OK, sounds like you need to weigh things up here.

    1) How much was it new?
    2) How old is it?
    3) How much did you pay last time?
    4) Is it worth spending c. £130 on now?

Your suggestion of buying a Meile is excellent. They make superb machines, there are several condensers in their range. However, they are VERY expensive to purchase and the price of spares is truly scary. The good point is that you are unlikely to need any for a long time!

Bosch bought Balay years ago. If the washer’s under £300 or got an egg shaped access panel on the back it’ll be Spanish.

    Still, better than Merloni……

Yeah, low ohms across armature and field is typical with a brush motor – don’t forget to check for earth leakage. If motor speed is just running away you’re looking at a probable triac failure (the 3 leggedy beastie on the heat sink) rather than other components. It acts as a “chopper” to cut the tops and bottoms off the AC supply, thus regulating the voltage supplied to the motor. They can fail closed (no motor) or open (SPIN!). Beyond that it’s difficult to diagnose in situ and a lot of us opt for recon boards as a cost effective solution. I doubt you have that option over there!

    Can’t suggest much else really!

    Hi Jeroen,
I’m afraid to say we never did find out how this ended. The general concensus was that the module was the most likely problem as with so many of these Merloni built machines.

There are some good points to check in this thread to give you some guidance, but if you’re not sure get professional help.

The pad acts as a damper to the flapping of the belt,so the groove is perfectly normal. If the fan belt has been replaced, was it with a Genuine Zanussi belt? There are pattern ones available, but they tend to be a sloppy fit.

It’s on the end of the motor. The coil should read circa 2k ohms, and the little centre rotor should be magnetic. It should generate low voltage DC current. Hook up the test meter and spin the motor over on the drum pulley – you should get a reading – not sure what; never tried it. Pull the plug first though!

Where are you BTW? Can’t think of another poster from Africa.

    Good luck,

I’ve been to a few of these where the floor of the casing has distorted with the loading of the drive (drum) belt. This causes the pulleys to be no longer parallel to each other and the fan belt will fall off.

In 17 years I have never heard of an AEG motor being rewound. Sorry, but it just don’t happen. So, some sort of recon motor fitted, the fault you are describing is a speed control fault.

Either the “tacho” unit is not sending a signal back to the electronics, or there is an electronic failure in the PCB. Possibly an earth leak from the motor itself. A few things to check out then. If you have any doubts about your own abilities check in the Directories setion for a local UKW engineer or pop your postcode up in here and someone will pick up on it.

Whatever you do, PULL THE PLUG FIRST!

Final point – whilst these machines were absolutely first class it now rather elderly – don’t go mad with what you spend on it.

Bad luck Craig, sounds definitely electronics to me. The worse bit is the £120 (ish) is plus vat and p+p. However, think this through. Why has the board failed? Any blown tracking immediatley suggests external faults which must be investigated – heater, motor etc.

From your description the fault is slightly erratic so it is just feasible that there is a dry solder joint on the board. A careful visual inspection may reveal this.

However, if you have any doubts as to your own abilities, check the Directories section for a local UKW engineer, or, stick your postcode up in here and someone will pick up on it.

Whatever you do, PULL THE PLUG FIRST!

    Hi LeeA,
15 flashes doesn’t tally with any of the known faults. Applying logic, by 15 minutes into the programme, the machine should have filled, started tumbling and probably be into the heat sequence.

So, filling. You can probably hear water coming into the machine – is it running out at the same time? This can because by the drain hose being set too low, or fed to the bottom of the standpipe, leading to syphoning. Assuming fill, is the drum tumbling? The machine will try a few times before putting up an abort (clunking round).
Heat is where it gets complicated. There is a heater, a thermistor sensor and the computer board itself. Any one of these can and does fail; so if you have any doubts as to your own abilities check the Directories section for a UKW engineer in your area or put your postcode up in here and someone will pick up on it.

Whatever you choose to do – PULL THE PLUG FIRST!

    Good luck,
    Penguin45.

    Hi BF,
3 flashes indicates a problem in the heater control circuitry; possibly the thermistor sensor or the electronic board or even wiring.

It’s likely to be complex and technical whatever is wrong, so if you are not completely confident in your own abilities, check the Directories section to see if there is a UKW engineer in your area or stick your postcode up here and someone will pick up on it.

Re: Diplomat ADP 8132 – anyone want mine?

    Oh EJ….

The 5 year warranty… you get a Bosch/Siemens engineer in the first year for sure – the extended warranty will be through an insurance company, which means a work provider, which means a service provider; SO you may well meet your last engineer again!

Look, a lot of independants started off as company engineers – did the training courses, learnt it all and finally went on their own when company conditions became intolearable – for one, I did! With a good grounding, repairs to other machines are a matter of logic – they are, after all, all variations on the same theme!

Where it all goes wrong is that people are not coming into the service industry (if you ever get tired of stockbroking…… ), those of a more youthful disposition may well lack the company grounding and hence the skills to diagnose logically. 5 timers in your ADP8132 in 2 years? It doesn’t happen! I know these machines well and have NEVER fitted a programme unit to one – faults are always water level control and heater circuit problems – because of the water level problems. Oh, and blockages. Mustn’t forget them.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Bosch are advertising for engineers at present; surprising as they are generally well paid, trained and provided with spares and equipment. Really all rather worrying for the future.

Still, if you hit lucky with your independant engineer, their broad experience can’t be beaten!

We’re at the stage in Leeds where of the 35-40 engineers working the area, there are only 4 of us who actually repair dishwashers!

This is part of where this site comes into its own. In the Trade sections there are several Help forums which we all use to try and solve problems. After years at this, you think you know it all, but information is freely and willingly shared – even the obvious! I can’t recall anyone being called a prat for their lack of knowledge yet!

Maybe there’s hope for us all yet!

    Regards,
    Penguin45.

PS – Your handle has been nominated as funniest on site so far – nice one!

I just clicked on “add comment” and typed – seemed to work. BTW, I have as hostage the pink umbrella as originally fitted to your JD+C – is it worth anything – or shall I photgraph it to be added to the Gallery…….

    Heh, heh,
