    Re: Krups XP524040/1P0 Espresso machine

Thanks both. Krups were unhelpful, saying they only supply parts to account holders (for safety reasons) and recommending I contact their service agent for repaur. The service agent was willing to supply parts, but advised me to ask Krups for the part numbers, as they had no parts information. Catch 22!

I have put in a part number enquiry to Connect, and will contact Belstar and Wesco, another supplier I found on Google.

I went back today and sliced a piece off the old heater’s bung and slipped it under the new heater’s bung. It tightened up fine so I can now sleep easily.

I’ve no experience of the Berlingo, but have you tested the blower fuse and tested the continuity of the circuit to earth?

    Re: City & Guilds 2359.

One way to look at the qualities of a good appliance repairer might be to weight the attributes needed. This could look something like:

    the right attitude (25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}),
    technical aptitudes (25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}),
    relevant knowledge (15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}) and
    experience on the job (35{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}).

Without the right attitude and aptitudes, no amount of training or experience will make a good engineer. That is probably what Ken is banging on about.

However, if the attitude and aptitudes are right, the individual will make it their business to pick up the knowledge and experience needed to become a good engineer.

So a qualification can make a good repairer better, but obtaining a qualification does not automatically create an effective repairer.

    Re: Daewoo problem

Clearly you can’t solve this yourself, so explain the situation to your customer (that you can’t obtain a replacement) and refer them back to Daewoo. This is presumably a Daewoo guarantee or goodwill issue and if you are not a Daewoo agent it’s Daewoo’s responsibility to resolve not yours.

    Re: Indesit washing machine explodes

I heard somewhere (possibly the Watchdog programme) the problem is associated with a new drum jointing method, where instead of the heavily crimped longitudinal joint used previously (with chunky ribbed appearance), a simple folded joint was introduced, similar to that used on traditional steel food cans (with a much smoother finish), which was considerably weaker. Exactly what they have done to rectify the problem remains a mystery.

The recall notice for exploding washing machines on the Hotpoint website seems to have been replaced by the dishwasher one – itself rather obscure. They really don’t seem to want people to find out about these recalls.

It’d be through the edo-design legislation, Martin, that has, among other things, already seen the demise of less efficient fridges and, I have a feeling, American top loaders.

I’m no oven expert, but since the carcase is combustible, could there be a potential for the carcase to catch fire if the oven’s cooling fan or cooling thermostat failed?

It may be worth asking him to produce paperwork showing the work done by the other trader – so you can verify he is telling the truth and find out what went wrong. A leak at the inlet hose, for example, might flood the floor while the dishwasher was still switched off, before the anti-flood switch had a chance to operate.

Retail Merchant Services Ltd don’t seem to have anything to do with Streamline, so they may be more competitive, Martin. According to their website they were set up in 2007 and have only around 27,000 customers.

To reduce mobile reception problems, I have a roaming SIM card in my terminal that connects to any of the 4 main mobile networks – an extra £2 per month rental from 123 Send compared with the Vodafone only SIM I had before.

I replaced a wiring loom on an old Hygena (Brandt) dishwasher this afternoon, and the customer’s wife said they should report the failure to the manufacturer as the wiring should have stood up to wear and tear, whatever its age (16 years). I did point out that MFI went into administration 4 years ago.

    Re: Hotpoint washer dryer problem.

There are two options knobs to the right of the programme selector knob – wash temperature (cold, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 90) and dryness level (off, cupboard, hanger, iron, 180, 150, 90, 40). Could she be confusing the two knobs? Maybe she has set the wash temperature to cold and drying time to 40?

Modern machines are not that intuitive to many users. It’s surprising how many people think the wash temperature knob controls the drying heat, for example.
