ParticipantRe: Seme delivery times
I think with Connect they sometimes find the parts bin is bare despite the computer saying they have stock. This happened to me when I ordered a pack of coax plugs for a new house wiring job. I would not have ordered them if it had said out of stock but in the event they turned up in an order about 6 weeks later. At least they were easy enough to source locally so the job was not delayed.

ParticipantRe: Dyson Motors
Thanks Tony. They are such a pain to work on I didn’t want to end up doing the job twice. 🙂

I don’t supose they will be that happy about paying for parts that don’t cure the fault 😉

ParticipantRe: Seme delivery times
I am not sure how you would lose jobs because the parts were delayed. This happens to me all the time because I’m often not at home to take delivery of parcels and the next day delivery firms take between 2 and 6 days to get stuff to me. I can’t say I’ve ever had a customer give up on me and call in someone else. They may have a good moan but that’s as far as it goes.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint TDL60 Tumble Drier
Can’t you get BG to buy you a service manual for the machine? At least the customer can still use the drier in the meantime.

ParticipantRe: Ikea Fan Element
Thanks gents, Masterpart don’t even show a price on that one so it can’t be that popular. I measured the old element and I think it is close to an Electruepart ELE4535 so I will try one of those. I know I could just pass on the rip-off price of a genuine element to my customer but they have already had a raw deal on this oven as it is only 18 months old.

I take it you can’t sleep then ❓

ParticipantRe: New Hotpoint/Creda door seal bands
I’ve not been impressed with any of the devices used on the front of Hotpoint door seals although none are as bad as the whirlpool wire which I find a nightmare to put back on. I don’t know why they cant all use the Zanussi type plastic ratchet rings which are a doddle to get on and off. Obviously the Zanussi inside spring retainer is another matter entirely 👿

ParticipantRe: The older it is the higher the price!
And there’s me thinking the high spares pricing policy for older parts was based solely on the manufacturers desire for you to throw away the machine and buy the latest model 😉

ParticipantRe: Lec Door Seal
Thanks Dave, I thought that must be the case so I quoted for a door but the customer declined.

ParticipantRe: Who designs Whitegoods ?
I wondered the same the other day when I saw a Blomberg machine with a comprehensively blown module. The door interlock was located directly under the soap drawer and the machine had simply leaked suds from the drawer due to too much detergent. This was a two year old machine and was probably quite an expensive model but has now gone to the tip.

ParticipantRe: SPARES ACCOUNTS
I was at a trade electrical shop this morning, looking for a special light fitting. While I was there a customer came to collect a fan oven element they had ordered for him. They actually itemised the carriage charge they paid themselves on the bill they wrote out for their customer. Perhaps this is the way to go, tell customers they can pay a few pounds extra and get the part ordered on its own or just add their part to a regular weekly order in which case they might wait longer.

ParticipantRe: Do you prefer electronic timers?
When I bought my first automatic it was a Servis Starlight, a push button computerised job. At the time I assumed they would all quickly go to solid state but this has only happened quite slowly. I’m sure it would be possible to design ultra reliable electronics for washing machines, even if they needed to be sealed like the various black boxes in modern cars. Sadly, the current offerings from the major manufacturers leave a lot to be desired so mechanical timers win by default.

Their carriage charge was only £2.99 though, which was less than most of the others. Is this still the same?

ParticipantRe: working in Vancouver
Having had a quick look at property prices, I don’t think I could afford to buy a place in NZ now. Even a building plot is about £70,000 although I know many people buy a ready made house and just plant it on a site. I will make further enquiries though.
