Is this a translucent hose hose fitted into a white plastic fitting on the side of the tub? If so, this is just a steam breather hose. It simply ends under the tub and isn’t connected to anything.

If the tray under the machine is filling with water, this isn’t the culprit.

Power off, side panels off, see if the motor is actually free to turn. This is a relay start motor, it’s pretty elderly now, so may not be switching. If it isn’t, the motor may make a faint humming noise if you listen carefully.

Now you do the continuity check from the motor loom plug back to the pcb. If that checks out, all that’s left is the pcb. If you are lucky, a visual inspection of the board may show a burnt-out joint which can be re-soldered. If there is no damage, the board may have died – if there are tracks blown off the pcb, the motor and the pcb will need to be replaced. Probably time to give in and buy a decent machine if that is the case.

One of the sensors will have failed, so the pcb is no longer reading the temperature gradient between the front and the rear – it probably thinks the laundry is still damp.

If you are a little patient, one of the Miele chaps will give you a more definitive answer. Bear in mind that this is a Miele appliance – if it needs parts, you’re going to pay. Lots.

    Should be THIS ONE.

Might be an idea to drop an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk to confirm before ordering.

Door pivot and spring can be accessed by removing the lower cover panel (two screws), undoing the pivot bolts (10mm heads) and releasing the return spring (Careful, it’s quite powerful).

Unplugged, obviously or ask your installer to do this for you.

Ok, there are two release solenoids at the bottom of the fill matrix – the lowermost one (from memory) allows the water to run through the sand box and into the machine. Same procedure, you should get a resistance reading through the coil. When activated, you can usually hear a gentle humming noise. If you do, and the level doesn’t drop, the sand box will have solidified.

To deal with that eventuality, take a plastic handled screwdriver and gently and persistantly tap the sand box area – eventually the sludge breaks up and the water will start to flow.

Can you get on with this? People are starting to talk….. 😆

Single most likely cause of failure is wiring breaking in the pivot of the door.

If the motor has failed, it’s now over £200 to replace, so keep your fingers crossed.

Diagrams and parts can be found on http://www.bshcustomerservice.com – follow the links into the eShop facility. You will need the full model number – SMS4452GB/–.

Power off if you intend to resolve this yourself.

4 flashes is no drain detected in the time allowed. If the machine does not empty, you have blockage or drain pump failure. If it does empty, the problem lies with the water level sensor. This is the black grid in the sump under the filters. It is a diaphragm switch and is prone to filling up with fatty deposits, which hold the switch in the closed position. You may hit lucky with plenty of very hot water and an old toothbrush. The microswitch on the back is prone to failure, in which case you’ll need THIS.

THIS PART usually sorts out the spray tubes jumping out of position.

Power off if you need to inside the machine.

Heat not detected in the time allowed. Heater may have failed, plug may have burnt out or the pc may not be switching correctly.

Power off if you intend to investigate this yourself.

There are 12 versions of this machine – the 12nc number would help narrow things down.

The fault implies that the optical water sensor is at fault – it is not fitted to any of these machines as far as I can tell, so you should be looking at the black grille at 3 o’clock in the sump of the machine. It’s a diaphragm switch. These fill up with fatty deposits under the grill and prevent the switch behind from working properly. You may be able to scrub it clear with an old toothbrush and plenty of hot water. It’s a twist-fit from under the machine if more intensive cleaning is required. The microswitch can fil as well.

Power off if you think you need to remove the sensor.

The brushes start out at 1.5″ and wear down over time. They will be down to a few mill before the motor actually stops.

These Spanish machines used several different motors over the course of production. The ZEM/SOLE motor has a particular fault whereby the tacho magnet in the end of the motor works loose and causes problems with the speed control circuits in the electronic board. A wipe of contact adhesive and screwing it fully home sorts that particular problem.

Otherwise, you need to look at the dampers on the drum for resistance when “bounced” and check that the machine is fully and quickly draining. Beyond that, the motor may just be becoming old and tired or the electronics may not be behaving as they should.

It’s over 10 years old now, so don’t go mad with your spending on it.
