well done seamy.
eventually got access to this machine again and after changing the heater everything is o.k. now.
i know a new heater has a much higher resistance than 1 meg, but given that it would have passed a pat test i suppose i chose to ignore it.
thanks to all contributors.

could be way off the mark. reading your post i’ve a feeling i heard a mate of mine tell me that the thermistor wires can fail in the plug. ie appear ok but be held on by sleeve with conductor inside broken. couldn’t contact him tonight for confirmation.

yes i’ve seen this before on zanussi but more often on hoover.if you have a copy of tds disks then the repair is shown in great detail pointing out the offending component which can be replaced.
however must point out that soldering in a new triac has failed to cure it a couple of times.keithwilliams

no i didn’t blow up the tubes to cause this fault although i did blow down to the airchamber. i’m interested in the heater mention. i did megger it and the reading is just below 1 meg.
i thought if that was it then the diagnostics would have picked it up.i think i’ll pop round and hook up a heater and see what happens. and yes it is a top loader.
thanks

ParticipantRe: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?
actually this isn’t annoying its hilarious.
got a call to go to a hotpoint thats noisy.
when i got there the lid was off and a vaguely familiar piece of metal.
i opened the door and rotated the drum and sure enough the bearings were shot. when i said this he proudly said that that was his conclusion too and because they’d made it “impossible” to get at the flywheel he “made the job easier” for me by taking an angle grinder and cut a fifteen inch square section out of the cabinet. now i recognised that bit of metal! he only called me out cos he didnt have a tool to pull the bearing out.
needless to say i walked away after politely pointing out how thick he was. then i rang every repair guy i know to have a bloody good laugh.keithwilliams

if this is a whirlpool clone do you mean the start light? if so its probably flashing in which case count the flashes and refer to common fault codes thread.

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool DWH B10W fault.
flashing 4 times will most certainly be the diaphragm switch assembly.when you say you took it out i assume you mean properly from the outside of the sump underneath. you say that there wasn’t much grease however it doesn’t always take much.another issue can be a faulty microswitch which i have encountered a few times. you would have to test for continuity through it in the switched position. also you may not have reassembled it properly.
if it is the switch then you must buy the whole part as the spring in an ordinary but identical looking switch will be too strong.
if in doubt get someone out to do it. where i live total cost to replace part is £56.keithwilliams
ParticipantRe: lg WM-1080FHD washer bearings
hopefully that price includes the spider. i normally pay around £15 for just the bearing kit. approx £40 for spider.

ParticipantRe: Pat test failed,What mega reading do i need
a class 1 static appliance(heavier than 18kg)is normally tested at 1Meg. if its reading less than that then you can sometimes bring the reading back up by running it for a while,(admittedly moreso on cookers/ovens) then retest.
however to confuse matters further our tutor on city and guilds course said that you can pass a static appliance at 0.3meg if it has a heater in it.keithwilliams
