nice pic. 🙂 not seen one like that for a while. Lots of mains filters going that way though.
If the heat has been cutting off then you have two faults. On balance I would get a reliable local engineer to have a look. Motor failures are not that common on these machines.

OBIX wrote:Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I can revolve the drum without much effort.

It was working fine until yesterday, although occasionally it would stop heating in mid-cycle.. operating cold I guess. Turning it off and on again always resolved that.

As soon as I turn it on (press the on/off) it starts to buzz and nothing else happens… it doesn’t start to tumble although the timer still turns.

Any other thought would be appreciated. By the way, it’s only 2 years old.. are Hotpoint Tumble Dryers any good?

    Thanks.

How do you know it stopped heating in mid cycle ?? did you open the door? You should avoid stopping the machine in mid cycle unless in an emergency. You can and will cause premature thermostat failure by opening the door in mid cycle. In normal operation the temperature control stat will switch the heat on and off. you should not have to “turn it on and off”. Failing thermostats could cause intermittant heater failure.

If you can revolve the drum easily that could , as litlor suggests be a broken belt, and may account for the burning smell.

Can you revolve the drum from inside by hand, it should be possible to turn the drum with a lttle force. If is very stiff you could have a motor failure. A capacitor failure would not cause a burning smell.

It could be a motor failure. Not a major expense, would suggest your try looking
    here
Be sure to remove the plug and do not use it again until you have had it looked at.
You are possibly within the five year parts g/tee but with Hotpoints’ labout at almost £90.00 you should be able to get it repaired for less than that.

It can also be caused by a badly routed outlet/waste pipe allowing water from the sink to enter the drum, if the outlet pipe is connected directly to the sink waste pipe. If you turn off the cold water and it stops the drum from filling then a faulty valve is the only possible cause.

    Regards.

Just having another think about this, does your machine work OK if you set it to a rinse & spin programme? If it does then you may have a problem with the hot fill. Not sure, but if prog 8 ‘daliy wash’ is a cold fill only then that may account for your machine working on that one setting.

    Re: Indesit W93

No. This machine went into error mode on every programme, flashing 8 times. These codes are only a pointer to the general area of the fault, and you only find out all the possible causes with years of experience. If you are in any doubt, get it looked at by a competent engineer. The modules are far to expensive to replace on a ‘suck it, and see’ basis.

You buy a £80/£90 module that either does not cure the fault or blows because the initial fault is elswhere, or you get an expert who will have to stand the cost should any error of judgement he or she makes do the same, the choice is yours.

    Re: calls for servicing

When I get a request to service a newish machine, I say, “is it making any unusual noises or leaking?” , when they answer no, I say, “there you are, serviced free of charge ” 🙂

On the flip side, how many times does a customer ring up and request a service, you ask them if there is a fault and they say, no it just needs a service. You tell them that if it is working correctly then there is little or nothing to service and they then tell you that the machine is, leaking, noisy, not spinning etc, etc. They know it has a fault but somehow think that a simple ‘service’ will correct it.

    Re: Known Error Codes

Hotpoint DC27/28 NB different to the codes for DWF40/50

    Led 1= Prewash / 3hr
    Led 2= Wash / 6hr
    Led 3= Rinses / 9 hr
    Led 4= Drying / 12hr

    LED. illuminated
    1 = Overflow ( water in base )

1+2 = Pump timeout, or Software recognition error ( timer not programmed, wrong keypad)

1+3 = Circulation pump not working

    2+3 = Not filling

2+4 = Heating circuit not working

    2 = Solenoid valve ‘broken’

3 = Thermistor (NTC) cicuit not working

4 = Temp not reached whilst heating ( poss NTC detached from casing).

It is usually necessary to ‘reset’ the machine after a fault code has been displayed.

    Resetting.
Switch dishwasher OFF, rotate the selector switch to STOP/CHANGE and switch on, after a few seconds the LEDS will go out enabling a new programme to be selected.

There is also a 20 minute test routine, details available if needed. 😉

    Re: Hotpoint WMA31 Washing machine

There could be several reasons, first make sure that you do not have an unbalanced load, will the machine spin when it is empty? Set it to spin and wait at least 3 or four minutes to be certain.

If you are certain that you are loading correctly, then if the motor is washing the fault could be a failure of the control module or the pressure switch system. Not easy to self diagnose without proper experience.

Re: Indesit Washer/Dryer Double Cold Water Inlet Valve

What is the actual problem with the valve ? That type of valve is available but not as common. However if the fault is a OC solenoid, you can with care remove the solenoid from any other similar valve and swop it with the one on yours. Not sure if they are in the shop@ but I wouldn’t mind betting they soon will be. 😉

    Re: Creda T622CW condenser dryer

Changing belts on tumble dryers is not easy. This particular one involves a fair bit of dismantling, it would be difficult to go into great detail in a public forum. It is like Chris Tarrant always says, “its only easy if you know the answer”. 😉

We cannot assess your capabilties, only you know that. If you do go ahead, make sure to remove the plug and watch the bare metal edges, they are very sharp.

    If in doubt look here

I see more tumble dryers that the general public has ‘had a go at’ particularly when changing the belt, and made a complete horlicks of, than most other basic faults.

Had this on a hotpoint DF53. It was caused by a small hole in the bellows seal, mouse damage. 🙂 It was an absolute pain to get the retaining clip back on.

    Hotpoint Part No’s

    Valve moulding 1801538
    ‘O’ rings 1801552
    Bellows 1801539
I only had to change the bellows seal.
