I just read that guy’s (Paul Carrack) and he has had an interesting life. I remember Ace as being one of the bands we destroyed in 1976/7 but then he turns up with the undertones and the Smiths. that is crazy!

Not sure what you mean about Paul Carrick, but he is one of our best songwriters and performers, an all round Musician who by his long musical career has stood the test of time and written with many other worldclass musicians and tunesmiths !

    IMHO

    Re: Merloni Smart Card Readers

Not worth the bother, save your money ! Its a minefield, Connect will sell you the hardware key but try getting any of the smartcards and modules from them, no technical info either. After a week bug****** around with that lot its a quick phonecall to Tony at EMW next day module with you and job done !

Quick, Cheaper, its a no brainer

    Re: Numatic Henry prices

Funny we were just having this very same discussion on Friday afternoon.
We used to have a regular turnover of Numatic Henrys along with a healthy flow of associated service work. Now that everyone and their dog is selling Numatic and the fact that Numatic will not allow an even playing field I think that a lot of Indies will lose interest in the Numatic Products.

Go back to Homebase out of warranty and tell them that it won’t start ! they will be full of ideas how to get it working again. Numatic need to look after their entire customer base and it is indeed very shortsighted to throw all the goodwill of the independent trade away in favour of the sheds for whom knocking out a pot cleaner for £ 75.00 is a lost leader in the scheme of things. Once the indies no longer want to buy Numatic products and all the spares like contact sets, motors, bags and tools the loss may not balance with the quick buck !

Re: Integrated son of a b****

I would say that as Service Engineers that we should NEVER feel pressured into a situation where we have to be compromised. I managed 9/10 to reinstall a built in appliance without any material challenges, that said I am not about to become a whipping boy for some careless kitchen fitters errors who has left a with a large chunk of the customers money and then the customer expects some hapless Domestic Appliance Engineer to arrive and have to spend hours working around the cock ups left !

I never feel obligated to do something that I do not wish to do, and trying to lift dishwashers over surface mounted gas and water pipes, cables plastered into walls, quarry tiles preventing the appliance being removed, fill and drain hoses run behind units with no access to the stopcocks is not our responsibility as service engineers, we all want to be helpful and earn a living at this but you have to know when to draw a line !

Re: Integrated son of a b****

The thing is that like you say you can spend time effecting the repair and even more of your time trying to make good some one else’s bodge up !

On our terms of business we cover the subject to our advantage, which is that we are not kitchen fitters, we will try our best to refit intergrated appliances as they were, we shall not be liable for any form of carpentry work, any form of structural modifications i,e blocks of packing wood and the like, removing pipework/wiring or replacing the same that is not within the appliances specification, Removal of floor tiles or reftting them.

When we go to an intergrated appliance a quick survey will show if any of the above might apply and if they do then we simply advise the client to effect the removal of the appliance whereby we can repair it and they can then make good the re-installation.

    Re: Free Estimate.

It never ceases to amaze me how often this subject comes up within these forums and also the amount of times that a someone will call up asking for someone to come out to them for nothing !

We have never done free estimates period I just won’t hear of them, how in this day and age can we as a trade run around all day for nothing ??? it makes no sense to me. Sure there will always be someone operating in your area who does not mind running around for nothing but let them I say.
Most of the Free Estimate people in my service area come and go, mostly go due to the fact that are unable to make it pay over the longer term, some of them due to the fact that anything are than simple carbon changes etc are beyond their skill set.

Either way they do not affect our business and we always make a charge and have done for the last 20 years !

Re: When is salt NOT salt?

Salt is Salt, Except in the case of Dishwasher salt, When I was training we had extensive training on such matters of how and why you require a ION Exchanger/monobloc in the first place. Nowdays customers and some engineers seem to be under the impression that 4 and 5 in one tablets with salt are sufficient for a dishwasher which of course they are not. Table salt Cannot be used as its unsuitable for the process.

This is the generally accepted idea of what type of salt is required and why.

Dishwasher salt is a particular grade of crystalline sodium chloride intended for use in dishwashers. Dishwasher salt is used for the same purpose as (and is very similar to) water softener salt, namely to regenerate ion exchange resins used to remove the hardness ions calcium and magnesium from water. Dishwasher salt is in a granular form, with particles larger than common table salt and unlike table salt has no added iodine (included as a dietary supplement). The granule size ensures that the salt dissolves slowly and that fine particles do not block the softener unit.

Most customers are far more likely to use the correct salt after I explain why they should be using it in the first place and a little education goes a long way to show that not only do you have the necessary knowledge but that you are helpful and professional which makes them happy to pay you !

Re: Quality Tamperproof Torx/Security Torx bit sets

As Far as the Torx bolts on Hotpoint/Zanussi Spiders go I always drill the heads off with a decent drill bit, takes a minute and replace with new bolts. Like the Indesit/Ariston Rear Pulley Torx bolts that are retained with a dash of Adhesive, I use a sharp medium cold chisel to make a slot on the bolt, then gibe it one or two blows and it shifts which then allows removal with the right size torx bit.
