ModeratorRe: Sunday – Day Off
ok, not related to the start of this thread, but a bad weekend.
1) Saturday recieve letter from customers solicitor demanding £300 for damaged floor (the machine was already pulled out when we arrived and left out when we left so i smell a set up here)
2) gales last night took 2 ridge tiles of my roof.
3) some B****** stole the spare wheel from my Citroen car, and the tool kit that apparrantly lives inside it! When, I dont know as I only noticed it today. (the police say there has been a spate of these recently in the area, no doubt they now have a full set to sell.)
4) Leyton Orient and spurs both lost!eastlmark

Alex, the kitchen roll thing was not a criticism. If someone has taken to trouble to scan a piece of kitchen roll then they get full marks for originality.

Jonkem,
are the brush holders retained by a single screw? If so I have some…but they are not cheap.eastlmark

ModeratorRe: Compressor cross-reference
I think the problem Dave has is the age old one of compressors being identified by there horsepower and yet this is never actaully indicated on the compressor itself.
I think we would need to know the make and type of compressor already fitted to identify a replacement. Beware of some of the Korean compresors around right now as sometimes they are so tall they dont actually fit in the space provided despite them being listed as an alternative.January 28, 2004 at 9:25 pm in reply to: HELP! ModeratorRe: HELP! TUMBLE DRYER ON FIRE! HELP! TUMBLE DRYER ON FIR
Sorry, My suggestion about the socket (I didnt really mention the plug as i assume this is brand new) is only based on my experience that nearly all “fires” I have come across have been from poor connections in the socket causing that very noticeable electrical smell. I dont know anything about your installation and for all I know the socket could be directly behind the appliance and as the fire was so severe it may not be so obvious where it originated. You hadnt pointed out that this was ruled out by the fire brigade.
But now you have mentioned the word “american” and as far as I know, all “American” tumble driers sold here need to be connected to a 30amp supply point and hence shouldnt have a plug/ socket arrangement in anycase. But then you said it did have a plug so maybe it isnt an American large capacity type after all.
Anyway, I am sure i will read the whole story in tommorrows Walthamstow Guardian.

mmmm, A brand new dryer catcing fire. a very rare occurance I think. Electrical burning smell? I hope the investigators have also taken the socket the appliance was plugged into. As a retailer myself, i would be interested to know which make it was though.

ModeratorRe: What would you recommend?
There is a conflict of interest between selling new appliances while also (mainly) being a service company as we could be in a position to profit by needlessly writing off a appliance in order to gain a sale. However, nowdays we would probably make more money from repairing an appliance than selling one, given the extra visit and possibility of having to send 2 engineers to deliver the things.
Over the years we have pulled out of retail and then gone back into it again, why? because our customers kept telling us they wanted to buy from us, as we know about machines and have the respect in the area to be trusted and they know we will (hopefully) still be there when it brakes down to go and fix it and possibly, but rarely theses days, also carry out any under warranty service.
We have also done well on selling unheard of brands for the same reason, trust. Philco, Caravelle (!!?? and another similar one that started with a C that I cannot remember) Bauknecht, Brandt, Asko, Gorenje have all been sold to customers who claim they have never heard of them. Even Candy, we were shipping shed loads of P807’s well before they were ever on a Liverpool football shirt on account that they had a stainless steel tub. (I remember cutting a perspex lid for one in our shop to show this off and a customer complained when we delivered one as it didnt have the clear top on it!)
Andy, you say about the old hoover being a good machine but did you think that at the time? No way, looking back at those days the Hoover was junk compared to the Zanussi sl and washcrafts, Philco Bendix and AEG’s Even Indesit L5’s and 6’s. The Hoover and Hotpoint failure rate was what most of us built their business on. In Hindsite, compared to today’s machines they were well made and durable and usually lasted 10 -15 years but reliable? No way.eastlmark

ModeratorRe: CDA dishwasher
I have just been to look at this and it is the programme indicator lights that are flashing rather than the programme selector lights. As the buttons are remote from the board I think it is these that are shorting, microwave oven style. This machine does have no on off switch either which is a bit of a worry. Does anyone remember the old Ocean german washing machine that had no on off switch?

Well well. Remind me to ask you what the hell those funny Drum Pulleys with springs and counterweights are all about?
we used to strip those pulleys in customers houses (for chargeble calls that is),had to file all the holes just a shade and rebuild them with a bit of graphite grease, (never test them the first time with the lid off though as customers would compain about the black marks on the ceiling) had them running sweet with never a recall after that. The trick to test them was to have the thing spinning at 500 rev and switch it off and switch back on at a precise time to launch it into the fast spin. I could do 18-20 calls a day back then…somehow.

ModeratorRe: HOTPOINT WM32S
John, you can get exploded diagrams of most models at:
http://www.theservicecentre.co.uk/Service/fr_shop.htmlJust enter the model number and when you get the list of parts available, click on the jigsaw in the detail column, This should open acrobat viewer in your pc (assuming you have it) and show you a detailsed exploded diagram. Only problem is that it doesnt include your model number for some reason.
By the way, GDA will accept a faxed trade order and give discount even for a debit card payment. -
