response is vibrant.

Right, where do we start? Adrian……….:D

I second that – Adrian is the man for the job. He’d better withdraw his bear prodding stick from E’bay – he’s gonna need it!!!! 😉
If I can help, I will.

    Re: Members list

In a lesser way, I would be slightly wary of complete transparency as my original e-mail address on my website was spammed a few months back. The spammer sent e-mails supposedly written by me, selling ‘stuff’ ( 😯 ) you know what I mean – to all and sundry. I had some ‘interesting’ replies. 😉
I had to abandon my own web address and set up a new account. Therefore anyone who legitimately sent me an e-mail to that address enquiring about my services would be binned immediately. I was furious and promptly removed my web address from my site.
So I would not reveal my e-mail address on the WTA. Yes to phone number and company details being shown and area covered, what else is necessary?
People are buying your services not your soul. I don’t trust e-mail – too many twits (with an ‘A’) bent on destruction for my liking. Only e-mail from trusted people are allowed now. I would rather phone someone than e-mail any day.
Call me old fashioned if you will – but that’s my point of view.

    Re: bosch dishwashersgs45eo8gb/45

The ‘auto’ cycle calculates the wash and rinse times using the turbidity sensor – this device in effect ‘looks’ through the water and calculates the length of the cycle depending on the opacity of the wash water. 199 minutes is the maximum time on the PCB, so it is in effect saying, “Yuk…. full of cr*p…..
The hose between the water metering tank and sump hose is the first place to look. If that is clear, the system (heater box with turbidity sensor on top) is blocked or sludged up. Holes in filters, incorrect fitting filters and lazy customers are the culprits here.
Clean all the filters, metering hose, sump and inside the dishwasher. Then run it empty through a intensive cycle with dishwasher detergent to break up the crud. If it won’t do the intensive cycle straight away, use the auto several times until it cleans itself up. The time on the display should drop down quite quickly as it progresses.
    That method worked for me.

    Re: WTA Engineer Register

Unfortunately I couldn’t join in until now as workshop work and ordering sorta got in the way…….
We need to encourage membership and provide as many avenues of opportunity as we can. I can see Adrian’s point that ‘you have to give to receive’; and I think that maybe in the future there is room for restrictions – but not yet.
The joining fee is low – and to be fair, all we can offer in real terms at the moment is proposals: that will suffice for most people, but they are watching from the sidelines to see how things progress. In effect, the WTA is a shop with whitewashed windows and a sign saying, “Under New Management”. Expectation is high, and the reality inside has to mirror what is proposed. To exclude people this early on may put prospective members off.
Cowboys inevitably will always be a concern, but they usually ‘out’ themselves given time. If they are in the TA, we can help to ‘regulate’ them (probably not the word, but ya know what I mean) and visibly remove them from the TA. That is the proactive way to discriminate.
