It’s liable to be an electrical fault Mark, at the age and with the use I’d suggest you bin it in all honesty as it will cost more than it’s worth to have it repaired. For the use you’re giving it though, if you want reliability, then forget the cheap brands as they’ll only give you trouble in all likliehood especially when under loads like that. I’m actually surprised that you’re Hoover has lasted that long without fault.

Parts on Hoover are free up until 5 years old, but the caveat is that they cannot be in what they class as “commercial use”, to most manufacturers being in premises like yours would fall under that catagory and the warranty may not be offered. When you get a replacement check this thoroughly and don’t trust the salesmen in any of the big chains as I have had first hand experience of them misinforming customers on this very issue on several occasions.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: P&G

    I agree Del.

I have already tried to get Kev, who has a better rapor with CDSL and Wash Vac to see if they will sponsor a forum each, low cost good advertising for them. £750 to these companies is fuck all really, merely a token gesture.

Once the name gets bigger and the exposure to the public grows then the site will become a portal to our services, promoting the independent repairers and feeding us work. At least that’s the way I see it happening over the coming year or so. The thing of that is, which of them wants left out and left behind?

Beyond that, who knows as there’s so much can be done from this starting point.

    Hi Raffy,

There are a few around but they’re mostly targetted at the barbeque domino hobs and really always have been for the UK/EU so I think you may struggle in all honesty.

Is there a reason why you want to extract from a normal hob using one of these? I ask because you’re looking at serious cash from Wolf or Gaggenau I presume simply because of the distance that it has to draw air down and I doubt they’d be quiet either as it would require a fairly chunky motor to get the draw.

Re: Bosch, excellence does not come as standard

    Hi Paul,

I take your points and agree to some extent that Bosch perhaps may have been able to do better in this instance but in fairness, irrespective of the price paid for an appliance in the end it’s a machine and machines will break down. They may do that in two days or twenty years, who’s to say? And even a £60,000 Mercedes Benz can suffer a mechanical failure and you can bet your shirt they would not go as far as Bosch have done in terms of meeting the cost. At least Bosch have made some concession and how long should they, after the initial warranty, resonably offer this? From a commercial perspective I think they’ve been pretty reasonable in all honesty.

I think you did the right thing in buying a better quality product and it’s a real shame that didn’t quite go to plan in this case, but these things happen as they say. 🙁

And trust me, some of the cheaper products may well not have lasted two years and you’d have gotten no concession whatsoever from many manufacturers in this industry.

And it happened again this afternoon!

Robert goes into a Smeg customer and she says, “you know there’s a really good website you can get loads of information off on whitegoods…”! She was a bit surprised when she learned that the person that dealt with the call was me and Robert told her I ran this site though. 😉

She was doubly impressed when it turned out that the “local repairer” who had diagnosed a main PCB fault was wrong and all it was was a loose tacho magnet on the motor and saved herself a tidy sum. 😀

I’ve had no issues through MFI Alex at all, they all seem to be resolved by MFI just fine unlike when NESN where doing it were I had loadsa grief.

Speak to Tony or Paul Brooks and they should resolve that for you I hope.

    Re: Another Idea

Thanks JP and John, I do think this is a great idea and an ideal starting point to the venture that will get results.

The idea of the card is in no way set in stone and suggestions like yours John is exactly why I asked the question, it’s a bloody good idea. Like most things, the more ideas and input the better it gets.

Martin, as you don’t do manufacturer service you’re not as liable to get as many no-access calls but believe me it is a problem, especially when the kids are off school and the weather is nice. 😉 Some people do just bill the customer but for the most part we are simply expected to absorb that cost.

The important thing for me is that this is an idea that costs us nothing and proves that we can work with large organisations to glean results for them and, as a by-product, improve ourselves in the process. To me, that is the goal here because if we can succeed with this who knows what else it will lead to in time? Well, I have some ideas, but I’ll shut it till I know they can be realised. 😆

In the end, what’s to be lost from trying? Nothing! With loads of potential gain for the trade in the long term, not least in credibility besides the potential financial savings which in this case are not high I grant you. But, where else can we apply the same basic principals? You see, as a starting point this may only serve as a springboard to other things in time as it’s only the nucleus of an idea.

Re: Intsalling a vent system for a tumble dryer

    Hi Andy,

The idea of the vent hose is to do as short a run as possible with as little bends as possible as well. The reason is so that you get maximum airflow with minimum restrictions to that airflow, bends and dips slow down the air and dips also alow places where steam can condensate and leave puddles of water, this can lead to restricted airflow as well as bad smells, bacterial growth and improper operation of the dryer. The same goes for the vent to the outside air and I would strongly advise the use a proper vent kit which Dave should be able to help you with if one is not listed in the shop.

I would also suggest the cheap plastic hose as it’s more flexible than aluminium and will not allow condensation to form on the outside as easily, assuming that the cellar is unheated that could be an issue.

Other than that knocking holes in the wall is purely down to how confident you feel. 😉

    Hope that helps.

I am not familiar with that unit but two ideas off the top of my head are…

My first guess would be that the anti-condensate line is incorrect or for some reason not performing as it should do. In warm weather you would often see condesation appearing at the door seals and there is a pipe usually taken down by the doors with the hot gas in it to heat that and stop this condensation forming. You should be able to visibly see that condensation if that is the case.

The other option is an insulation failure in the bottom of the unit.

Either presents a challenge to repair and is most certainly not a DIY job if it can be repaired at all. That said, whether it’s even worth considering is debatable at best.

    Re: The Engineer’s Opinion

Bet you all thought I’d forgotten about this! 😉

Well, I didn’t! Trevor has gotten it up and running this afternoon and it need a LOT of work with templates, but the idea is far from dead adn in fact I have been thinking of a lot of uses for this.

A test survey that should be open to anyone is available at http://survey.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/output/test1 and it’s rough, with only the default template which is one of the things I need to work on. I would rather that this was kept quiet until it’s ready for general consumption please as it is rough as hell right now.

The last page is also in German as it’s a German module, but it basically says, thanks the data is recieved.

I will be learning and working on it in the coming days and weeks but I thought I’d let you know that the idea was very much alive and kicking. Usually when I say I’ll do something, I do it even if it does take a while to get it to the stage I want it at. 😉

Yeah I meant to say, if you do the math Martin lets suppose that every engineer gets one no-access call per day on average just as an example…

There are over 250 trade members here of which about 60{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} run companies with employees, when you actually even that out you end up with a VERY rough average of 2.5 engineers per account. 2.5 times 250= 625 no-access calls a day, = 1562 no-access calls a week, = 81000+ a year!

The figures are quite startling when you actually start multiplying it out like that and even if it’s only half that it’s still a sizeable amount of potential hits for UKW as well as providing the side benefits for everyone in general.

Then how many people ask for your company’s details? Can we use these to leave the details? Do we want to do something else and try and get a deal on printing?

See, so many possibilities and ways to promote ourselves, UKW and anyone that wishes to foot (or partly foot) the bill for it. Like I should care if I’m not paying for it, too right I’ll go for the free option every time (and don’t anyone dare make a Scots joke outta that). 😉

One step at a time Martin eh? 😉

This is an ideal starting point as it’s not excessive volumes we’re dealing with and the idea of an “out-card” is the same for almost everyone as we all only need the same details on it. Invoices are totally different and anyway, I print them straight off the PC, I do not use carbons, if I did I’d want tractor feed to a dot-matrix printer in an A4 format which is expensive and not what you’d need.

In other words, I do not want to be handwriting 20+ sheets a day.

By contrast, for the single employee, handwriting the sheets is not so much of an issue, but then my aim here is to eliminate those bits of paper totally eventually and do it ALL electronically. Therefore, that would be of no use, also, for most agency work on any real scale pre-prepared paperwork is provided for the likes of Whirlpool and Lux agents, so again of no use to them.

Sorry Cloviscat, some people have bee a tad tardy in getting their details into the directory here. 😕

    You could try…

E P Electrical on 01289 306271 who cover a host of TD codes.

RDA on 01698 749488 who cover all EH codes.

James Stewart based in Kelso who also covers TD on 01573 224411.

Not sure who does what products though I’m afraid.

Ehm guys, 76X3719 can be replaced with a Candy element or the Zanussi or Ariston I can’t remember which but when in a pinch. 😉

Doing ovens you should really carry one of each as they will fit loads of machines.
