ParticipantI have now retired but I did a repair a few years ago free of charge with a shocking result a few hours later.
The repair I was called to was for an old Lady with an old under work top fridge near where I live.
The call only took me less than 10 minutes as the fridge was in a poor condition due to its age ( approximately 20 years old )
the compressor was also seized so I advised it was beyond economical repair. The living conditions of the Old Lady was poor and it looked like she was struggling to make ends meet.
She asked me how much she owed as I said it was a £70 Call out when she had phoned and I had told her the call out covered all the Labour but parts additional.
I said as I had to pass her house and had only had to diagnose the fault and it was not worth repairing the call was free of charge.
A couple of hours later I had a call from the lady’s daughter and she was very angry saying I had upset her Mother.
I asked how I had upset her and she said she was a proud woman and was upset I would not except payment and she was sending me a cheque for £70 in the post, and she would not be recommending me to anyone as I had upset her elderly Mother.
I advised her as I was passing, and the fridge was not worth repairing, and she could get a new fridge for less than a repair would cost so I waved my call out, but she would have none of it and said a cheques in the post and slammed the phone down.
I thought I was doing a kind deed but never ever done a free of charge call after.
I only used to reduce my call out to half price if the customer was elderly with a none repairable appliance.
Good luck to the plumber but lets hope he doesn’t come across a customer like mine or gets taken advantage of for his Kindness.

ParticipantIf it tripped again later it sounds like it could be the defrost or drain heater. Bob

ParticipantIf you work from home then I would say it’s more trouble than it’s worth to sell the business as if the person is no good you could get people turning up at your front door.
I retired 2 and a half years ago and just closed the business as it would be unfair to all your loyal customers if you passed them on to someone not up to your standard.
Another thing it would be hard to find an engineer willing to give up there job if they have no experience working for themselves.
If you still decide to sell I would approach one of the work providers to see if they wanted to buy the name and website so your work would be directed to them.

ParticipantIt’s something I think manufacturers should take on board but none of them even the high end manufacturers don’t cover the food.
As you say Dave they should have a responsibility for the food as if they appliance fails it’s not fit for purpose.
So there should be some accountability I have only found a couple of customers that have had some luck with the supplier but there is nothing that makes them responsible for the food.
The payments always are a good will gesture and at there discretion.

ParticipantI have never known any manufacturer cover food lost due to the failure of a fridge freezer. The only thing covered is the fridge itself.
The only time food is covered is with extended warranty but in general they are not good value for money as appliance failure is low for the amount sold.
You could contact the customer service department of the supplier and tell them nicely how disappointing there service was and how disappointed you were with the fridge freezer you purchased and tell them you would not recommend them to your wide group of friends or family.
i have known a few customers have had success as in general they like to keep customers happy.
i would advise you not to publish anything on social media as this can lead to big problems for you unless you are saying anything good about the company.
it always pays to go down the pleasant route and then you get them on your side and sometimes get results.
i would not stock up you freezer fully for a couple of weeks to check the repair was successful and there are no refrigerant leaks.
Good luck

ParticipantIf the motors running it has lost the refrigerant or the compressor has failed not a job you can sort yourself.

ParticipantIt depends on what terminals you checked as it stays live on 1 terminal for the light.
if both fan and compressor not working it should be the stat faulty.February 19, 2019 at 3:59 pm in reply to: Schreiber / Hygena APM 6321 integrated larder fridge #460560SAMURI
ParticipantCheck to see if the fan is running. If it is not running and you cannot hear the compressor then it will be the thermostat.
SAMURI
ParticipantIf it builds up that quick air is getting into the freezer somewhere. If the door seals are ok check the drain NRV at the back has not fallen off.
SAMURI
ParticipantIt could be a number of things but the most likely problem is there could be more ice still behind the panel in the freezer or the fan may not be working.
try a 48 hour defrost with the doors open.SAMURI
ParticipantIt can be a number of things but the most common problem on a APM6855 with not defrosting was the defrost sensor. Rare to get any problems other than defrost sensors or fan motors on this model.

ParticipantCorrect they should not sell it unless you are on the F Gas or Refcom register
SAMURI
ParticipantSame gas same rules. R134a is R134a in any system that uses it.
