ModeratorRe: AEG L76685FL heating element failed for a second time
From what I can see the steam machine takes in just enough water to cover the heater and then boils it. What worries me about that system is unless your floor is level it is possible for some parts of the heater to be more submerged then others. All heaters these days contain a thermal fuse ( unlike the old days when I have had washing with brown dots on where the heater had toasted them) This fuse is set a temp low enough so the outer drum could not catch fire. if the machine is not reasonably level front to back it may be possible to exceed the fuse temp and blow it
you also have to remember that 1 or 2 hot washes a week and if you use the steam function means your heater get more use than most
I am not saying you are at any fault here as the manufacturers can design with use in mind but it seems more and more its cost that drives things not quality.
if the heater has blown look at it when it comes out and look for
limescale would have to be quite a bit to blow it
colour differences in the metal. steel changes colour when its heated. you only have to look at a motorcycle exhaust as it comes out of the cylinder to see the hottest parts. different colours mean different temps have been reached but only if the heater is above the waterlinemechanical damage from coins etc
you could also see if they are prepared to guarantee this heater for any length of time regardless of the time left on your warranty. all new parts should come with some warranty as a fitter I guarantee all parts I fit so I assume they will as well. As a guide ask them how long they would guarantee it if the part was fitted outside warranty

provided the stats are correct then its overheating. so its got to be an airflow problem.
blocked filter, condenser etc or overloading

ModeratorRe: bosch wtw84360gb container fault
the container light is meant to come on when the container is full but the switch to detect this is by the pump at the bottom. the chances are the water sump is full of fluff
pull out the condenser .(behind the cover on bottom left) about half way back inside on the floor is a little removable cover. the cover has 2 simple latches. remove this cover and you can put your hand in and see how much fluff is in there. if it needs cleaning its quite a strip down as the left hand side has to come off

the steel tail of the tap is only for initially cutting the hole. its normally corroded so much you can get it out easily ( not needed after hole is made does not affect water seal). Also poke the hole in the pipe to make sure its clear.
then screw tap back in
warning do not remove the body clamped around pipe only the tapDave

Chas_n wrote:The instruction manual does not say that salt should not be provided in the form of tablets.
The instruction manual says that the amount of salt used should be determined by the water company’s figures for water hardness (which it was) not by simply setting the salt setting to maximum (which is what he did).
What evidence do you have that the salt in 3 in 1 tablets is less salty than salt in bags? Would a chemist agree with you?
Do you really believe that any heating element can be kept entirely clear of scale, and if not, what is a reasonable thickness for the element to tolerate? Is it 5 thou?
Presumably I am incredibly lucky then, that my previous dishwashers, washing machines and immersion heaters all tolerate our medium hard water.
And of course, presumably Bosch would never dream of saving themselves 50p on the cost of a component, thereby introduced planned obsolescence?
Anyway, it now has 3 in 1 and full hard water bagged salt – my guess is that it will react in the same way as your car does to winter roads – by corroding away. And good riddance to it, will be my view. The element has probably not failed as such. All elements in situations like this have to have an internal thermal fuse to break the circuit if the temp rises above a set limit ( fire protection). Temp rise on the element can be due to limescale but also to lack of flow due to blocked filters. had one fail recently and the centre filter was well clogged up
and no i do not like the design. there is another manufacturer who has produced a mod kit to use a previous heater design which is far superior in my opinion

there will be no fuses
its possible the same switch operates the fan and the lamp. this switch is located behind the knob

when you test the cooker element disconnect the wires so you are only reading that one element
and it goes without saying “make sure its switched off”

if machine has been working there for a while then it may be :-
those self cutting valves have a habit of corroding and blocking. turn off the water so you can unscrew it and inspect the metal cutting tail. it may well be rusted almost closed. clear it and put it back. done lots of them
