Stop…. Front opens like a cupboard. Few screws round the soap drawer, the three bolts around the door seal and the spring latch in the filter flap to be released and the whole thing will swing open.

Motor is under the drum; brushes are in a carrier plate which can be removed after 4 screws are undone and the motor plug removed.

A selection of Miele carbons can be found HERE.

    Stay safe – power off.

Re: Hoovermatic Twin Tub Washer. Advice on Repair Costs Ple

It’s worth just asking round your local repairers if they’ve got anything left. We are notorious hoarders – I know for a fact that I’ve got a pump base in the garage. Don’t know exactly where it is, but I know it’s in there…

The problem with these oldies is that they are worth nothing. If you’re prepared to wield a screwdriver and a few spanners, these machines can be repaired very easily if you can track down the parts. They are far short of rocket science.

If it’s arcing, it’s almost certainly the brushes. There are motors from 4 different manufacturers fitted to this machine, so a rummage through THESE should find you appropriate replacements.

Remove the current ones to see if they are down to a few millimetres first – if there is plenty of carbon brush left, the motor is cooking and it all starts to get expensive.

    Power off first.

It might be appropriate if you described the noise….

Knocking, banging, scraping, crackling, rasping, dragging, groaning are all good identifiable sounds.

If it stops when you switch off on spin, I’d suspect crackling or rasping if it stops – this would indicate that the motor brushes may well be worn out and starting to make a poor contact.

    No, no, no…

Heater will read the usual c.25 ohms, motor 4/5 ohms across the armature and field coils and perhaps 100 ohms across the tacho (depends on the motor – tacho won’t be the problem anyway).

You’re looking for earth leakage. Megger the element to earth and the same with the motor contacts. Nominally you can get away with 2Mohms, but I wouldn’t stake a repair on it. The electronics just don’t like it.

Yeah, and the Penguin did ponder amidst the chaos…. That which makes it hot and that which swirls the water are each a part of their own (Unlike that of the Whyrlypoole…), so a repair may be possible at rather fewer groats than might be expected.
