what make, model is your trusty servant..this could have a bearing on any answers and decisions… have you been satisfied with the performance over the years? this might influence your choice of the replacement if it comes to that. and what is wrong with your exsisting one? more info please.

if you can get the drain hose into a bucket or bowl drain as much water as you can by gravity. UN PLUG machine on its left side, towel under drain pump and take it off to see if there is an obstuction in ther, rice, piece of glass which is stopping the inpeller rotating

ParticipantRe: No spin
looks like a module fault…EMW do replacement module, fully guaranteed for 12 months,,,take module off no need to disconnect ANY wiring and examine it closely..any sign of scorched or burnt tracking confirms the fault. EMW…01159652118. keep your original module or take notes or diagram of block connections and replace one for one.

ParticipantRe: Soap filling up outlet pipe
is the outlet pipe connected to the u-bend under the sink? if it is the long soapy thing is a mix of fat and food waste from the sink! 😉
is very unlikely that the stuff is coming from the washing machine. if the drain hose is connected to the u-bend make sure the plastic spigot (where the drain hose is attatched to the u-bend) is vertically upright.

ParticipantRe: refund for book
if you have all the copies of your e-mails, proof of payment, letters, dates of your phone calls and any names who you spoke to you might consider a claim in the small claims court…just e-mail them once more, phone once more GET A NAME IF YOU CAN.. explain again and give them 10 days to resolve the situation.if no joy go to local magistates court and get a claim form and bang it in. this proceedure has worked for me when a customer refuses to pay an invoice..it does take a while but if the examining adjudicator rules in your favour you get your £70 plus any court fees you have incurred.

ParticipantRe: Awkward Situation
bryan ..a tricky situation as you say, re previous repair replacing the end cap…did you leave him a receipt for the job itemising the part/s used. as we know the end cap replacement is not related to the armature. funkyboogie has it right an unreasonable customer is an unwanted one. fortunately as you observe they are few but they are always a hazard and a pain and will be a nagging pain every time you get a call from them.
be honest and firm as to how you see your responsibilites. don’t let him wind you up. best of luck
