    Re: Silicon sealant

Dow Corning RTV silicone for most jobs. I often put a bit round the new seal when doing drum bearings and I use it with the original tub seal rather than renew the tub seal.

Re: Amusing Anecdotes & Other Tales

For one job yesterday the customer told me she would be out but her son would be there to let me in. When I got there I found a note on the front door step:

“washing machine man key for Back door In frat door plant pot please take It and open the slide doois at back!.”

I suppose the kid must have hoped any burglars would be illiterate. 😆

My advice would be to avoid integrated appliances but then I have a vested interest as they are often a nightmare for repairers. My record to date was 75 minutes to change a washing machine inlet hose 😯

    Re: Creda/WM type no spin.

I draw a diagram of what plug goes where, wire colours etc but still manage to do things wrong sometimes. A couple of weeks ago I had to send a WMA board to EMW twice as it was still not right after their first attempt. On the final visit I had a friend with me so was keen to get the job out of the way. I had left the day free for my visitor from England but felt obliged to do this one as it had now been ongoing for about 10 days. There was a 2 way plug and 2 individual spade wires going into a similar 2 way socket. Unfortunately these 2 pairs of wires were of identical colour combinations so I managed to put the spades in the wrong 2 way socket etc. I had drawn a square on my sketch to indicate the 2 way plug but I think I must have just put them where they looked like they should go! Fortunately no damage was done and the machine worked OK when I swapped them back. 😳

    Re: PCB Repairs

One point to remember is that there is not normally any guarantee with a new module if fitted by anyone other than the manufacturers engineer / subcontractor. The repair firms will generally repair the board again free of charge if it fails within a given period.

Thanks Dave, I have now ordered a new element plus 2 additional heaters from the local branch of Holland House.

Might be a silly question but can’t you just drill the hole bigger?

Re: Module/Timer repairers not playing fair?

When I subcontract repairs in this way I add about £5 to cover my postage charges but I don’t attempt to make a profit out of these timers/modules. As far as I’m concerned the customer is simply paying me for the work I do and the subcontract firm for the work they do.

It is worth keeping a set of different coloured buttons for these as the retaining tag can break off when you are trying to disengage it.

Or would they be better with a toploader? Perhaps keep a twintub somewhere for doing the daughters clothes.

Thanks John. As you will appreciate, my initial post was intended to praise Homespare but it now seems this praise was justified anyway. 😀

Re: Whats the most annoying thing customers do?

For a lot of repairs the soap drawer has to come out and I usually leave it on the draining board or in the sink. So many times the customer says “Oh, I didn’t know that came out!” and proceeds to clean said soap drawer in the most time consuming manner possible. In the meantime, I have changed the timer or whatever and am twiddling my thumbs waiting to put the drawer back so I can try out the machine. 🙄

    Re: Hotpoint WD860 Motor Whine

These machines do have a new design of motor so it will sound different to your previous machine. I would suggest you go back to the shop where you bought it and ask if you could listen to a showroom display model to see if it sounds the same. You may need to take a pile of dry towels to use as a dummy load.

    Re: ZANUSSI FL1082

When these get noisy it is usually drum bearing failure. When the play in the drum gets bad enough the drum pully wobbles about enough to throw off the belt. If you hold the inner edge of the door seal with one hand and grasp the outer edge of the stainless steel drum with the other hand you can check for up and down play between the two. If there is play evident or the drum does not turn smoothly it will confirm bearing failure.
