ParticipantRe: Free call outs
First call on the phone this morning, zanussi washer stopped full of water.Explain my £30 charge for diagnosis, “oh i dont want to pay for somebody to come out i just need it draining so i can get my clothes out ” . Tell her that its not a free call out and i charge for my time ,”oh i will leave it then, we want a new one anyway ” :rolls: .So happy i now charge just to get these wasters off my back 🙂

ParticipantRe: Free call outs
Customer psychology is simple, free estimate = free repair ,customers abuse services and engineers they perceive as free.stopped doing them a few years ago and never looked back 😀

ParticipantRe: Is it just me?
Think its that time of year Tim ,i have had a few this week asking for free estimates and not booking, but in the main i find its probably only one in twenty that doesnt book certainly far lower than i feared when i started charging ,read a book recently regarding how the mind works relating to people who dont charge enough for there services and one line that stuck in my mind was that to a customer free call out =free repair ,and thats where your problems start :rolls: Cras

I converted to a diagnosis fee /call out charge around two years ago after 20 odd years of no call out and its been the best thing i ever did ,like you i was sick of the chancers taking me for a ride .I now charge £30 for a diagnosis but quash this charge if they go ahead with the repair at the price quoted at first i thought i might lose a lot of work but in reality its just sorted the wheat from the chaff and left me with time to concentrate on the quality customer ,takings are up and im a lot time richer nowdays 😀

ParticipantRe: Any Gas appliance engineers in the house?
Last person in syndrome im afraid .Im not a gas engineer but the wife runs an oven cleaning firm and has experienced similar problems, customers on the odd occasions have rung up with faults caused by the cleaning :rolls: days or sometimes months later. On one occasion during the pre check on an old dears gas cooker she noticed the flame in the oven remained on low ,she reported it to the customer and noted it on the invoice which the customer signed, several weeks later she had a call from the old dear claiming the oven had not cooked properley since the clean and it had been working perfectly before 😯 .I have in the past had to change elements on ovens f.o.c for her and had a problem once with a gas tap on a hob seizing solid a week after it had been cleaned which we footed the bill for as a gesture of goodwill .its not just us appliance repairers that get blamed for faults beyond our control 😆

ParticipantRe: collecting your call out
Im ashamed to admit that i never used to charge a call out until i started reading posts on here regarding busy fools ,and realised i was one :rolls: , i changed over to charging for my time over two years ago now and can honestly say things have never been better ,i should have done it years ago ,it certainly weedles out the wasters and i now have more time to concentrate on my better quality customers . 😀 Cras

ParticipantRe: What’s the most stupid things customers say?
Yesterday a man knocks on the workshop door “can you come and look at my washing machine its gone wrong “. “Yes no problem we charge £30 call out”. Man looks aghast, and says “no you dont understand i only want you to tell me what parts i need i then want to fit them myself, but i will buy them off you 😯 “.

ParticipantRe: samsung rs 21 /r600a refrigerant question ?
Thanks Tee,this fr/frz is an early one so i suppose that as it was manuf. on r134a that it would not be subject to a re call and i think it was probably a local refrigeration company that fitted the pot.Do you know the part number for the safety mod on the r600a units as i would like to fit it to this fr/frz as piece of mind Thanks Cras.

ParticipantRe: samsung rs 21 /r600a refrigerant question ?
Thanks for the reply ,i did get the customer to sign to say i had informed her of my concerns etc .I had already fitted def. heater before i noticed the label so at the mo its running as before, full of food :rolls:. However if this repair is considered the norm within the industry then i will leave it at that, to be fair the compressor change looks neat ,tidy and professional (retro fit embraco )Thanks again Cras
