    Re: electrical certification

    Hi Alf,

In the IEE regs there is a great deal to do with the earthing & cross bonding of water pipes and any metal work especially in bathrooms i.e metal towel rails and radiators and the like. You might at first thought think “Well how does this affect a plumber ?” The problem arises when things like plastic water pipes and joints are introducuded to an existing installation, as they can have a detremental effect on the saftey and effectivness of the earthing on the installation. So to be safe it would be best to direct your friend to the nearest college of further education who can advise him of any statutory courses he may need to take to safely carry out this type of work. They can also adivse him of any training grants that may be available.

what about something along the lines of a flyer sheet the type that electure use to promote thier latest offers perhaps Dave Parker would lend a hand after all he wants his heads of agreement document approved and that could be another item for inclusion in Orbits first edition under STOP PRESS.

The more info the better !!
Do you think we might approach Tony Brown to do a little piece on how he has found DASA helpful in assisting him to complete his network requirements and how helpful he found addressing the DASA AGM to explain MFI’S service plans to the independant trade.
Perhaps Paul Greenberg of EAC could be called upon to submitt somthing along a similar lines.
    Just a thought.

ken I’ll be there on wed so we will know for sure if it’s going to change or not. Then we can put our hands on our hearts and say at least some buggers tried to change things for the better and get some value for the money we’ve all been ploughing in over the years!
I for one am not prepaird to continue to contribute to what has become in all essence……. Chris Hayters life pension fund.

    Re: DASA!

It would appear that there is unanimous feeling here in the war room, that Chris is well past his sell by date. There are however a few questions left to answer:-

    A) How many other members of the Dasa comittee/council are of the same opinion ?

    B) How many other comittee members are willing to stand up and be counted on, to support his removal from office ?

    C) Why has there been no feed back to comittee members of the recent council meeting with Chris informing him of the disatisfaction and disppointment felt by a substantial body of the membership of his role and achievments as director of DASA ?

    D) Should this be put on the agenda as a motion for the comittee meeting next week ?

    E) What are the protocols laid down in the constitution of dasa ( if any) or financial penelties incured, to achieve the removal of the director ?

This may all be academic if the reported anouncement to be made at the comittee meeting next week contains his resignation due to retirement / failing health.
But what if it does’nt ? Do we wait till the next meeting or the AGM or simply vote with our feet !

    Views please !!

    Re: DASA!

I’m not to sure that the membership is getting value for money for it’s £30 K a year. I have to be honest I personally think that at the moment the membership, who let’s face it foot this bill, are not getting 30 pence worth of value from thier contributions.

I am a relativley new to the council and have been a DASA member for only four years but when I joined there was at least orbit being circulated and giving a brief description of the work DASA was undertaking on behalf of the members.

I think Chris is resting on laurels that have long since withered away. Even so I realise and am mindful of the respect, and regard in which he is held by members of the council for starting DASA off in the first place.
Let’s face it the man is not well and he say’s as much himself. This is the main reason that no one want’s to be accused of kicking him when he’s down or be the cause of a relapse of his condition.

Meanwhile DASA is dying on it’s knees while we stand around being so gentlmenly waiting for some other sod to plunge the knife in.

In the last couple of DASA meetings I have seen him in a majority of one
Do you remember when he told us that we were all breaking the law of the land by talking to one another about rates and that this would contravene the anti competition laws.

As you may recall I asked for a vote of the atendies of that meeting about wether they thought it contravened any law and Chris was the only person in the room that thought it did !

Do you remember how hard several council members had to argue to get access to the DASA website to see if it could be improved in any way.

Gentlemen, someone this out of touch with the membership can not be regarded as an asset, but a liability to any future DASA may have !

Alex has the right idea! especially for the more faint hearted amoungst us,
Inform him that his services will only be required on a consultative basis
as and when required due to his ill health, offer him a much reduced retainer and find someone younger to do the job I’m sure there will be plenty of takers for £30 K per year for a part time job with a few meetings
    to attend.
Because make no mistake, it would be far kinder and less embarrising for Chris to do it that way, than to wait for the next AGM and let him be faced with a call for a vote of NO CONFIDENCE from the floor, to which he would have no honourable option, other than to resign.

Let’s face it on it’s quietest day UKWHITEGOODS has done more to inform, help and assist members of our trade than DASA has in the last several years mainly due to any new idea’s being strangled at birth by Chris.

Sorry if this offends, but it happens to be the truth as I see it !

    Re: LGH

He phoned this morning, and I managed to get him just before midday. I suggested he contact ken at uk whitegoods who would be able to provide a one stop shop but,
He gave the impression of being very reticent of contacting organisations saying that they(AON GROUP) wanted to form thier own network of independant agents.
I think its a fishing exercise at the moment just to see how many of us bite. He did say he had spoken to about 20 agents so far and that he was approaching DASA members first, so expect a call in the next couple of day’s lads.
He said that AON group were associate members OF DASA, i’m not too sure about that, but you dont argue with a gift horse.
He also said that they had just done somthing similar with browngoods and said that it appeared to be working quite well. Tried to get k on the phone about miday to report back but could’nt get through I think his phone line was at melting point 😆

    Re: LGH

I realy dont think that our labour rate is the main issue. the real problem is centralised spares sourcing at the right price. We are all aware that the biggest part of the bill to insurance company’s are spares used on the job’s. That’s why insurance company’s like boxed prices. As individuals it’s almost impossible to cover the risk at the prices we have to pay for spares. If we had a way of paying the same price as the likes as connect we could wipe the floor with any network in the U.K. The other main sticking point is communicating with the work supplier, almost in real time. I know Ken is working on this one and several networks are already showing an interest in his idea’s. Is it time to form our own network from within the War Room to solve these problems and get the package up and running and saleable. We have to be able to compete with the likes of cdsl and nesn. luckily that isnt a problem but the one thing that they beat us on is selling ourselves.
    Just Thinkin out loud.

    Re: Bernstein!

The latest in the bernstien saga will take some beating !

The new management in thier infinate wisdom are only seeking payment for spares used on job’s completed before they went bust. We had a call from thier accounts dept. today requesting payment for spares used on job’s that we hav’nt been paid for.
The fact that they owe us more than twice the amount we owe them did’nt seem to register with the girl chasing payment.

Fortunately for the girl I was out on call’s today, can you imagine what my reply might have been had I answered the phone.

My staff suggested that if they required payment then perhaps a court action might be the best way to proceed.

I could do with a day off and a good laugh with expenses. 😆
