ParticipantRe: new element not working ?
Gavin , I`d be slightly careful here because as Chris has explained an element blowing can damage the thermostat but 9 times out of 10 it would leave the thermostat shorted (ie permanently on and not switching off).
Certainly not healthy if stat is not clicking but you may have other damaged parts (as a result of the element failure)as you have no heat.If the thermostat indicator light is coming on then I would suggest damage elsewhere.

Haven`t done one in ages Jim , but it`s normally the adaptor knob that breaks , part no. 481231018418 or various other numbers.

Yes Tony that`s all pretty much as most of us here would do on a daily basis I would imagine. The point I`m trying to make is if you had someone call with a Hotpoint WM totally dead , you don`t tell them to go and check the door interlock. No , you book the call , do a good job at a fair price , get paid for doing a good job and get recommended to all their friends , neighbours and relatives.
The type of people who are always looking for free advice have friends and family who are also looking for free advice and quite frankly I don`t need them because they don`t pay my wages. Now some of you obviously see this as short sighted but over the years that`s the way I see things and the advice given out in the public forums should be as if you were taking a call from one of your own customers IMO.

Yes Ken , I fully appreciate and understand your views on this subject but the fundamental question of whether the trade members think too much information is being given out , still remains.
Maybe having read your post a few have been swayed that the info. is about right but I still feel we give away too much on occasion but as you say it`s not directly affecting anyones individual business one way or another really.Interesting topic once again.

The rule of thumb is that if you wouldn’t tell the customer what you do over the phone then don’t tell them.
That`s why I rarely answer any public forum questions but don`t get me wrong in general the guys who do the answering do so in a professional and excellent manner but the question is being asked if we`re giving away too much info. and on occasion I think we are.
To say if you don`t like it , don`t read it is certainly no solution to a healthy debate and I think this subject merits discussion every few months 💡 .

There you go then aqua , give that one a try 😀 . ELE6254 or perhaps you already have ❓
BTW is that identical to ELE4080 apart from the two , as opposed to one , studs which are easily removable ❓

What do we think the impact on the site would be if we all agreed to give away the absolute minimum of information and constantly just recommend repairs@.
Maybe the hits would drop off a bit but would this have any financial or other consequences ❓ .

Martin wrote:I am somewhat surprised and bemused at the response of the poll I set within that thread. Out of a paltry 40 votes (of those that bothered 🙄 ) there is still almost a 50/50 split over the main issue?
Martin , I think the value of the above poll is diluted by the fact there are too many options.
Might be worth having another poll along the lines of either we are giving the public too much info or it`s just about right.
My opinion is if we are giving away anything it should be aimed at making a sale and I know it must be very difficult knowing where to draw the line.
Mind you if anyone phones me with their washing machine not draining , I sure don`t tell them to check the filter as I see it as their ignorance and I need the money.

Chris.Which element are you using Chris ❓
I use ELE4080 , (14-NF-13 from SEME@£5:85)on Neff ovens where I can and don`t have any real problem with them.I do get the odd one failing in guarantee but nothing too severe.
I always give the area behind the back plate a good wipe down to get rid of the powdery residue and rub down any metal work damaged by the flare up.Bryan

So I asks the guy where he got the info for the kit, UK Whitegoods was his reply. Can anyone find this thread and point us to it ❓
Mal , I often say to customers who I help on the phone (cooker timers in auto etc.) “thats a tenner you`re owe me” just for a bit of a laugh. I can reveal I`ve had about 3 tenners in 14 years 😆
