    Re: Pat-UK

I see this as an oppurtunity to show the whole trade that UKW is a real community and willing to support it’s own. The message sent out to the trade would be a watershed in that there is at last an organisation willing to help it’s members in their time of need.

I agree with Ken that money is not the important thing but we should offer it anyway along with our continued support for this member. Perhaps it could be done by the AC to show that it is to be viewed as a double edged sword. In so much that it would be seen to not only dicipline members if neccessary but also support members against the more stupid and unrealistic expectations from some of our customer base.

It might also serve to show some work providers that they are now dealing with a community instead of a collection of individuals.

    Just a thought

Re: In The Absence Of The AC Forum…

Should we ask for a business address to be supplied along with a landline as a requirement. Customers need to have a solid point of contact with a service provider in the event of any compaints or legitimate enquiries.

We need our database to contain only cosher service providers dont you think, or it might reflect badly on UKW in the event of poor service recieved by one of our members.

    Thoughts please.

alexa wrote:THE LEMON and THE LITTLE OLD MAN AT SIBSON
The bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a $1000 bet: The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to an engineer. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money.
Many engineers had tried but nobody could do it.
Then this scrawny little man came in, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a tiny, squeaky voice, “I’d like to try the bet.”
After the laughter had died down, the bartender agreed, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the dried, wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man.
But the engineers laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and SIX drops fell into the glass.
As the engineers cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man, “What do you do for a living? Are you a Appliance repairer, Corgi, Merloni or what?”
The man replied, “I work for the G.B.Dar.”

    Re: Miele 5 year cover

    Hi Don,

Just to clarify a point, when you buy a machine with a special deal such as an extended period of cover as in the deal now being offered by Miele, do you have to sell the appliance during the offer period or does the offer remain with the appliance until it’s sold ?

Or if not, then why not, as it formed an inducement to stock the appliance in the first place.

    Re: insurance!!!!!

How do they sell an insurance to a customer for an appliance that they know has a fault on it to begin with ?

Christ I’d love to be able to buy my motor insurance that way, have a smash then go get a policy. 😉

    Re: WATCH OUT!!!!

May I start by saying that for the most part the M.F.I. contract has run as smooth as a silk lined codpiece, however this new method of supplying parts brings with it several concerns.
I can also see some other problems that might arise :-

    1) Will some customers try to fit these parts them themselves ?

    2) If the appliance is working o.k. at the moment, it’s a devil of a job to get an appointment with some of customers.

    3) Who is responsible if some customers in their curiosity damage the parts.

    4) May other parts be billed to your account in future, without your knowledge.

    5) What happens if more kits have been sent out on your account,
than you have recieved jobs for.

    Just a few thoughts !

Any chance of an update Ken, as to just how many W.P.’s have been willing to put their money where their mouth is as regard’s chippin’ in to the Corgi training inituative.

A lot of them seemed quite interested at Sibbson, but how many have backed it up with a cheque ?

It seems to me to be a missed oppurtunity if they are only willing to give jollies to the sellected few, rather than help to improve the skills of the majority of the trade, not to mention the UKW membership.

    Re: And so it begins…

To a degree you have already proved the ability to produce quality presentations as at Sibson with the powerpoint one you did there.
It’s only a case of including video, backgrounds, and voice over’s.

The hard part will be to convince engineers and their boss’es that they actually know very little about the washing process. Sure, we all know how to fix the machines but we actually know squat about either the complete process and even less about which powder to recommend for the different fabric’s and types of stains.

I thought I knew all there was to know until I went on a Miele course
and they showed a brief film show at the end of the training on detergents. probably supplied by P. & G.

DVD is the right way to go but how do you get the info across without insulting your average UKW member, who has convinced himself over the years that when it comes to powders, it’s a case of one size fit’s all. when we know it dont.

It’s goin’ to be a case of the age old addage of ‘it’s not what you say but how you say it !’

That said I’m pretty sure that P & G will have something on the shelf that you will be able to use.

Another thing, will be tryin’ to convince business owners to keep their engineers of the road for a morning or an afternoon to attend training on detergents. There will have to be some kind of sweetener in there for them if the uptake is to be successful.

Still i’m sure you guy’s have already thought this one through as well.

    best of luck

    Re: Dasa and UKW

I still get the feelin’ we might be chuckin’ the baby out with the bath water.
The real problem is one of a clash of personalites. Ken, You have had you own run in’s with the likes of Walter & Scott. Kev, You have issues with Mark & Jason. I know that these guy’s have done you down in the past and as they make up 4 out of the 5 officers it does’nt help matters.

Some of these issues are to do with DASA but a lot of e’m are not.
The other thing is that I do not expect you guy’s to be sidlined into takin seat’s as DASA officers, I know you are far too busy. Even if you wanted too. Dasa as you quite rightly say, would then be seen as a puppet of UKW.

Just a few well placed phone call’s from you guy’s would encourage others to challenge the existing officers for their positions. People I hasten to add who are strong supporters of both organisations. Remember we dont need total control, just a majority.

UkW does not need to control Dasa, it just ask’s for a fair shake from it.
and to take it’s rightful place on the council.

I can also see Dasa folding if there are no changes but once it’s gone it’s gone for good. Or I can see an even worse senario of where the manufacturers, and work providers take control of it through Amdea.
This move is the favoured option of some of the officers as they can then just walk away.

I think there is still some mileage to be had out of Dasa as it is in a better position to get trainging funds/grants out of government than a private company.

One other point you do not need to remind me of the help I have had from you guy’s I have stated as much several times in post’s I have made.

But I have a long and excellent memory and I fully conceed that you and Kev were the ones that did the negociating and compilation of the dasanet network but this was done under the Dasa banner when you were both still involved and believed in it.
Also the CDA work came to me down the Dasa route.

Another point is that you do not have to justify to me or anyone else the need to make a living out of UKW. God know’s you’ve poured enough of yourself into it at great personal cost. I just point out that this was not the original concept of its inception. It was just a completely personal view that the corporate side would have been far better off with a different name. As it’s detractors will use this fact over and over again.

As you can see lads I dont win myself any friends with my beliefs and I am just as strong at loggerheads when I go to dasa meetings.
But I am not a quiter just because the road gets a bit rocky and weather you believe it or not my committment to UKW is every bit as strong as anything I say or do for Dasa.

    Re: Dasa and UKW

Sometimes for the life of me I cant see what there is to be gained by the destruction of DASA. It is, for all it’s failing’s ( and I readily admit they are many) the only independant Trade association that the trade has.

UKW Ltd. is now to all intents and purposes a commercial venture and as the plans that were explained to me last week begin to unfold and come to fruition then ‘UKW THE COMMUNITY’ will by gradual degrees start to become secondry, out of the need to succeed commercially.

Let me say here and now, that I can see that a lot of what is about to unfold will be for the benifit of the independant trade. However I feel it would have been far better to have given the commercial side a different name, but that is your decision as it’s creators.

The fact remains that your motives from here on in will be called into question with regards the initial concept of UKW and where it is now heading.

Will people in time be asking themselves the question were we just used to create intrest in an idea just to make money for a select few. If so then are we any better than the Scoggins, Trubshaws or Hubby’s of this world.

I cant help feeling that it was an oppurtunity missed when you all decided to part company with DASA. As had you stayed we would now be in a position where most of the time wasters would have been removed and you would be in a position where you would have helped to create a stronger trade association. Where you could have encouraged people to get more involved, as you did with me.

Or is the idea to create a pseudo trade association as an extention of UKW Ltd. to be within the direct control of it’s directors. These are the questions that will be asked.

There are those in DASA who are dinosuars, there are one or two whose motives are questionable, but it’s only saving grace is that they can be called to account and argued about in open debate at any council meeting.

Or do I take it that it is a slow news week on the site so why not haul out the old DASA faithfull for another good slappin’ I’m begining to think that you guy’s are nearly as sad as me, because once upon a time you used to be original, where as I never was.

    Re: Repairs@

you need to have it flashin on the front page and news items on it too.
I have no doubt that when the penny finally drops, that they are missing out on fully chargeable work it will grow exactly the same as the daily traffic on UKW as a whole has grown.
You have to realise that most people cant believe it’s true ‘free chargable work’ 😯 their too busy lookin’ for the catch, to take advantage of it. 😉
