Re: Electrical Safety & Legal Legislation

I agree with you totally, Squadman. I religiously meggar every machine that I work on before and after the repair. (ok sometimes it’s really not practical with built in cookers for example)

I could not sleep nights if I thought that there was any possibility that someone could get injured by anything that I had left in an unsafe state.

I pray for the day when this industry is regulated. It SHOULD already be regulated in the same way that Gas engineers have to pass stringent tests to get their CORGI registration.

Watch this space… It will come.

Check level three pressure switch contacts.

Might only be a problem after a heat pause. Which means it may be intermittent and not show up on your test.

That was my first thought but physically the magnet looks fine and the coil tests ok.

I have just had a replacement tacho delivered for another customer so I will try that tomorrow.

    Thanks

Is CDSL a large network? I gather it’s part of Connect?

Anything that is in series with the mains supply could cause the machine to die and not come back again until the relay is re-energised. Check the mains plug, mains connector block, door switch etc.

I had a faulty 13A socket on the wall that threw me a few months ago.

    Re: Fridge Freezer Cold Location

I seem to remember that this problem was highlighted through BBC’s watchdog program some five years ago. I wonder if we can resurrect some information that was around then as it is sure to raise it’s head this winter with the promises of sub zero temperatures.

    Re: Fridge Freezer Cold Location

Is this problem not related to whether or not there is a defrost heater behind the fridge compartment evaporator?

I was taught that the twin temp hotpoint appliances have a thermostat with a cut in temperature of +4 degrees C. If the ambient is too low, the fridge compartment never reaches +4C so that the compressor doesn’t cut back in. On an appliance with a defrost heater the problem does not exist…

Or have I got that wrong somewhere…

Thanks boys. I will have a look at the TDS disk.

Should have thought of that, it’s a very useful resource and well worth investing in at only £20 or so.

    Re: WMA bearing change

Interesting comments about the Zanussi bearing changes. I must be doing something wrong as get in a right state getting the tub out. I turn down a lot of these as I have always seen it as a very time absorbing job.

Can someone perhaps talk me through the procedure on a washer dryer. I have only done a handful over the years. Practice makes perfect I suppose.

Jim, Is there a water level matrix on the right hand side as in a Fagor machine?

I had a similar problem a while back on an unbranded fully integrated dishwasher. It didn’t work from new and had the same symptoms. It turned out to be the connector plug on the overfill protection microswitch was on UPSIDE DOWN!

On a similar note, do you guys normally tackle Zanussi bearing changes or does the same apply? I HATE doing Zanussi ones but I do tolerate the Hotpoint ones. Come to that, I HATE all bearing changes.

    Re: WMA bearing change

Mike. We all must admit that it is a sod of a job, but any engineer worth his salt should be able to do it within two hours.

I always quote over the odds for this job and tell the customer about the five year parts gtee and hope I don’t get the job. I’ve done thirty or so of these over the last few years and have virtually always been able to complete the repair without too much grief.

I always fit the rear tub half as I can’t see the point of trying to get the bearing out when the customer has been quoted for a drum half and accepted the price.

Thanks Dave, I have ordered a pair.

Is there a part number source for Hoover/ Candy machines, perhaps a web site or cdrom disk?

    thanks again

Re: Down to earth cooker elements

    Thanks everybody for your help.

These two elements were wrapped in corrogated card with an Electru part number on the outside. Inside they were in original Hotpoint/Creda packaging complete with Hotpoint part number sticker and the normal Hotpoint “alternative part” leaflet… Surprised me!

I only ordered them because the Gen ones were out of stock.
