    Re: DSG/RepairCare Rate Cuts

It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if in fact there was actually no other company offering a cheaper deal on the sly…my experience of DSG and their work ethos is that of employing dynamic and enthusiastic young people who are given a fairly long rein to pursue their own ideas.

All very plausible on paper so they shoot from the hip with it, especially when it comes to cost savings…everything from moving an entire service centre across to the other side of London effectively making a 30-odd loyal workforce redundant, to employing someone in the central stores to split all the carbon brush packs and repack the brushes individually because ‘these engineers are ordering one and getting one extra to flog for cash’!

All in all they will obviously look to reduce costs…they do that in the good times too…then they will consider market forces and what they can get away with.

Repairers?….easy targets…especially when they don’t even ‘get their hands dirty’ dealing with them oh no, leave that to the intermediary (RC) who will have to buckle for the sake of their own business.

The ONLY way to change the situation is for a substantial number of repairers to say ‘no’, and given the reliance of most on that particular source of income that’s gonna be a toughie

    😕

Yes…very unlikely both elements would fail together considering they are never both in use at the same time! Certainly sounds like classic fan element failure, is it possible the other element failed some time ago?

Of course the only definitive way to check an element is to use a multimeter, look for about 20-30 ohms. Often you can see visually if an element has popped….

Not really, i think it boils down to experience looking at the styling and sometimes the format of the model/serial number?

Are you sure the float switch is not sticking…i’ve had a couple that had partially blocked in the float chamber causing the float to ‘bounce’ which in turn made the microswitch go west.

Other than that maybe a heater earth fault?

Re: Baumatic BDW13 Pipe disconnected at back

Nope…have seen this many times on various makes of dishwasher! The only cure is a new top feed tube but good news however is the particular pipe isn’t a very expensive part and the seal is re-useable. Be careful not to overtighten the plastic nut on the inside, really hand tight is good enough 😉

Are you sure it’s leaking and not overflowing from the float chamber?

Presumably you received a complete evaporator with heater attached? The heater can be transferred to the original evaporator with care

Before you go to the trouble of replacing the reed switch (they do occasionally fail) try squeezing up the connector onto the flow meter….9 times out of 10 that’s the problem. Sometimes there is a film of corrosion on the little pcb that carries the reed switch which can easily be removed with some very fine emery 😉

IIRC the basket on those sits in the middle near the front but i suppose it could sit wherever there’s a space in the racking….

If the pump stator was stiff to turn by hand then that’s the problem…if it has signs of leakage underneath the impellor housing then it would need a pump and impellor kit too.

Replacement involves at least partially removing the base to gain the room required to get the pump in and out…quite a fiddly job if you’ve never tackled anything like it before, and touch and go whether it’s worthwhile at 10 years old (depends entirely on the condition of the rest of the machine which only an experienced eye could judge really).

    Re: Living with an ISE10

Speaking as an indie who sells ISE appliances amongst others I can safely say we would never leave an install without testing the product first if only to check for water soundness of the connections!

We always give a demonstration of how to operate the equipment too…the ISE10’s being particularly easy to operate.

Re: ADP8322 OWI = optical water indicator

It’s situated at about the 3 o’clock position in the sump…it’s not really an optical device at all, it’s a rubber diaphragm with a microswitch behind it, protected by a black plastic grid which you see in the sump.

Quite common for them to get bunged up, usually you can clean them with hot water and a toothbrush, I usually use a piece of tubing to suck and blow water through the grid to give it a final flush.

If it’s particularly gunged then the whole assembly will bayonet out from underneath for better access 😉

Re: Old Ocean upright freezer (no model number)

The red warning light is a function of the thermostat (the 3rd contact on it) and i admit it’s unusual for that part to fail whilst the stat continues to control the temperature successfully.

If you can spend a little time with the machine listen to see if the compressor cuts out, then switches on again within an hour or so. If it runs continuously then it’s gateaux…you could try switching it off for half a day to let it cool down then run it on the minimum setting, if it’s badly worn that will buy you a little time especially if the weather cools off a bit but it’s the beginning of the end for it i’m afraid.

    Hi Chris

IIRC these suffer from sensor (ntc) problems…seem to remember they supply a kit of sensors?

The door switch is magnetic so if you hold a magnet in the right place against the cabinet you can confuse it into thinking the door is closed to check the fan operation…
