ParticipantRe: Hotpoint CTD00G Door Pin
Thanks for the tips, jj. I often do minor mods to overcome design shortcomings. Much more satisfying than simply screwing in a new naff part to replace the old naff part.

ParticipantRe: Bearings on a hpt wt721
If it has a metal pulley it is the same as an early WMA with the big bearings. If it has a plastic pulley it is the smaller bearing tub, same as the last WMAs and the WFs. The small shaft bearing kit is 1604600.

ParticipantRe: ukw parts price runner ?
I don’t think there’s any quick way to find the best price for a given order as you usually need to get a few different items to make up a minimum free delivery value. It would be useful though to find out if any suppliers hold stocks of a less common component. It would also be useful if UKW could get parts for us (for a fee) in cases where we don’t happen to have a trade account with a given supplier.

I’ve taken to dismantling the 2 part seals on WMA and WF Hotpoints and putting extra grease on the moving surfaces as they tend to be supplied almost or completely unlubricated. I did a top of the range Ariston machine this week and found the bearing cross was still full of machining swarf. There was no rust on the old bearings so I don’t thing the seal had failed. I suspect some of the swarf had got into them.

Thanks Martin. It starts every time with a screwdriver but I suppose it may be that the switch has moved back a bit, preventing the pin from always reaching it.

If there is any front to back play in the inner drum you might be able to put a washer behind the pulley to pull it back a bit.

I got a boiler suit in Lidl this week. Not bad quality and for once the 44″ is long enough for me. Only criticism is the holes to access your trouser pockets are too small for my oversize hands.

ParticipantRe: Bearing Shell Removal Tool – Now Available
Yes, perhaps not the best time to be investing in new bearing removal kit. On the other hand, I’m always telling my customers to hang onto their WM series Hotpoint or Zanussi Unicycle for as long as possible as their next machine will likely be of inferior quality.

I think I would lose interest the instant the £5000 was mentioned 😆

ParticipantRe: Bearing Shell Removal Tool – Now Available
I always smear a drop of oil on the new bearings to make them go in easier. On the few machines where I’ve changed bearings twice it also makes the job much easier the second time round, a few years down the line.

ParticipantRe: Yell.Com
I think the point about older customers using traditional ways of finding an engineer is significant. Even those who own a PC are often not that confident about surfing the internet. I also suspect that internet activity is generally less up here in Scotland. Those of you who spend much time looking at Ebay items will perhaps have noticed that there are relatively few sellers in Scotland. This could reflect a more conservative attitude to selling/buying where people prefer to go to shops for things and look in the local paper for tradesmen.

I didn’t realise Qualtex still sell the armatures. I don’t have an account with them though so could they be ordered through UKW?

With Whirlpool if the spider is damaged the machine is probably scrap in any case.
