Thanks Martin, I don’t have access to Qualtex parts these days but it looks like Electrue GSK596 will do the job. Catalogues often mention the “Washcraft” series but I have never seen a machine that says Washcraft on it. 😕

Are you the same Whitegoodsman who posted a question about fan ovens on the DIYnot site? 😕

    Re: SPARES ACCOUNTS

I have only recently started using Masterpart but have been impressed with the comprehensive lists of models for each part. In some catalogues you get a photo of a spider or bearing kit and all it says is fits Indesit or Candy or some such so you never dare order it in case it’s the wrong one.

I know it’s no help but I wish I could step into your shoes in NZ. I have dreamed about emigrating to New Zealand for years and even got a job interview once. I don’t know if it is still the same now but at the time they allowed in 50,000 people a year from about a million or so that applied.

    Re: leaving appliances safe?

To an extent you have to do what the customer says as it is their appliance in their home. I think some of them are worried they will be charged extra for you re-assembling the machine and stripping it again so insist you leave it in bits. In extreme cases this has meant leaving a machine for a week, pulled out and with a pile of bits on the kitchen worktops. I suppose if I ever do get problems re. safety etc. in such cases I will have to start getting customers to sign a note to say that’s how they want things left.

I give a 3 month guarantee but would be willing to make it 12 months if they pay me £23.50. If it’s a DC07 I charge £35 to clear a blockage 😉

Bryan has a good point, there are some customers you are better off without so why resort to bull$hit methods in order to keep them? I have had at least 2 elderly customers who have brought vacuum cleaners to me for repair then made a huge fuss about me charging £10 to clear a blockage. They have not been back but good riddence I say 😈

    Re: White Knight Belt

Thanks. One of the belts he rejected was an 1830 but I think I will try that size when I have to do one of these machines myself. They all seem to be abandoning jockey pulleys that have worked fine for umpteen years in favour of these extreme tensions. I suppose the next thing will be an epedemic of failed motor bearings. Chris, I have seen this about “free work” mentioned on here before. Do you actually mean free advertising? It still costs the same in fuel, phone bills, insurance etc to do the work so I would say there’s no such thing as free work in this business 😕 .

Had another one of these with the same fault and managed to clear the blockage. No joy with the airline but I lifted the lid bit of the cyclone, illuminated it with a halogen inspection lamp, poked an old bicycle spoke down each cone and fished out lumps of fluff from the jets. You also have to turn the cyclone upside down and give it a good slapping to shift the fluff to the top ends of the cones. 8)

    Re: Second Hand Spares

It helps if you know where the source machine came from. If I go to a job and it turns out the machine is beyond economic repair i will often take it for spares or reconditioning. The faulty parts will be discarded in either case. If I can offer the customer the choice of a new motor at £110 or a second hand one at £45 I am likely to get more jobs completed, as the £110 item is usually rejected in favour of a new machine. I do give a guarantee but obviously don’t always have a replacement used part if the first one fails. In such cases I would offer the customer the choice of a brand new part for just the difference between its cost price and what I charged for the used part; or money back but I keep the machine. In the second case I may hold on to the machine until another seconhand part turns up. In my experience, parts that have worked OK for a few years in one machine will go on to work OK for a few more years in another.
