    K.

Would there be a concensus on the above then, as I really cant see the A.C. having any effect to influence any dubious members otherwise.

O.K. I conceed that it should remain a free talking shop but repairs @ and any one who uses uk whitegoods to advertise their bussiness has a responsibility to other members to abide by a mutually agreed charter.

If they stand to profit from their membership then why should’nt the UKW
community chest expect a nominal contribution in the form of subs.

    Re: Tasks!

I’m a little concerned (as always) with free everything. I know that we are trying to encourage as many people as possible to get involved and fully utillize the site.
But I feel that we should now be thinking of restricting certain services from those that do not wish to be subscribers . There are several reasons for this.

    1) The guy’s that have been with us from the beginning not only subscribe but also spend hours on the site moderating forums.

    2) The information that we give freely on the site. other trades have to pay for by purchasing their individual trade publications.

    3) It is my fervent belief that people in general do not hold any value for things they are given free. (Remember the tale of Alexa’s tyres ! a classic example of what I’m trying to say)

    4) No matter how small we set the contribution we then at the very least, have a degree of committment shown and accepted by everybody. I know that you find askin’ the trade members for money abhorent but at roughly £5 a month thats about the cost of five cigarettes a week.
If an independant trade member cannot afford that miniscule level of committment, then he should look for another carear, as he’s way past our help.

    5) I also belive that we will then be better placed and funded to bring even more services (like those requested by Martin in a recent post) to our committed membership.

I have no problem in free access for a set period of time to see if it suit’s a prospective member but after that it should be either sign the charter and stump up, or go away.

I would be gratefull if all the moderators would comment on this as I’m sure I’m not the only one that feel’s this way.

All the best Mark ! 😉 I’m sure you’ve thought this through.

    Re: Cut Vinyl Graphics

Surely we must look to promote UKW at every oppurtunity. We started off as a self help group to lend one another support and we have all been taken aback by the popularity of the site.

This is in no small measure due to the help and support given by the members and moderators in the public forums. We were all agog when we reached our first million hit’s and congratulations were expressed all round.

Have we really become that complacent that when, just past our 2 nd official birthday, as we reach almost 4 million hits we dont think that these efforts are even worth a van sticker?

We travel to meet one another from the four corners of the land, have forged links, developed a strong bond and a commeradery with one another. Promoted our individual businesses on the site, built up a trade information system second to none. Agreed a defined level of service and given advice and assistance to the public.

Our little community has raised the bar so much so that we now attract
manufacturers, insurers, work providers, spares suppliers etc. offering help and support on things like training and sharing information.

And still we question wether that little lot is worth a van sticker to help promote it further. 🙄

Never mind Ken at least they’ll be on mine 😉

There seems to me no requirement to publish unless there is a total breakdown, as John says if someone blatently breaks or flaunts the law then I think we should.

But and, this is a big but, how do we warn people not to use certain repairers should they prove to be unreliable? Is it not only fair to the public that they should be informed?

    K.

That should be quite simple ken if they dont appear in our data base we do not recommend them, it’s that simple.

In the fullness of time UKW membership will be viewed as a quality mark.

That will encourage those who are dithering about to get on board and sign up.

    Re: Sanctions

I can see that there is very little to divide us on most points as they will be based on common sense. For now we should concentrate on keeping it simple and lay out the bare bones of our policy.
Later on we will have to flesh these topics out by playing out some “WHAT IF ” scenarios.

The reason I say this is that I think we need to take things back one step and actually read the UKW members charter as this will form the basis of a contract between the UKW member and customer. This will be the yardstick that customers will beat us over the head with if they think we are in breach of in any part, or any reasonable interpretation of it. As we all know lads, interpretation is what it’s all about.
There should be no room for error or misrepresentation of it and it needs to be bomb proof.

I feel that at the moment there are one or two rules in it that that may cause a problem later on. Not in what is meant but in how it reads.

Therefore I would ask that you download it off the site and post your views
as the charter is the document that everything else hangs upon. This should be as important to us as the A.C. of UKW as the magna carter or declaration of independence is to others.

I will reserve my own points for now as I do not wish to influence your own appraisals.

Re: Missing out on spares sales

Remember Lads we are a community first, That’s how we started and should all else fail, that is what I hope we will allways remain.

This whole site started from a simple e-mail list of like minded souls in a given trade who had remarkably similar problems. It has grown out of all proportion to what the initial expectations were.

The admin team have at all times bent over backwards to respond to what members have requested with new services, idea’s and forums.

All the help, ideas and support that has be given by us guy’s as moderators has, i’m sure been regarded by admin as invaluable.

My message to you all is that most of the flack that the admin team are getting in this thread is being addressed. We will get to where we need to be, of that I am convinced.

But if we push to quickly for new bell’s and whistles for the site right now, we will end up with quick fix’es instead of a plan for sustained growth. We need to do things properly to a plan, instead of trying to operate on the fly.

To combat and overtake the likes of e-spares with their megger million pound set up is no mean ambition. Should, we even contemplate, or entertain the idea of such an audacious goal ? 😯

Your Dam Right We Should ! 😉

So let’s cut the guy’s a little slack, and help them work on the battle plan. 😀

    Re: Hoover Fridge Freezer

Might be worth totally defrosting it first, as it could have built up that much frost on the hidden evaporator within the rear wall that the fan blades are catching on a build up of ice, when you turned it up to maximum.

    Hi Alexis,

There could be quite a few causes for this from :- faulty thermostat/ heating element, blockages in the water metering system, to faulty programer.

intermittent faults are the worst to track down i’m affraid.

Might be a good idea to use repars @ on the front page for this one. 😉

Re: Indesit DG6145 (narrow one) – causes mains RCD to cut ou

Any dampness or water around electrical leads or connections can and often will cause the RCD to trip, that is exactly what it is there for.

The only thing I can suggest that again with the plug pulled out, you try to investigate where the dampness or water is coming from but only if the source is external to the appliance.

If you susspect that the leak is internal, then really it’s a job for a proffessional.

    Re: RULES

Before I put my foot in it for a second time. Are the members who provide service on repairs@ to the public covered by their own set of terms and conditions with regards the customers obligations. Or are we having a standard well written set like those that probably appear in fine print on the back of Ken’s invoices.

I think that this is an oppurtunity to show that obligations are required on both sides of any contract, including rules. It will also show a balanced approach and duty of care by the A.C. towards it’s members rights.

Who was it taught me about little duck’s being all in a row 😆
We are not going to tell the whole thing on one page, what we are working on first is a basic introduction to try to give them the who, what , and why.

The latest draft gives them the who, what, & why bit and the where & when bit will look after it’s self when we have a presence in the open forums.

Then under seperate headings we will post the remainder (see below) after we have discussed, debated, concluded and drafted them all and sorted them out

    1 st. rules

    2 nd. sanctions

    3 rd. proceedures

let’s finnish the intro first and then we can put it to bed and move on to rules.

    Hi Handwasher,

First things first, pull the plug out ! and making sure the crocks have all been removed from inside. Try drawing the machine forward so that you can tilt it backwards at an angle of about 45 degrees hold it there for about ten seconds or so and see if water comes out of the lower back of the appliance.

If it does then do not plug the machine back in as it means that there is an internal leak within the machine. If this proves to be the case then call in an engineer as this is not a job for the unexperienced.
