yes i agree with how some customers are complete arses but looking at it from another angle it probably derives from the fact that most salespeople fail to emit important information and mislead customers on other facts, not small white lies but big fat ones after being in business for 10 years or so when i now meet a salesperson i presume their going to talk bull**it, how many times iv had to take out contracts ie. credit card terminal, phone lines, mobile, broadband especially BT now just take the pi**, every time the bill is higher and agreements seem to be worth nothing, its not local businesses that are the cheats in general its the big corporate’s and they get away with operating in this manor as well, billing systems seem to be designed to confused…

ParticipantRe: Nice one Dom
i read not long ago that 7 day cooling off period : most services i thought were exempt from this for common sense?, ie ordering a taxi etc.. and anyhow some customers are plainly nuts,
my last job today a guy said he would like his door handle changed from the front without me pulling out the machine(the door was locked shut with a broken handle)
i explained it would make my life easier to just pull out the machine and pop the catch from the back instead of string etc, he was having none of it! so as a joke i said i would bring magician back tomorrow to change the handle from the front as i was returning with the correct part then anyway, he actually agreed? he seriously thought i meant it? and asked what time were we both coming…simonb

ParticipantRe: The eBay revolution
was that 61 websites selling spares!! blimey, why so many? and spot on about ebay, i know its a slap in the face but remember its not just our trade that’s effected everything now on ebay and amazon is at close to trade prices or less in some cases, also iv noticed their is quiet a lot of second hand parts now, my apprentice smashed a customers cooker door and the glass was out of production, i was very lucky a firm was breaking old cookers and saved my arse and got a full door for 15quid! if a part is out of stock with the suppliers i order it from ebay…. at least for what we have lost we can get something back out of the system somehow….

ParticipantRe: Dangerous part ll
that’s an interesting point Lee about proving responsibility, and thanks for the links Martin i will be taking a good look, you learn something every day i was always under the impression PAT test was as good as mandatory and results had to be recorded for inspection, iv learnt over the years to always test for a good earth as always one a month with no earth wire and the cabinet is live, some right clever installers around, and that reminds me, a friend of mine was having some plastering work done in this house and the electrician from the council called and taped up the wires once or twice round only! and left them like that for 2 weeks, when i called it caught my eye and his youngest child has already started to peeled off some of the tape, yes it was defo live as i tested it, and just by chance i was present when he returned, i asked him did he think that was safe and who would be liable if someone was hurt, he said it was company practice and the company would be and who ever peeled it was an idiot, so i told him bollo@@s.. that really got my back up for a qualified electrician to have complete disregard for safety, part p? load of bollo@@s they should have a test for common sense first….

ParticipantRe: Dangerous part ll
now that’s just opened a can of wiggly worms! even though their is no requirement for PAT testing would it be agreed that a competent person would do tests at the end of a repair? i agree with your later with regards to scrutiny, the thing is here theirs different regs that require the repairer to comply that sort of overlap ie. electricity at work regs, health and safety, i’m no expert here but i was under the impression that the person working on an electrical appliance had to be ‘competent’ but no qualification was put in place as yet? and the IEE code of practice so that’s out the window in court? the health and safety executive would they not use this as ammunition? ok id be interested to know what the moral and legal view point would be if a repairer carried out a repair to an appliance lets say simply fitted a element and left and after a week or so the appliance caused some kind of harm? it was found it was not earthed, who’s at fault? the installer or the repairer?

ParticipantRe: Dangerous part ll
shocking, lol as a matter of interest i wonder how many engineers after repairing a built in oven especially high level double oven pull the oven out to check the mains input? also after removing the oven whats the procedure when the hard wired cable disappears into the wall and the engineer cannot check the cooker connection unit which should be to the rear of the oven? i can admit i have in the past done a quick “dirty” test from the cooker switch earthed screws to exposed metal parts of the oven to test for good earth continuity, although i know full well after the repair pat test must be done with visual inspection of wiring…..

ParticipantRe: Customer warranties on repairs
that reminds me of a job last week, customer on the phone playing hell that the hotpoint board has gone faulty again and was under warranty, proper ill mannered blaming customer, could not find the customers details on the pc anywhere but gave them the benefit of the doubt, anyway gets to job and turned out to be a different firm that did the job! what gets me here was even after calling out the wrong firm for the recall not one single sorry or embarrassment and even had the cheek to ask now that we were here would we just quickly do the job under the other repairers warranty!! seriously! ha ha some people have all the cheek in the world…..

ParticipantRe: Abestos in oven?
Blimey! that’s something that never occurred to me! my mothers friend recently died with Asbestos related due to exposure when her house was being renovated so i now how important that is, so an older looking oven i’m presuming its only an element change from the front is possible to play things safe then?

ParticipantRe: White Goods courses and trade advice please ?
above answers are good advice, i would like to add perseverance and patience is the key with this job, hey that does not stop after learning, every day a new fault or problem needs to be solved.
good background in plumbing is good as you have worked on tools 😉
electrical: safety! followed by understanding circuits and electrical components, ie. motors, pumps, valves etc as each appliance will have them.
1. off to college for the basic electrical part including pat testing.
2. work from home dismantling old appliances and becoming familiar with each component.
3. their are a few books around especially check your main library.
4. offer yourself free to a local repairer for work experience and shadow a competent engineer and ask plenty of questions.their are no formal qualifications needed at the moment like gas safe as long as you are competent which basically means you can work safe and leave the machine is a safe condition using the iee code of practice as a reference that can be bought from good book shops.
good luck and i hope you make it 😀
