ModeratorRe: On Ocassion…
I know that we really need to disscuss all this little lot, face to face, hence the meeting after the training conference tomorrow.
But it would be a big mistake in my view to scrap the subscribers.
It really isnt about the money, lets face it a fiver a month is niether here nor there. It is the principle behind it that counts. When you sign up to join any group or organisation you have to abide by it’s rules.
Our rules are all tied up in the Charter.
Our future ambition should be to get all the membership to become subscribers as they are then totally committed to a very marketable
concept backed up by a regulatory body provided by the A.C.In fact it is my opinion that eventually unless you are a sub you should not recieve any jobs from Repairs @ at all.
I realise that it is still early day’s for making this compulsory but its not as far away as we might think. So we should start sowing the seeds of its eventual reqirement.
I fully conceed that at no time should we ever make it a condition of joining the site but we really do need to start showing a difference between subscribing members and freeloaders.

I forgot to say that obviousley we would have to demand our normal premium labour rates or somthing very close to it.
It just might be worth payin them a visit for a chat.

ModeratorRe: On Ocassion…
If this could be turned to our advantage with a lot more work at normal private call labour rates. it could help balance the equation.
plus I dont think that we have taken on board the fact that we would’nt have to guarantee the customers own part now would we.
So if the customer orders the wrong part, as the invariably do then we get paid twice and even better, on the second visit we might even get to supply the spare.
Bear with me here Kev, cos the more thought i give it the better it sounds
If we could really thrash this one out and kick it around a little more we might be able to move the idea further.
If there could be a financial advantage to the membership then why stop at unifit why not E-SPARE who are the single biggest supplier of spares direct to the public in the land.
If there is a viable way to develope this idea then it only makes sense to go with the biggest. Just think of the advantage we could be to them if they could also supply a fitting service. At the end of the day that is all we are to the likes of CDSL,MFI, etc.,etc, right now anyway.
You only have to ask Dave about the chat we had with the guy from masterpart at Grantham when you pair were playin that get pissed quick game with the D&G lads
He told us that E-SPARES returns where absolutely phenominal and that the spares manufacturers who supplied them had to live with it because of the volume of business that E-spares were givin them.
Dont get me wrong i’m still not sure, but we have to fully explore all possibilities no matter how rediculous it sounds at first hearing.

we must have posted that last one at the same time

ModeratorRe: On Ocassion…
We also have to look at it from the point that we are looking to be a player in that same market ourselves and when the new site frontage is up we will be trying our dammedest to sell spares direct to the public.
Our strong advantage at the moment is the fact that we, along with our moderators and members are trying to give as much advice and assistance as possible on what parts people need and how to fit them. If we feel it is too comlicated for the d.i.y.er we also advise them to go to Repais @
So I feel that the vast majority of people will look at our shop first for their spares, out of common decency and we need to give Dave every advantage we can to allow him to succeed.
At least we are only selling retail for now these guys have mainly been wholesales up to this point in time.
Plenty of our own trade have gone to the wall over the last few years and I always try to reseve my tears for me own.
The plain and simple fact is that we are (or soon will be) in a position to do the jewson lot so why give any advantage away.
I know you always try to look at the bigger picture but we have to hang on to every advantage we have.

I am not totally convinced as i can see that there might be repercussions by the parts suppliers who are actually buying space from us.
If another soap manufacturer tried the same thing you would probably blow them out of the water.
As you all know i am no web buff and therefore not too hot on net etequete an all that.
So if it ois something that is accepted practice between websites then far better that we at least get something for the members

ModeratorRe: Sibson Sept 2005
I did post a reply last night just as the site went down so here we go again.
You may not be aware that I have already been working on a power point presentation to outline the roll of the advisory council and I did ask Chris over a week ago if he would be so kind as to deliver it at Sibson.
He was on holiday last week, chilling out in cornwall I believe. So I think it’s only fair that he either accepts or declines the offer first.
Although we are not posting in this forum on a daily basis it should not be assumed that things are not being done.
As it then leads to embarassing situations like this.
If you remember the council was set up with three members not four, so that there would never be a hung decision. Alex if you remember was asked initially but felt that, at that particular point in time he was not able to committ fully due to the pressure of his own buisness committments.
But he did kindly offer to help out if there was any matters arrising where we might need to disqualify any particular council member for any reason or anomaly that might occur (on the subs bench basically)
Alex was quite rightly given access to this forum so that he could be kept up to speed on the A.C.
That time has now arrived, as it is my intention to stand down at the next meeting at Sibson due to the fact that I have quite recently been appointed as a director of UKW ltd.
It was naturally my intention to ask you Alex if you would do me the favour of taking up the vacancy for now, until the next round of elections for the post when you could be voted on to the A.C. in your own right.
However, the fact remains that whilst this council welcomes the input and the support of the admin team it takes and makes it’s own decisions on who does what and when. And if people dont like it then they can always vote us off at election time but not before then.
Sorry if I appear to be on my high horse but the whole point behind the A.C. was that it is supposed to be independant and have it’s own authority.
Alex, this is no way any reflection on your, more than adequate and eloquent capabilities as a public speaker. It is more to do with who rules in the A.C.
For the record, I have no doubt that no offence was meant and that things are sometimes done with the best of intentions but as we all know. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Sean
p.s. This might be a good post to save for the day when I’m on the other side of the fence and pissed off with the A.C. myself

For god’s sake how much would it cost the manufacturers to inlclude a soddin fuse on the machines control or display pcb’s, a fraction of one penny probably.
Your right though dave the responsibility lies with the customer but we all know where the blame lies. π

ModeratorRe: Where are we going?
Phil I would never doubt for one moment your comittment to UKW or DASA for that matter, as you are one of the stalwart’s that were there from the very first meeting and I know that your post is more out of concern for how UKW is viewed by the rest of the trade.
You just like the rest of us here in the war room do not want to see UKW accused of being a cloak and dagger organisation or a gentlemens club.
( now where have I heard that line before )But rest assured if it was only UKW’s intention to sell detergent they would have advertised for sales staff, instead of Technical Trainers and saved themselves a small fortune on the salaries.
The Technical trainer positions have only recently been filled, although as you say the trade has known about this for about three months since the advertisment went up on the front page of the site.
It has taken that long to process applications, arrange and carry out interviews in several locations round the country and inform the successful candidates. before the next meeting those candidates have to be trained themselves in how UKW wants it’s various training modules to be delivered and presented as well as arrange for kitting them out with the aides and IT equipment they will need to do the job.
I promise you, that you will not be disappointed in their choice of staff.
Sometimes a little mystery wets the appetite, it’s only when there is nothing but mystery that we begin to question if there really is any substance, or content to what’s about to come off.None of us have been disappointed thus far and i’m sure that the admin team will give as much information as they possibly can to those in TWR without risking spoiling the show at sibson.

ModeratorRe: Where are we going?
The thing is lads, I can see both sides of the thing. If everything is in the open, even at the embrionic or approach stage and things dont come off. Then the admin team would be accused of countin’ their chickens before they were hatched and in the process would lose an awful lot of credibility.
Phil you should be the first to agree, remember when you tried a move to vastly increase the membership of dasa and the cat was let out of the bag at a very delicate stage of the game.
Even when those you were talkin to had expressly asked for confidentiality. Then low and behold one of dasa’s own officers (not a council member I hasten to add) but an officer, blew the whole deal. All that hard work and negociation was blown out of the water because someone got the wrong end of the stick and went off on one.The truth is Martin you are the wisest of us all by staying a one man band and steering well clear of the corporate work because there are things happening now that really stink.
We do this corporate work and have always thus far been told to do the guarantee and insurance work at a knock down rate and our cream, what little there is, is supposed to come from the chargeable work.
We (those of us that do corporate work that is) are now faced by manufacturers who we have given a bloody good service too starting to stab us in the back by selling a policy to anyone phoning up with a chargable repair and then expecting us to do it at the guarantee rate.
what one manufacturer get away with today the others will follow suit with tomorrow. Even networks are jumping on the same bandwagon and CDSL are already doing this. NESN also have plans to do the same.
Basically our trade is being hyjacked. I know that there are many who view my rants like those of king Canute trying to turn back the tide. There are also those who think that they are untouchable because they have larger companies. It is my view that they are wrong and if they dont start to pull together they will be soon out of their button back chairs and back out on the road in a van as a franchisie, because these multinationals and networks wont be happy till they’ve got the f**kin lot.
The only ones who have tried to help the trade IMHO is UKW who at no charge to anyone have given us a means of communication second to none.
We saw off son of Hitler at NESN to the point where he is now nothing but an Albertros round the neck of Servicepoint.
I digress,
The point raised was that the admin team should be more open. We have had 4 national meetings and every single one better than the one before.
Each time you come there is somthing new, more information, more idea’s, concerns shared and acted upon, and a much brighter vision of a future. God knows we need one.If every idea was posted on the site there would be little need for national meetings and the whole point behind being a member of UKW is that we are a community and as such these meetings help us to bond and make that community ever stronger.
The next meeting will bring us a way for us all to start to turn things around It’s only a few short weeks away now, so keep the faith for just a little longer and all will be revealed I feel sure.
Apart from that it’s a good piss up with your mates. π
