Re: Advice needed on small residential home for disabled

It is very good and clear. Wish I had known ages ago so that I would never set a foot in that place.

Re: Advice needed on small residential home for disabled

    Thanks Ken,

It was interesting to note that very few people are aware of this regulations concerning dump valve and WRAS approved appliances and I think the reason for this that no one knows what it was meant to look like nor even the retailer who I buys my machines from them as trade has never come across it. They admit that they have supplied appliances to similar properties.

Like you said that I am the ‘expert’ and would have been in the position to supply and install the appliance which will make me liable for falling foul to the regulations. As for retailers, they just supply the machine and hands off so how were they meant to know the type of property and the nature of using the machine? Will they get into trouble for facilitating the machine or being held liable for providing the machine that deemed unsuitable for them when they could make it clear that such appliances are not suitable for such environment?

Perhaps a type of poster on the side saying “Domestic appliances for domestic only and does not include … care homes, vets, hairdressers, catering,,, blah blah.” Perhaps the public or even managers of such settings would be indirectly educated and take the commercial route?

Perhaps it is more common than we thought and people have not realised it? Where the line will be drawn? Elderly couple who’s other half is disabled and bed wetter in their own private home, does this rules applies to them? People who calls us for repair don’t tell us what kind of environment the appliance is set in, and sometimes you will find it would be a wasted trip which could have been avoided?

There’s so much you can do over the phone without asking too many questions as one would want to get the first impression right.

Thanks for the advice, I quickly got the hint and produced a letter to the care home. I explained the situation and the nature of the care home that they are best advised to go down the commercial route and gave them few websites printouts with phone numbers.

The trouble is that this particular care home did not recognise themselves as care home as the set up was a private arrangement and not under social services radar.

So I left it with them and hoped to have steered them to the right direction.

    Thanks guys,

I have found a few whirlpool commercial for around £600 upwards but I recalled few years ago that this machine didn’t last well (18 months from Costco) despite being used in an hairdresser with all those towels to wash 3 times a day.

I am researching the possibility getting the carers to consider renting commercial washer as it is more cost effective for them.

I never thought I would find it quite stressful on finding a suitable machine to suit their budget. Will let you know my findings.

Huh? Dump valve? Can you explain further please?

The law of averages applies to this case. It’s a little high but only by 5 cm.

I used Black and Decker bench with the legs trimmed by an angle grinder. Seems to work well. I can’t remember the height of it, I can measure it if you want to know.

Doing work via customer’s friend’s recommendation can add a little pressure as you would want to do it well, looks like you discovered that drum replacement job was more hassle than it worth.

I’d put it down to experience. I had one job that costed me a fortune which in hindsight it would have been cheaper to replace the machine.

These days I don’t bother do sealed drum replacement regardless of age of the machine. I tell them get a new machine and brand loyalty does not do them favours.

I’ve been always upfront with costs including callout charge and the minimum charge I expects to be paid.

There’s a danger on ordering parts without seeing the appliance and you learnt this one.

I think in my case one in ten Bosch machines have this problem. Pathetic init? I think you need to replace the brushes before it wears out to stop this happening. Maybe it should have a routine brush replacement after 2 or 3 years.

Re: Customer threatening to blacken my business on FB

Thanks for the wise advice. It was the first major complaint I ever had in 5 years. Sometimes it is good to reassess yourself and see if there are room for improvements. It is reassuring to know that none of you challenged my working practices which means that I must have done summat right there.

This customer didn’t get what she wanted so I think she used the opportunity to vent her frustration on to me after all it was probably her first time using someone like me outside the insurance and probably surprised how much it would cost to put it right. She were accusing me of trying to sell her a new dishwasher, there was some truth in it but I was merely pointing out that if she had enough of this dishwasher due to track record of unreliability then I may be in the position to offer her to replace the machine and start afresh. She was given two choices, repair or replace. Either way she probably not happy with paying over £100 for repair or over £300 for new dishwasher.

BTW I have not yet returned the charges, I am not admitting liability just to keep the peace, I will pop by when I am in the area which is probably on Friday evening when I take my sons swimming so she will have to wait…

    Nothing! Ignore, move on.

    (I trust you didn’t charge?)

Of course I did charge her but it was a reduced fee. Still that is going to bee refunded. No skin off my nose.

It is the reed contact switch. When I turned it on, no water came through then an error code of F6 came on.

I had to check it out and it dawned on me that I forgot to turn the tap on. There’s me worried then!

Glad it is all working well. Thanks for the help.

At the recent survey by WTA showed that being part of an accreditation scheme, it was felt that it brought no extra benefits for the business.

B’ham TS favours the Check-a-Trade scheme. Also there’s the trust mark scheme. The reality is that customers couldn’t careless. But this is off topic.

There is a danger if we are required to have DBS card as it would drive up costs and put us Indie at disadvantage.

    Re: WTA in the news

There were more this morning, people posting pictures of their old trusty appliances.

I’m sure I can beat this women of Hotpoint dishwasher of 20 odd years old. I attended a dishwasher job few years ago which was a Servis dishwasher in full working order and this one was 40 years old. I believe it is still in working order.

I’m sure we all have encountered appliances that are in great condition for its age that will trump those pictures on BBC news.
