Thanks for that Joe. Next question. Do you know of any diagrams for this model, where I can locate the clutch?

FURTHER UPDATE
Thought I’d post this, you never know, it may help someone else:
Had my regular guy round to hopefully fix my dryer. He wasn’t familiar with the noise, nor recognised the bits it had ‘coughed out’, so he took it apart to see what it could be. 💡 Came to the conclusion that something (possibly from someone’s pocket) had got past the filter and had made it’s way into the fan. He could hear it catching as the dryer changed direction. Anyway as it’s an old machine, we agreed that it wasn’t worth the time + effort (=money!!) dis-assembling what appeared to be a hefty sealed unit, so suggested that I let it run in the hope it would eventually spit out the bits and clear itself. I was worried that it’d blow up, but he said the worst that would happen is that it would sieze up and cut out. As I said before, it was an old machine and would probably be more economically viable to replace.
Anyway after about half an hour of drying, it did clear and it’s now working perfectly.
The best thing, my guy refused to charge me!!!! When I insisted he at least take something for his time, he just said keep recommending him to friends, as I have done several times already.
What a lovely guy. 😀

To Penguin45,
Our American colleagues over on ApplianceJunk.com reckon it’s the motor.
Repair-man wrote:Tell him to bring a “large American motor” with him
Just wanted to say thanks. From your response above, I followed up your lead with the guy on ApplianceJunk.com. As he was more familiar with my machine, coming from the same side of the pond, I gave him a few more details, now he seems to think it’s just a broken belt.Really helpful, numbers, diagrams and everything. Without you, wouldn’t have found him.
Thanks again,
Sharon

Thanks Cockey Steve,
The “whirrs briefly” intrigues me…..any drum-movement with this?
“briefly”-please define….1 second? 10? 2 minutes?
Sorry, been a bit too vague. When I say ‘whirrs’ it’s the usual noise it make as it starts. No drum movement. How brief? Just the one second.
Hopefully these details will enable you to make a nice cheap diagnosis – if only!!!
Thanks again, would appreciate your, and anybody elses thoughts.

Thanks guys.
Fluff build-up, yeah that would be nice, sounds cheap! The flipside, a new motor, sounds expensive. Any ideas of costs if it does turn out to be the motor?

ParticipantRe: Beeping noise DWF 416
Hi, back again!!
Drained out the bottom tray as advised and put it through a short cycle. All worked fine (no beeping or flashing) until it drained, when it shorted the electricity and found that water had drained into the tray again.
Where do I go from here?
Many thanks,
Sharon

Hi, thanks for your response.
Going to ask my husband to attempt to drain it. Any instructions on how to go about it?
Thanks, Sharon

ParticipantRe: Whirlpool Gold, American Collection – dusty residue left
Thanks you guys, problem now solved. Am now using a handwash powder and all is well, no talcy residue.
Have since found that Costco do a drum of washing powder (their own make) that is specifically for industrial machines and top loaders. I have done quite a few washes and it works great. Costco is geared at the American Market so I guess it’s no surprise that I found it there.
Thought I’d mention it because someone who answered my post said they couldn’t buy ‘top loader powder’ in the UK.
Once again, thanks for your help.

Hi, thanks for your response. I tend to use the 2 in 1 tablet type of detergent, not sure if I can mention names! Are these not suitable for my machine?
