If there was a klaxon in the motor that might explain the “strange noises at the start of the spin” 😆
    Sorry,just couldn’t resist it.

    Re: Zannusi FJS1225 Burning smell

If a garage does the MOT on your car and next day the brakes fail I don’t think they are responsible in law unless it can be proved beyond reasonable doubt that the fault was present at the time of the test.
Now I think the law relies on the test of reasonableness a lot. If the house you’re working in has modern circuit protection devices installed (RCD) then this, IMO, far out-performs the one off test you are doing with your megger as it’s there working away effectively constantly checking the appliance all the time it’s switched on. (With the important proviso that you’ve checked earth continuity as without that being intact a dangerous voltage could occur at the cabinet surface without causing the rcd to trip).(And even if a person then touched the cabinet wet through from the shower and in bare feet the rcd should save them).
The danger arises in houses with only an old style fusebox.
I agree with what Kevin(?) says about built-in appliances and indeed all wired in cookers.
If the plug is behind the appliance and inaccessible it would be wise to advise the customer to get a switch fitted above the worktop. Sometimes you just know you’re wasting your time though.

    Re: Zannusi FJS1225 Burning smell

This use of megger discussion is of great interest to me. I was taught to do earth continuity test first followed by 500v for 5 seconds between earth and live+neutral together. At the time I was taught, it was reccommended to disconnect any electronic components from the circuit. At that time that meant the module, usually two tags and a multi-plug. Obviously this is totally impractical in today’s world- you’d have to disconnect half of most machines!
The reason you join L+N (AFAIK) is to avoid a damaging current flowing between them. Now it seems to me that if there’s a short to earth via motor or heater for example then, when you do your check, current could flow at 500v through part of the circuit, possibly damaging sensitive electronics. You would assume that the damage had been caused not by your testing but by the fault condition before you got there. So you would come across damaged modules more often than people who are less strict about following the rules.
Since most houses have an rcd fitted these days which trips at 30 mA after a few milliseconds,it seems to me that a machine is more likely to be damaged by megger testing than by tripping the rcd.(IMO).
    Comments/wisdom invited. 🙂

Thanks for your replies, Martin and Dave.
Wonder what happened to that thread about putting everything on one disc just for UKW members? I’ll go and have a search for it later but I’ve got to get out in the sunshine now and do some urgent maintenance on my bike. 😀

    Re: Indesit WD10UK

Sounds to me like a simple case of a connection overheating because it was loose/of inadequate design. I’d think you would find it would work again if you can manage to create a better connection.

Bl**dy bikes undertaking cars! Rules of the road should apply to everyone, not just motor vehicles.

Bet you go on the pavement when it suits you as well 👿

Ha ha, Pleased to see I’ve got some bl**dy motorists’ backs up! 😆
Seriously, I usually overtake, as then when you open your door in front of me the negligence is all yours. Undertaking should be left to those in that profession. Actually I think the rules do apply to everyone but they can’t catch us cyclists because they’re in cars too! 😆

Only go on the pavement when it is permitted (shared use) or it’s in the middle of the countryside with no one using it because they’re all in their cars making the road very dangerous. (When I use the road in places like that it just gets you drivers agitated because you have to negotiate round me). Just common sense.

Would suggest waiting to see what replies turn up later this morning and if still no joy ring Tony at EMW (board repairs) for advice. See http://www.emwelec.co.uk

    What is this disc?
Is it of use to those of us with only a small turnover?
What other discs would be useful to us?
    All advice gratefully received.

Do you mean that it will not fill, or that it will fill but not turn the drum on wash?

Re: Is it just me or is the whole……..

I realise there are sections of the community who are impressed by the size of your vehicle and the size of your ad etc. Down here though there are a lot of people who make a point of not judging a service on that basis and I enjoy working for such people. I do sometimes get surprised reactions from new customers but I get a distinct impression that people who have used my service once make sure they don’t lose my number!
I don’t have dependent wife or children though (a conscious decision more or less) so perhaps I don’t need to rush around half as much as a lot of you others.
I enjoy getting around by bike and I always found driving a bore and felt guilty about spewing fumes over the beautiful countryside round here. Now I’m able to enjoy my travel between jobs. I sometimes think of it as getting paid to go for a pleasant ride in the country.
Another aspect of this is that it has made me consider very carefully how to optimise my coverage. When you are using a car/van you’re inclined to go greater distances and spend more time on the road than is really economically sensible. I always get as much info as possible from the customer about the fault so that I can have the best chance of a one-visit job and I plan my trips carefully. This sometimes means customers have to wait a few days till I’m round their way- very few are not prepared to do this and I willingly let those that aren’t seek help from one of my local competitors whose numbers I freely advise of. I’m not interested in helping people who want to live in a remote country area like this and yet still have all the instant service benefits they had in the city they came from. Such impatient people don’t usually stay long in this area.

I would certainly recommend others of you to try doing a few local jobs within a mile or two of home by bike. It is utterly pointless to sit in a traffic jam for twenty minutes to get to a Hotpoint brush job a mile or two on the other side of town. Why not do as I do and sail nonchalantly past all that. You can park a bike almost anywhere and if it embarrasses you to be seen by your customer on the bike you can leave it round the corner- they’ll never know!

I’m pretty sure this is a flow through type and is best accessed by removing the r/h (from front) side panel which is easily done if the machine is not too badly built-in!

Have a look also at the module if it’s the one where the module fixes to the base of the cabinet with a 7mm headed screw. I’ve come across a couple where a pcb solder joint to a relay had burned out leading to no motor action.
Could see an intermittent contact there causing problems.
Tacho coils on these often go o/c. Possibly could be intermittent contact at point where red wires enter plastic tacho casing or at motor plug.
(When coil goes o/c you get spin on wash âž¡ jumps).

Re: Askoll circulation pump no go, in Hygena d/w

Well I “soak tested” this one dry for about twenty minutes and it began to get a bit warm but didn’t give up, so I reckon it’ll be OK back in its own environment. The thing that stopped it originally was a wooden toothpick not wear n’ tear as far as I am able to tell.
