ParticipantRe: Names
When I first read Martin’s last post I thought little of it. But on reflection, he is absolutely right.
Sibson will be the start for the TA coupled with the delegation of everyone’s role and to that end everything will become clearer. I have thought hard about the precious spare time I have with my 4 children – and the possibility of the TA using some of that up – but I am willing to input what I can for the greater good of this trade. (And the possibility that one of my sons may join me in a few years).
When Sean and Rob came to Poole for the detergent training session and the introduction of the new ISE – I was quite suprised at the disdain that certain people demonstrated with regard to their own industry. (and the ISE – “uhh, s’only a Beko…. hate their door boots – …….:rolls:) This was an extra line of business after all: at least someone is trying. There seemed a resistance to change and the feeling of “well, it pays the bills, don’t it” that this trade suffers from IMO. Hopefully the TA, through a sense of purpose and direction can steer the industry main players (manufacturers and WP’s) to reciprocate the good work that us indies do.
We are all individually respected within our customer base and area: but not in the media and the ‘choice of career path’ at the colleges in this country. I would be ashamed if I didn’t give my son and others like him a chance to make a good living from this trade by my lack of action. Machines aren’t going to fix themselves – they’re not getting any more reliable, so this trade has a future if it wishes to grasp the nettle and make it a good one. As Martin says, it will take time and effort from the few to help the many. Can it be achieved? Well, things need to change, don’t they? Now is the time for the trade to take this opportunity to unite as they have on UKW – this alone shows it can be done.Steve.

Engineer is the cheapest option IMHO.
The only thing you can test is continuity of the heater. (Power off; of course!!). If the heater tests OK, then click Repairs@ banner to book an approved engineer in your area.
That way you are going to know for sure with no risk to you – in the
unecessary purchase of probably useless spares or personal harm. 😉HTH,
Steve.

ParticipantRe: Another joke.
A Jewish woman says to her mother, “That’s it!! I’m going to divorce David – I’m sick of his ways.” Her mother is fond of her son – in – law so is understandably shocked.
“Why?” she asks. “Well David always demands a*al sex and my a*sehole is now the size of a 50p when it used to be the size of a 5p.”
Her mother says, “You have a big house, a Porsche, a grand – a – week allowance and 6 continental holidays a year – and you’re just going to throw that all away for 45 pence??:rotl:

If it’s filling, then a few minutes later it aborts the cycle, the heater may be faulty or not detected. Possibly broken thermistor wiring (even on the drier t’stor).
Now – you either go and buy all the bits you hope will fix it – or call someone who can put their finger on it straight away. You still have the option to say “No” to the repair. BUT – if you buy the parts – you are commited to keep them. Guesswork is expensive and dangerous. An engineer will just charge for what he fits to effect a repair.
No contest!! The hype about domestic appliance repair charges are largely just that – hype. (keeps Calgon in business though 😉 ). In this case, it is money well spent IMO.
Power off if you continue looking.Hope that helps,
Steve.

He couldn’t get any as the premises are 100yds from the Thames and the cost was prohibitive. Poor bloke has lost some stock as well. 🙁

ParticipantRe: Baumatic BDW13,not heating.
If you remove the plinth you can just squeeze your hand in underneath the heater terminals on the left and the stat is just behind it clipped to the underside of the drum. Pull the stat down in the clip slightly and slide it out. The wiring is just long enough to get the stat forward to unplug it.
I have had several of these stats fail. They have 2 sets of terminals and one pair will go O/C. The stat is readily available.Hope that helps,
Steve.

ParticipantRe: Gas work
This is where UKW and the new TA have to take the initiative forward as gas repairs (especially to cookers: both gas and dual fuel) are a huge ‘no man’s land’ waiting to be harvested. Since reading the UKW forums over the last 18 months, and seeing the fears raised by other members, I have turned away countless dual fuel cookers with fan elements blown. Not because I couldn’t do the job, but because the fall-out in the event of a problem is unthinkable.
That, in many ways, is the fault of CORGI. It has to be said that it is good that the gas industry is policed – but if the rules and requirements are disjointed when it comes to appliances (especially when no gas – tight connection has been broken), things have to change. Moreover, when its own members aren’t entirely sure of its OWN regulations. CORGI’s exclusivity suggests that everything in the rulebook should be fully comprehensive and cast in stone. 😉 And certainly no grey areas.
CORGI have to alter their position to be as inclusive as possible and not overtly exclusive in order to draw all repairers under its jurisdiction. The current exclusivity (coupled with extortionate qualifying fees) could make some repairers just think “Sod it, it’ll be alright” and that can’t be good for anyone. The customer is the one that suffers in the long run, ironically the very people these organisations are set up to protect.Steve.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WMA62 “child lock safe”.
Thanks Simon for the info. I only had a few minutes to spare to search, as I have been out working in the workshop all this evening. (just finished!) Usually I get mixed answers from the ‘Search’ feature; and as I needed a definate result, I thought I’d just write a quick post. Sorry, Jim! 😳
Thanks again,
Steve.
