I don’t know why so many of you feel under-valued. I get a lot of respect and recognition from the vast majority of my customers. Perhaps that’s because I’m totally independent, though. Never have had to lie about my opinion of a manufacturer or their products in order to keep my job. Truth is, it only took 6 months training twenty odd years ago to set me on this road and I’m still learning every day so I find it hard to think of myself as a “professional”. That’s a term I associate with doctors, lawyers, teachers and tarts. This is a niche business in that it’s escaped regulation. I think one reason is that the trade is small, there’s not that many of us, some of us only have one foot in this side whilst doing other stuff (e.g. plumber, electrician) to earn a crust. That makes it difficult for the authorities to pin us down, to define who we are and what we do, and not worth spending millions on to try and regulate us. I’m happy for it to stay that way.
The odd rogue is going to be there, come what may. I reckon that started in the 1970’s BC, not AD. For the most part, customers don’t need the BBC to tell them there’s rogues out there. They’re all too well aware of it. Once they know you, though, their fear of trying new people works in your favour. As has been said many times on here, do a good job for a reasonable price and you’ll set yourself up with a good customer base in the long term.

I don’t think SEME keep much for major appliances now. It was good while it lasted 🙁 .

If drier (usually) or wash element is below 40 Megohms insulation resistance, machine will shut down with start/pause flashing.
See pp. 84-86 of general service manual (599352317.pdf) available on mediator. Drying it out might clear it for a while, and maybe you could get it to stay up ( 😯 ) by using dryer regularly?

I think the dryer timer switches the neutral side to the elements. You could have mains volts between earth and any drier terminal when in cool mode.

They run for 10 mins usually and then shut down with E10 when they realise they’re not getting any condensing water because the green coil’s gone o/c. (Although it may show OK when you test it cold.)
Another possibility is the dryer ntc in the tub to condenser hose (bottom of m/c) has shaken one of its orange wires to destruction.

Had a DWF30 (? or something like that) which had a 1cm hole blown in module around relay terminal. Smelled strongly of burning.

£85 + Vat is £100. If that’s retail, and you get 10 or 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} off for trade, you’ve got room to do the job for £140/£150 and guarantee it for a year. Some of you guys would complete it in less than an hour; I’d probably take at least 90 mins. & two cups of tea. It’s more interesting than staying home and watching daytime TV. You keep the customer, it’s half the price of a new one. (And the new one would probably have had a welded tub too.) There’s a good chance the new tub will last longer than the two years the old one did (they were unlucky), may even go 5 years, so you’ll find yourself getting recommended from that corner.

Great! Win win all round. I’ll get on and give that e-bay seller I bought them boards off some extra positive feedback now!

ParticipantRe: Hoover Washer Blown Board
Way too high for a brush motor. Anyway, it sounds like it’s a fault which only occurs every two or three washes. More than likely it’s a wire in motor loom or in motor itself that’s shorting out when vibration moves it. Had a Nextra motor once where this happened due to motor connector hanging loose form its bracket leading to movement in the wires.
Quite likely that board will come back unrepairable :(.

There has been some discussion recently about similar occurrences of things working in diagnostics but not during programme. How about search for wording such as “during diagnostics” and similar. I know gandh1 had some problems like this. Think it may all be down to a disconnected wire somewhere but not where normal logic would lead you to look, or to a component with marginally low insulation.

ParticipantRe: Zanussi ZWF1427w E60 & E63.
If it’s the board, then it’s more than likely just the relay needs replacing. Figure out which one completes the heater circuit and desolder it and solder in a new one. About £1 from RS. Wouldn’t bother testing the relay itself as they usually test OK even though sufficiently iffy to trigger a fault code.
Once m/c running OK again, you can confirm your suspicions by opening up the old relay and inspecting the contacts.
Was E61 on an AEG I did.

ParticipantRe: Zanussi ZWF1437S sealed tub bearing change?
£85 + vat is at least more affordable than £150 or so for a Zanussi.
Not that I’d be likely to advise a customer to spend even that much, unless they were just going to go out and get a new one with a sealed tub 👿 .

I give them my full moral support. 😀
Obviously we need them to chase such rogues around and keep them in business by handing them cash.
