    Re: Hotpoint washer dryer problem.

What model is it? Surely the user manual would clarify? The knobs are shoddy on late Hotpoints – could it be damaged? I have seen two selector knobs fail at just over a year.

Their terms and conditions are a complete mess and contain some highly dubious clauses. Eg, no reduction in fixed repair fee if appliance deemed BER, unless customer buys a new machine from ServiceNet. 12 month warranty covers labour but not parts, etc.

Have you noticed there are quite a few nearly new washing machines being recycled, including a Samsung Ecobubble (front left), a large capacity Miele (middle bank, 4th from left), Hotpoint Futura (rear bank, 2nd from left). Evidence of the throw away society, I suppose.

    Re: trade qualifications ?

I think Ken’s analysis is spot on, although, in reality most engineers fit somewhere on a continuum between Type A and Type B.

I shared a kitchen once with one of our local gas boiler engineers and was surprised to witness him trying to repair an electrical fault on the system without any kind of test meter. After trying a new thermostat and then a new pcb, he appeared completely stumped. He confided in me he disliked fault finding and preferred routine servicing, but this was one of his regular customers.

So much for compulsory training and Gas Safe registration! And of course every boiler is supplied with a service manual and wiring diagram!

A few snippets of information from the public domain:

GLG Marketing Ltd was incorporated on 19 March 2013. Their registered address of 88-90 Hatton Gardens is a “virtual” mail forwarding address.

The sole director is Lauren Heron, aged 25, around one year younger than Daniel Waterhouse, director of Golocal Repairs Ltd. It may be purely coincidental, but a Lauren Heron and a Daniel Waterhouse share the same SS2 Southend postal district. This could further strengthen suspicion that Daniel Waterhouse has some involvement with this new company.

Not forgetting the other stipulation of the Sale of Goods Act that goods must be of “satisfactory quality”, but that’s opening up another can of worms, I fear.

This really is only about your record keeping systems. As long as you keep copies of all invoices in a neat and logical fashion you should have nothing to fear.

    Re: advice required

I think you are entering dangerous territory by trying to defend the claim yourself. My advice would be to pass the letter to your public liability insurer, and outline the points you raise in your covering letter to them.

You will probably find your insurance policy requires you to notify them of any claim and not to enter into correspondence with a third party. If you ignore this, you risk invalidating your insurance cover. Insurers are well used to defending claims and will know how the law applies in this case.

The lesson I learned was not to visit the customer at 4:45. When I rang the insurer for authorisation at 4:55, they had already switched their phones through to their out of hours answering service, who didn’t have a clue what I was ringing about.

After the customer had spoken to the insurer the next day, she asked me to return and complete the repair, at her cost. My total income for the job was the same, but I had to make an extra journey.

    Re: hotpoint recall 70,000 dishwasher

They’ve only recalled dishwashers with these boards manufactured from June 2006 to March 2007. As far as I can make out all the dishwashers using these boards apart from FDW20, FDW60 and FDW65 were either discontinued before June 2006 or had switched over to the new smart card enabled pcbs.

Re: whirlpool semi intergrated slimeline d/w year of manufac

It seems early versions of this dishwasher sold under the Philips-Whirlpool brand, so around 20 years is possible.

A quick Google search identifies a Miele slimline semi-integrated dishwasher, G4501SCI, apparently still available.

    Re: Posh Plumbers

I know this is an old thread, but after seeing an appearance of the boss of Pimlico Plumbers on Channel 4’s Thatcher tribute programme, I thought I’d take a quick look at their website to see if anything had changed.

I noticed they now do appliance repairs, and their charges interested me – £80+VAT per hour during normal working hours, rising to £200+VAT per hour in the early hours. Minimum charge of one hour, additional time charged in quarter hour increments. Fixed charge of £80+VAT to dispose of an old appliance.

These rates seem high to me, but I guess there are many rich people in Central London who wouldn’t mind paying?

    Re: Magno calc thingy

On the contrary, Martin, the article cites several scientific studies showing it reduces the effective hardness of the water by changing the way the limescale crystallises and deposits on surfaces and by keeping it in suspension.

So these devices don’t eradicate limescale, but can reduce the impact of it. So, for example, limescale forming on taps can be more easily wiped away. Whether they will protect heating elements from damage is a moot point.

But be assured, I wouldn’t buy one myself. I am sure they are far less effective than good old fashioned Calgon (or other brands of laundry descaler available).

    Re: Magno calc thingy

“Magnetic water treatment” in Wikipedia gives useful overview. It seems there may be some effect on limescale deposits, but not well understood scientifically.

    Re: Magno calc thingy

You’re presumably talking about some kind of accessory rather than part of the equipment itself?
