Just for info the bolts used on Zanussi automatics fit the Hotpoint spider and being 10mm headed dont cause further problems.

    Re: Refrigerant Handling

Graham Dixon and I are currently putting together a short training course that will be government recognized and allow domestic appliance engineers to have a national qualification. This will be a module in a larger qualification covering the whole of the industry. Currently, we are ploughing through the C&G stuff taking out that which applies to commercial and industrial and putting in that which is domestic. The course will be either by web based training with a test at the end or a couple of days of training at either a college or training establishment. The latter depends on how many we can get on a course. Part of the course will include both electrical and system work ie refrigerant recovery, regassing etc. Hope that helps – watch this space 😆

Agree with that but as you will concede most of us dont have the time to go through the vast amount of technical info thrown at us. However, with the ISE machine at least you have someone on the end of the phone to call and ask about a problem. Not many manufacturers in my experience have a technical guy available on the end of the line that is anywhere near competent and up to date.

    Re: Teaching Grandma

Whilst I agree with most that is spoken above you also have to factor in the fact that in many cases the manufacturers complain constantly about the amount of spares used per job. However, they do not go anywhere near far enough to ensure that those working on their appliances have trained on the product. Whilst at this time Samsung with their problems in build quality are probably not at good example, they quite clearly state that if you have not attended their training you dont get to work on the appliance. The current young engineer is being blinded by what the laptop tells them not what us oldies were taught years ago. The driving force these days seems to be knocking on the customers door within yea number of hours rather than fixing the appliance on a first visit.

Two points perhaps – firstly the plumber is quite incorrect in stating that this is unskilled work. I doubt he would have found the fault without the help of someone skilled. Secondly, I tend to agree with Bazza, take the money and run – to be honest near to £150 to change a suppressor is alittle high ❓

You need to have an accurate temperature reading – it can be either short of refrigerant, the compressor is failing or the thermostat is duff. My gut feeling is that as its 8 years old it will be one of the first two, but without knowing the temperature its hard to confirm this.
