Re: Amusing Anecdotes & Other Tales

I had a call last night from a customer saying that her machine, a Hotpoint WM83 was making a strange buzzing noise all the time, even when switched off. She said that as she had a hearing aid it made the noise seem much louder and was driving her to distraction. I asked if the noise continued when the machine was unplugged and both taps turned off, she insisted the noise was still there. I told her that as there was no battery back up on this machine, it could not possibly be causing the noise. She is an older lady and was obviously upset so I called this morning. Sure enough I to could here a faint buzzing noise. I opened the cupboard at the side of the machine and found a small ‘ Lady Shaver’ buzzing away merrily in a small metal tray in the cupboard, how it had switched on is a mystery but the batteries must be exceptional, it had been running for 48 hours. 😀

Interesting point there Toni, it may be stupid of me but I have never carried a fire extinguisher. I wonder just how many others in the trade do. After reading your post I will be obtaining one ASAP.

Model number would be a good place to start. 😉 Can you give us all the details from the rating plate, including the PNC number.

Sounds like an oddball one that. Can you see if the heater is drawing current by checking the meter?

    Test info on the way.

PS. You didn’t actually wait 3 hours watching it did you?

In a similar vein, I was once called to a Hotpoint 1600, customer complained of a leak. The bottom left hand corner of the machine had rusted. Closer investigation, with eyes and nose soon revealed that the cause of the ‘leak’ was her Jack Russell terrier. 😀

A ‘commom sense’ gene that can be transplanted into kitchen fitters and plumbers. Yes it may need removing sometime in the next few years, I do need it connected to all the supplies to effect any repair or service test, no it is not my job to smash the new tiles you have sealed it in with 👿

Can supply a diagram if needed, but agree with Simon, the stat situated at about 12.05 o.clock, in the door surround would be my next call after the two main stats, then the timer.

Re: What makes door seal rubber turn to grey goo?

The problem is that if you asked most people to describe ‘rubber’ they would say that it is black, fairly strong, and pliable, when in its natural state it is gooey, slimy, sticky, yellowy greyish stuff. It is only the chemicals and carbons added to it that give it its strength and rigidity, and it is the various chemical reactions of the detergents, fats (acids) bleaches, skin creams etc that help it to return to its natural state.

E-mail sent, it is for Hotpoint model TDC 30 after DC93 which is about the same age as your machine. Let us know if it does the trick.

    Jim.
