ParticipantRe: Kitchenfitters tricks!
The worst bodge I ever had to deal with was a call for a leak on a Zanussi integrated washer drier. The kitchen was about 2 years old.
Removed the decor door and plinth; found that water had been leaking underneath for some time. Chipboard flooring was sodden. So I unscrewed and removed the top spacer piece; this is followed by a loud ‘crack’ noise. I then brace myself and tug the machine out of the cupboards about a foot. Much louder cracking noises and the machine falls back and down through the floor. 😯 😯 . It pulls me off balance: I let go and the machine is now laying back against the wall at a 45 degree angle…..the floor has collapsed underneath it. :eeek: :eeek:
The customer, like me, is mortified. Between us, we haul the machine out of the ‘hole’ and onto the tiled floor. A look behind the machine reveals the chipboard flooring was rotted through and was only held up at the back by 2 shelf brackets screwed to the skirting board. After removing the chipboard remains, it was found that the joists underneath had been sawn off and were hanging in space.
The customer then recalls a conversation with the kitchen fitter – “Your joists are rotted under the sink; I’ll sort that for you before we fit the machine in its place”.
So the stupid sod sawed the joists off, obviously forgot about what he was supposed to be doing, and just slapped in this piece of chipboard to cover the hole.
At some point it must have dawned on him to correct the oversight. Probably not. :rolls:
I repaired their dishwasher about a year or so later and the customer told me that the company no longer traded and attempts to contact them had failed. They had to have a large part of the floor rebuilt as 4 joist were at fault.
How can these people sleep at night??Steve.
P.S. 💡 UKW Christmas idea!! Kitchen fitter dartboards!! :innocent:

If you position the mouse pointer over the word ‘Recommended’, you will see a “speech bubble” with the words;
Quote:-
“Recommended means that this tradesperson has been recommended to us, but that they have not yet chosen to take part in our vetting procedure”.What the hell is the point in that? :hmm: It’s also misleading. How can they “recommend” a business they know nothing about? How can they police what goes on following their recommendation?
Sounds like another Checkatrade: but without the ‘check’. :rolls:Steve.

ParticipantRe: Bearing Replacement on Hotpoint WM31
Before going any further with the bearings, you have to establish what is throwing the RCD. Most likely candidate is a shorting motor armature – you will need an electrical insulation test meter to confirm this. The armature is still available as a separate part. (only as pattern). Hotpoint themselves only supply complete motors now. They are not cheap.
You now have to consider the viability of this job. How good is the rest of the machine? Is the drum shaft in excellent condition? How much has the machine been used in it’s life?
True, the WM31’s build quality was of a much higher standard than that of a new Hotpoint. (AKA Indesit).
BUT…. now you could need – bearings, drum shaft, motor armature and new brushes to effect a good long lasting repair. At the least you may be able to save the shaft: but it must be in perfect order – ie. no scratches, rust or score marks especially on the brass seal ferrule. If the bearings have broken up, replace the shaft. It is false economy no to.
Complete bearings can be drifted out with a hammer and solid bar – if they are broken up, a special tool is available to remove the outer race. (priced at £100 + , 8O).
Consider the above before buying ANY spares, or click ‘Repairs@’ on the homepage for an engineer in your area.Hope that helps!!!

ParticipantRe: Almost had it with Hotpoint Ultima 865
Unfortunately the quality of Hotpoint (AKA Indesit) machines has now sunk so low it can wave at the Titanic.
Nightmare99’s story is sadly not unique, and therefore there are surely other customers out there considering calling it a day at 6 months old. Frustration with a substandard product would make that stance perfectly understandable.
What doesn’t make sense is this impression that this is the ‘best washing machine and eco-friendly’. Not the experience of the people at the sharp end I’m afraid.
This is a shame because the humble Hotpoint of yesteryear could be said to be akin to the old Ford Escort – most people had owned one; they were basic; a bit workmanlike; but they were easy and cheap to fix and lasted long enough to satisfy most people they were good value for money. 😉 Most customers base their choice of a new machine on past experience – with an old Hotpoint that would usually have been favourable.
A machine that lasts under 2 years requiring numerous repairs and spares is neither eco-friendly or ‘best’ however you care to slice it.aqualectric

ParticipantRe: Hoover WDM 120-01 dryer timer?
It won’t be anything to do with the heater or stats – that would usually stop the heat more often than not. This machine runs a Crouzet timer and the drier control is geared to the main timer cam barrel. So if it is jamming the problem most likely lies there. It’s also fitted with the Remco 5038 computer module, but despite these PCB’s suffering from blown solder joints and burnt edge connectors, I don’t think that would particularly have any bearing on the drier timer. Would be worthwhile checking though. 😉
Sounds like the timer complete: – EMW look like they do both the timer and the PCB, Jim.
Just for reference:- Timer unit New = £58 + VAT. (New 5038 PCB £26 + VAT).Hope that helps,
Steve.

ParticipantRe: What we’ve got here…
The TA needs to be open to all in this industry, as everyone is going to approach the common cause from different perspectives. This will generate a larger pool of experience that will allow the TA to represent ALL forms of the domestic appliance industry from sole trader through to the large scale manufacturers.
We need to be an inclusive organisation; not an exclusive one, as DASA is. As was mentioned in an earlier post, the more members we have, the more clout we will have in the determination of our future.
Thanks, Ken for your efforts: so far so good……. 😉Steve.

ParticipantRe: Hotpoint WDM73 fill problem.
Is the “click” the correct or overfill level, Jim?? If so, it clicked as I activated the switch – then drained. 😕 Have you ever had a p/sw fail on this type of machine before? I have ordered one just in case.

ParticipantRe: dodgy zanussi FJ1354S
Always check for a communication fault between the main PCB and the user interface. (facia button board). The edge connector on the user board is a common fault on Delta 3 computer units arising from poor or oxidised contacts. Remove the facia, unplug the edge connector plug (blue wiring) then unscrew and gently pop the PCB out from its location. Clean the contacts of the PCB and gently squeeze the plug with pliers to tighten it. Refit the PCB back into the location on the facia panel, push the edge connector plug back on and refit the facia.
Should sort it. 😉HTH,
Steve.

ParticipantRe: wma tub
I agree with Petalpop. I almost always get the job at £110 – most customers can’t and won’t wait 2 weeks for Hotpoint even if the machine is still under the 5 year cover.
The customer makes the choice – no problem for me. 😀Steve.

But how do they function and why do they fail? Also, Greg’s horror stories…..any common faults to watch out for??Cheers,
