    Re: CDA Microwave

I managed to get the number for CDA this afternoon and got a price for the board. Apparently the model is actually CM4SS, although the sticker on the appliance calls that the stock code. I’ve got the go-ahead from the customer so I will order it tomorrow. Thanks anyway.

It can be dodgy though, giving prices off the top of your head. I quoted someone for a WMA Hotpoint bearing job today, assuming it would be the normal 1604473 kit. Of course, the last WMAs had the smaller and more expensive 1604600 kit and this machine turned out to be one of them. It looks like the price difference in the kits is not so great though now, 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} as opposed to 150{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} at one time. At least the smaller bearings are easier to remove so there will be a saving in time.

Yes, I had one where the whole alloy bearing housing broke off the back of the tub. They do rust in well. 🙁

    Re: Van signwriting

I’ve never gone down the “no call-out charge” route but at one time I advertised “Washing machine repairs from £20”. This might be an alternative to consider. The only times I don’t charge are if I decline a job because the outlay on spares is too risky. For example, I went to a 2 year old Whirlpool which appeared to have a faulty module. I was not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain it was the module though and the board was too expensive to take a gamble on ordering one that could probably not be returned.

Thanks for the link. I got some from the same supplier and have started sticking them on this afternoon. As practice, I started with the small ones on the back doors before attempting the side ones, which are about 4 feet long. I think I will leave the side ones until we either get a windless day or I can do them in a garage. It does not take much wind to make them quite unwieldy, once the backing paper is removed and you are trying to apply them.

Thanks Martin. Connect list that one as special order and I was unable to get the Masterpart site to load earlier but it works now and they have one 🙂

You can always fit a relay if you want to protect the board from overload. I thought they did have a higher voltage in the States as well as the 110 volts? 😕

You can get the individual boards but they are extremely expensive. Hopefully one day someone will start doing a board repair service on these.

It’s OK to do a 500 volt insulation test at the plug as that’s what you do when PAT testing a washing machine. For diagnosis purposes you are better disconnecting individual parts such as the motor and heater and using your megger on the particular part.

    Re: whirlpool AWM325 washing machine

Could be a problem with the ON/OFF switch. Sometimes you get burnt contacts which quickly get hot and go high resistance. The correct switch appears to be no longer available but it is sometimes possible, if the switch is a double pole type, to bypass the faulty pole and use it as a single pole switch. In such cases the switch should be wired so only the live is switched.
Another part to check is the mains filter/suppressor which connects to the mains cable where it enters the machine. Look at that for signs of overheating.
Also check for corrosion at the plug pins and try the machine in a different socket to eliminate the socket as a suspect.

Have you tried a normal 50 hertz pump? I would have thought it would just turn faster at 60 hertz.

I did wonder if it could be the solid state switch that they tend to use instead of a relay for switching pumps, valves etc. It is actually a simplified triac as it is merely an ON/OFF device whereas a triac can provide variable output for speed control etc. They sometimes go short circuit on the Zanussi boards, causing the drain or recirculating pump to run continuously.

The wires to a shaded pole motor can go either way round. The polarity reverses 50 times a second anyway.

Water pump pliers are just the right shape for levering out seals. You hook one of the jaws into the seal and tap the end of the handle with a rubber hammer.

    Re: Business plan???

I would agree with the previous comments. Our trade is one that you can start doing on a shoestring, with a cheap van and a basic set of tools plus the most common spares. I didn’t even have a van at first, I was using my old MGBGT sports car, with a trailer if I needed to move a machine. I did enquire about the Enterprise Allowance scheme but at the time they were not offering help for businesses within the service industries.
I’ve never gone into refrigeration as you do need more expensive equipment for re-gassing and I considered that it might be a risky investment if a big proportion of customers declined such repairs on cost grounds.
I’ve never had an overdraft or other business loan and have never made a business plan for this particular business, although I did do one for a garage door installation business I was planning when I lived in England.
