Re: What’s the most stupid things customers say?

Just picked up an answerphone message:
“Got a Bosch Classix tumble dryer making a lot of noise and a burning smell. Could you call me back with your call out charge etc. Wondering if it’s just a fuse.”

Think customer may not be quite clear about what a fuse is.

    Re: LG F1222TD w/m

Nightmare job. Isn’t that one of those where the fuse (8A?) is buried along with everything else in the silicone? Wasted time trying to repair one of those myself a couple of years ago. Was the big capacitor which blew fuse. Replaced it and fuse but there was still a problem and I never got to the bottom of it.

    Re: PCB componant identification

I had it from a Hotpoint trained engineer a couple of years ago that the eeproms don’t lose their programme easily. I’d have a go if I were you but follow the tracks & wiring back to see what caused the blow out before you replace the components, otherwise they’ll blow again. I’ve never seen one of the varistors blown up. Are you sure it’s not just smoke from the adjacent triac?

Don’t usually read these threads but followed a link from newsletter.
If peeps would just not fall for these crap contracts then we could all make a decent living. Those who subject themselves to this sort of slavery are effectively doing a good sized chunk of the work that has to be done by someone. Thus the pool of work in which we all share is reduced >>> “work dead” for many.
UKW has done much to right this situation but more needs doing. How about UKW/WTA funds a(nother?) targeted mailshot to all WG traders (sole and SME) to direct them to this site?
If they did / have done recently, I might even pay my subs. 🙂

    Re: Thermistor

I think most Merloni are about 25 – 30,000 at room temp. That’s just my personal experience, I’ve never read any technical specs on them. Nor have I taken temp readings when checking them. But a ball park figure is all you need really, because if they’re out and causing errors then they’re probably way out.

    Re: Thermistor

On the other hand, you may find that some manufacturers of washing machines do use the same thermistor on different models. It’s not much use from the point of view of swapping them around but it is quite useful to have an idea of the room temperature resistance of some common manufacturers’ ntcs so you know when they’re mis-behaving.
Could be worth having a sticky somewhere giving known values of these things as it’s not easy to find out for most.

in reply to: Second hand spare parts?? #374516

    Re: Second hand spare parts??

There are plenty of regular sellers of secondhand spares on ebay and I reckon’ some are scraping not too bad a living. Hotpoint GEC type motors were fetching up to about £25 a while back. Seem to have got a bit scarce lately though. Problem is the plethora of makes and models and it’s not always simple to know what will fit what. Whilst that is to some extent the customer’s responsibility, as a business you would have to accept returns (although if the error wasn’t yours, you would not have to return the postage and you could probably charge a re-stocking fee.) All that said, I reckon I could get more out of parts than I could for a recon (mind you, I’m not George ;))and with a bit less hassle. No space to do it though and got other kippers to grill anyway.

Re: IND IWDC 6105 all lights on

Usually it’s the connection getting disturbed or broken inside the wire at the business end because it’s jumping about all the time the drum’s turning especially during spin.
If it isn’t connection, you can test the ntc by watching the resistance change as you warm it up. But probably cheap enough to change it anyway. I think Merloni ones used to be about 25k at 20C last time I looked about 5 yrs ago. That’s the wash ones.

Oh, come on Jim, I know you love your job but you could afford to slow down a bit and try some new things. How about fishing? 😆 Leave a bit of work for the rest of us 🙂 .

iadom wrote:Just had a ‘very’ quick glance through that thread Mike. Which post in particular refers to all lights flashing on an Indesit dishwasher?

Well, it’s not a dishwasher after all but anyway that thread is worth a very detailed reading by all and could even still be relevant now, even for this machine. You need to read between the lines and learn. You don’t learn by having the answers handed to you on a plate!
I was talking to a chap this very afternoon (not a customer) who, when he found out I repair washers said, “So do I.”
He asked me if I’d heard of EMW. 😆 .
He then related what a very good service they had provided to him a few years ago and how when his washer failed again after a couple of years they had immediately said, “Oh, it won’t be the board this time. Our boards don’t go wrong again. That’ll be the brushes.” (Which was correct.) He said, “You guys must be pee’d off with them taking so much of your business.” 😯
It’s OK for those of us near retirement to slow down learning new stuff (but not stop entirely.) But for those still saddled with responsibilities, learning is the only way they’re gonna stay in business.

Good post Lee and I’d just like to add that you don’t, “make the same amount.” You actually make a lot more because you don’t have the outgoings associated with covering those extra calls.

    Re: Recommend washing machine.

It depends how much more you’re paying for the Bosch. Also depends how much use it’s going to get. Beko are cheap but they are also not that bad and the parts are cheap too. Good compromise if you ask me.
Anyway, see you fixed your Lux now. (Shame? You should be demoted to the public area for three weeks 😆 .)
