    Re: brother microwave capacitor

I have a service manual for the MFG1400 combi microwave. It gives the part number of the capacitor as 235472001. It gives their phone number as 0161 931 2258

In a case like that I would not mention a second callout charge on the invoice but would make sure it was covered in my margin on the dispenser price.

    Re: Skype

My father emailed me about this but I’ve not got round to doing the huge download yet. We tried the audio facility on MSN Messanger but it was fairly useless. Even wearing headphones to stop the feedback you hear your own voice with a time delay. Is Skype better then?

The Homespare book lists part No. 4295 which is just the elements without the framework but this does not seem to be on the website.

Sounds about par for the course. I had a Hotpoint that left the factory with the front drum bearing missing and I’ve seen quite a few with a handful of assorted nuts, bolts, washers etc rolling around in the base.

Has your hose still got the rubber cuff on the end? For some reason I have never ben able to fathom, lots of people cut this cuff off, making it difficult to fit the hose over anything else. If it is still attached you can buy a connector such as Electruepart PLM2054 to join on an extra hose. You can also get extra long hoses to replace the existing but obviously the end that fits the machine has to match the existing one for size and angle.

If you are talking about AC voltages, live & neutral might make more sense. 😉

Re: vauxhall astra van or estate 1.7 td year 2000

I had a Mk2 Astra I.6 diesel which went well when it did run but that developed a warped head at one point. I took the head to the local engine recon. place where they told me they were doing these engines all the time for the minicabs, which were mostly Cavaliers at the time. They said it was a petrol engine that GM had bodged into a diesel version.

Re: What do you love about this job ?

I have made more friends doing this work than I ever did in the factories and labs where I worked before I came to Scotland. When I started this business in January 1998 my only experience with whitegoods was repairing twintubs and spin dryers for the family and neighbours 20 odd years earlier! Like others have said, I was always a tinkerer though and knew that I should be able to pick it up as I went along without too much trouble. I do it because it enables me to live in a nice part of Britain. The work I did before in the aircraft industry was highly specialised so I’m never likely to find any demand for my expertise.

My answering machine does 1471 after every call it answers, regardless of whether a message is left. One day I had a call from someone on telephone number 0000000000. 😯

    Spoke too soon….

…. The springs arrived, together with an invoice by separate mail. The invoice does include the £5 handling charge. The email confirmation of the order does not show this handling charge. Sneaky or what?

If it’s that long I would guess it’s to renew the one from stat to the ring. Perhaps they burn out, like some tumble drier stat wires.

    Re: Unsuccessful Repairs

Chatting to a colleague who sells secondhand spares, it seems my customer bought a motor from him and fitted it himself so the machine is now up and running. As with Andy, I don’t charge at all if I make a wrong diagnosis but once or twice I have walked away from a job rather than order an expensive part that I am not certain will cure the fault.

    Re: Unsuccessful Repairs

It’s not so bad when you have fitted new parts as you can take them out again and use them on another job (hopefully). In this case I have had the repair done on the customers board so I can’t put the machine back how I found it and just charge a minimum call-out.
