thanks Martin , I know that modern machines are better as is soap if I think back to say the old 3236h rotted away or 1850 rusting to dust its obvious. materials improve all the time trouble is prices fall all the time and this seem to be the bench mark customer use to judge product.back in the late 80s my old boss was selling 1200 hoover 3786 GRADED for over £350 this weekend powerhouse was pushing beko £150. in this area selling up is tough work especially when all other gadgets dvd tv etc get cheaper and work fine. trouble starts when the customer pays what he thinks is more than basic and is then dissapointed by the results no matter what I say its me thats in the wrong

    all the best

    Re: Poor Wash Results

what is the customer to think? her old 95 worked well her new zanussi does not! no mention is made of her using different powders in different machines to her the new machine is a poorer design giving poorer results for the same input. I would think the same if I bought functional tool and it failed to give the results expected. Seems to me that “the poor bloody infantry” i.e. us that stand in front of the customers have to justify failings that we heve no say in “why does it take so long?” “it doesnt take enough water to rinse properly” etc etc sometimes its good to take a step back and think I ONLY FIX THEM I DONT MAKE THEM

Re: What makes door seal rubber turn to grey goo?

many years ago a man came into the workshop and asked if I could fit a hose to his hoover twin tub ok I said Ill see if Ive got one. No no he said HE would provide the hose and give me a couple of spare so I wasnt out of pocket. Turns out he worked in the factory that made them so he knew these were good ones. apparantly the day shift was well supervised and turned out good stock night shift cut corners and banged out high volume on peace work rate without quality control. I often wonder if this explains poor hoses.

    Re: diy’ers

We had a DIYer done his own bearing job on a WMA. Started by gaining access to the pulley with a hammer and chisel!!!!! He kept buying spares. We kept selling them. By the time he brought it in to us to sort out it had cost well over the price of the standard bearing job. Our helpfull advice was well ment and he now see that we were right. His advice to his friends and family is our advertising.
We get the job and spares sales!

Re: Electrical Safety & Legal Legislation

I always keep a record of the test results on the job card. But who should I look to for limits IEE HSE manufacturers they all seem to require different tests 500v 1000v 2Mohm 1Mohm high current earth bonding DC tests (not Clare)etc etc then theres earth loop impedance tests RCD tests.
Commom sence is best policy I think. Check earth bonding to below 1 ohm and insulation at better than 1 Mohm at 500v. Cookers and hard wired (dont start me on about those stupid new house builders that hard wire everything!) test for bonding to sink top or water pipe and as Tubs says insulation from exposed harness during the repair.
As for pieces of paper that say your some kind of electrical expert .How many of us have seen lids removed from machines to fit under low worktops leaving exposed wiring and fire hazards and this done by kitchen fitters that have passed a two day course and have this piece of paper.

I could go on but I better not Wilf

    Re: WMA bearing change

first dont think about replacing the bearings even with hotpoints tool kit its only possible half the time if your lucky. rear half tub is better option as if you try and fail you will curse the time wasted, try later on the old tub if you want. spider replacement is more tricky and I now always take off the paddles then get the bolts nice and hot and out they come( not a job for inside the customers house ) I fit new bolts from local engineering supplies plated M8x25mm c/sk allen keyed on, a fraction of hotpoints price.

ps watch out for some tubs coming with extra bolt fixing just below the soap dis cut it off or it will bang on the soap dis body the clip will fit next to this .
