    Re: hotpoint armatures

Might be interesting to do a quick poll on those who release the brushes before fitting and compare it with the failure rates experienced?

    Re: hotpoint armatures

Martin..the difference apparently is as much to do with the commutator as the brush…by using a harder laminated brush which has a wafer of lubricant down the middle a harder copper alloy can be used for the comm which in theory leads to longer brush/armature life.
I say in theory because i’ve had one or several over the last year or so that have failed…i just wonder if its the crimp on the tag in the brush thats not made well enough….when i replace a set i release the brush from the grip before installing in the motor then guide the brush in with a finger. I have had three or four sets recently that when i release the grip the brush flies clean out of the holder altogether…spectacular but not very impressive! This brings back memories of the first Hoover matchbox series where the brushes had no tag at all, just relying on the surface contact of the holder to make contact…had loads of those where the brush burnt within the holder because of poor contact.

Thanks Dave…in fact the base was dust dry so futher investigation required.

sounds very much like a blocked pressure system (the bit that detects the water level)…it will probably just require cleaning out but not a job for the fainthearted. Time for an engineer?
Just an afterthought…do you mean it takes 5 minutes to take the water on board????

Re: Neff K1514 (K1514X0GB) Power Fault

Unlikely to be a component failure…there are no internal trips or fuses. I would suggest an electrician is required to comfirm the supply is good all the way to the mains terminal block on the appliance 😉

…just a thought…is it a brand new home with modern insulation and air sealing?…the amount of water used to build a house is truely frightening and it takes weeks and weeks to dry out completely…after all if there is a lot of moisture on the fridge back wall then it can only come from the air or the stored items. As long as the drain is working and the pot is evapourating the water faster than its produced then i’d say there’s no problem

has to be my ‘spanner on a stick’….an 8mm socket on the end of a flexible drive with moulded handle! It was made for a national service company i worked for 20 years ago to fit the inner door seal clamp band on their own brand washer!
Very useful for all those awkward spots…zanussi lids in tight installations, neff/bosch d/w elements etc…not to mention the odd door seal 😉

Re: Sparking after replacing brushes – Hoover WDM120

When replacing motor brushes it is nearly always neccessary to ‘dress’ the commutator, and if it shows sign of wear then the brushes too need dressing.
The commutator can be dressed with fine emery cloth or paper when the motor is out of the machine…simply press it lightly onto the commutator with one finger whilst rotating the armature in one direction only. When all the black pitting has been removed then give it a good brush out with something like an old toothbrush.
If the commutator has a groove worn into it by the brushes (can be felt by a finger nail ‘catching’ the edge of the groove, then the brushes can be dressed by carefully filing a chamfer on the sides at the tip of each brush…this need only be 1mm wide or so, this allows the brush to ‘sit down’ into the groove.
Finally, after refitting the motor set the machine going onto the fastest spin it will do but with no wash load inside…this will give the speediest bedding in at the lowest electrical load i.e. the least sparking

…and if that doesn’t work then you will need an engineer to clean the salt valve seat on the softener, and if that doesn’t cure it then it will need a new softener unit 🙁

    Re: Opinions/Experience

    Hi
The problem with offering an opinion on any current model is that it simply has no track record to go on. Manufcturers have a tendency to bring out a new model or indeed a new range every 5 minutes, often just a face-lift but frequently making small changes inside too.
As a result one can only go on experience with that particular manufacturer and any similar models that may have been out a year or three.
As far as Zanussi go, they have a pretty good record overall, they are reasonably priced for the quality of product, and the spares are easily obtainable at a reasonable cost which is good news for when it breaks down (which it inevitably will at some time in the future)
A more important question may be to ask whether you could manage to find room for a seperate washer and dryer…far more practical and much cheaper to operate in the long run.

check the rinse-aid setting…look under the lid of the rinse-aid compartment and you will see an adjuster (an arrow pointing to a number)…check this is set on no.3 which is the factory setting. if this has been altered then turn it back to no.3
as previously suggested when you run out of the 3-in-1 tabs go back to the plain tabs
does anyone else in your household do the ‘topping up’?…i have known some people put washing-up liquid into the rinse-aid compartment 😉

could be a number of things…is it heating or running cold?…is it making any noise on the drying cycle?…are the clothes coming out wetter than when they went in?

…that would be the whole of the back panel kpf…you will need to take that little cover off first to remove a clip to allow the drum out of the bearing.
