Re: Bosch 1200 Classixx Washing machine won’t stop spinning

It’ll most likely be an open circuit or down to earth heating element. Unplug machine and check with a meter to be sure.

One of this customer’s complaints was…

Her: “This machine you sold me is playing up again and I want an engineer out today to look at it.”
Me: “Okay, I’m sorry to hear that. What’s wrong it it?”
Her: “Whenever I try and start a cycle the door lock light flashes.”
Me: “Okay, and you’ve made sure the door is firmly closed?”
Her: “No, the door is open.”
Me: “Okay… well, that isn’t really a fault. It’s the machine telling you to close the door before the cycle can start.”
Her: “Well, I don’t see why I can’t start the cycle then close the door when I want, not when the machine wants me to.”
Me: “Okaaaaay… well, I’m afraid I can’t redesign the machine and this isn’t really the sort of fault that would be covered by your guarantee.”
Her: “Oh, another fault conveniently not covered. Your guarantee doesn’t seem to cover any faults. Well, I still want an engineer out to confirm this is how it’s meant to be, because I’m sure it’s not right.”
Me: “I can come out but you need to understand if the machine starts fine with the door closed, then you’ll still be charged a call out charge.”
Her: “A call out charge! When I have a machine under guarantee? *rant rant rant*”

:rolls: I still have nightmares that she’s going to call again one day!

Worth knowing but I’ve learnt from bitter experience that if a customer is difficult when you first meet them they’ll inevitably be a pain for the next few months too. I learnt that on one of the first washing machines I sold – difficult customer but I bent over backwards to help. Wasted tons of my time sorting out stupid complaints she had, even when she called at 2am in the morning!

In the end told her if she was so unhappy she could have a refund. She said she wanted a refund but would keep the machine! Told her to take me to court in the end and never heard any more from her.

Had a bloke last week enquiring about a new fridge, “It has to be silver and 170×60”. Told him we could do an LG for £449. “Thanks for that, I’ll go see if I can find it cheaper online and come back to you”.

Luckily a very rare model so came back tail between his legs saying he couldn’t find anything online and I could he please buy it. Told him to look harder online as there was no way I’d be helping him any further. Lost a sale but the satisfaction – and probably future hassle saved – was worth it .

1985. If you don’t have access to AEGs trade site you can look up exploded views, part numbers etc on their retail site too: –

    Re: Repair Easy

Downright scandalous that they can advertise it as “If we can’t fix it, we’ll replace it, or your money back”, when actually it’s “If we can’t fix it we’ll charge you £45 and give you back the difference”.

I guess they’re never going to follow through on their promise to replace it when they can pocket £45 for doing nothing.

Check the hoses, quite often these are at full stretch preventing you from moving the machine. If you pull too hard the plastic connector will snap and you’ll have a wet washing machine and floor!

If the hoses are loose a spray of furniture polish in front of the the front feet can help you get it moving.

DPFs are a bit of a con though – I know plenty of people driving round on normal diesel who have problems with them. Personally I think any engine needs a good hard run at high revs every once in a while, of which I’m happy to oblige :).

Cheers, thanks Dave. Tried using the new search on here but couldn’t get it to find anything. Will let the customer know the bad news, although great knowing what part it is as hopefully might have a chance of sorting a repair.

    Re: Best form of advertising?

I don’t pay for any advertising except Gumtree – not sure if this is available in Ireland but only £4.50 a week and catches those who are looking for replacement machines.

Aside from recommendations, the two biggest sources of work I have are: –

Google Places page with good reviews. This is invaluable, only takes 15 minutes to setup and doesn’t cost a penny. If you don’t have any reviews on yours, ask regular customers to write some.

Van signwriting – mine only cost £50 because I didn’t want stupid graphics that no-one can read at 70mph, just big bold company name, description, phone number and web address.

Do something a bit mad or different that will get you, with a photo advertising your business, in the paper. I did this when I converted my van to run on vegetable oil, big photo of my van with phone number and web address on the side in the local paper. Dread to think how much that would have cost me if I was paying to advertise! Most of the customers I got from it were mad eco-types but paid for the conversion and me wasting a couple of hours with a photographer!

Finally, add a link to your signature on here to your website. UKWG is a high ranking site for “washing machine repairs” on Google, so adding a link to your site on here instantly adds to your credibility on Google when people are searching for washing machine repairs.

Also I’ve found that as well as dispenser hose the pressure chamber at the front can sometimes leak and fill the base with waterm, causing problems with damp inside machine & associated PCB/motor problems. I always whip it off and Debor in place now on all machines because I don’t want any recalls :).

iadom wrote:Not much room in my vehicle and reading this from the article above is another reason I won’t be ‘converted’

Not trying to “convert” anyone, just put the option out there as, let’s face it, with diesel at £1.40+ per litre can take a huge bite out of margins on jobs, especially those of us in rural areas who do a lot of mileage, and “free” fuel is a great cost saver.

But obviously if you drive a new van under warranty then you’d be mad to do this – if a dealer catches a glimpse of it they’d be rubbing their hands with glee for sure.

As for that engine bay… plastic fanastic! Looks more like a warp drive than an engine – very posh .

Martin wrote:And where would I stick the auxiliary fuel tank?….on second thoughts, don’t answer that. 😈

That was the only downside . Have built a load of racking over the fuel tank though, to make up for it a bit.

I think your Astra has the same engine? It’s a squeeze to get it all in but in the end most of the plumbing runs along existing fuel and coolant lines, only new part is the heat exchanger which I just ran where I could along the edge of the engine bay. Certainly not enough room to squeeze a cat, though!

So, in other words virtually no modern diesel engine under 12 years old is safe to run on this stuff. 😉

    Jim.
Without conversion . That’s why you need to fit a heat exchanger, like the photos and manual I posted, rather than just chuck some veg oil in the tank.
