dpr1974 wrote:Anyway my reason for posting is this, can brush motors be tested out of the machine via the mains, i realize there are electrical test to determine the state of a motor but having a visual test that customer can see would help (especially today). How i was thinking was the live would go to the field windings and neutral to the brushes, i realize the motor would kick start at full speed so a heavy foot would be needed.

Why are you wanting to test the motor “live” in 30 years I have never needed to do this always used a meter. 😕 If you are doing this because the customer does’t believe you then a word of advice, walk away. Whatever you do you will not please them, if they cannot respect your professional judgement.

When I answer the phone I say, “Hello, Phils Domestics”.

I think I might start saying some invented business name like “Goatbusters Abattoir” to see if anyone notices 😆You get that too huh? I thought it was only me that had folks asking. For years I thought it was that my cordless phone had some sort of delay before you could speak?
I have a call reader facility on it and on those calls I see marked “International Call” I pick up the phone and say “Guard Room, Buckingham Palace, Duty Sergeant Smithers speaking….” And they say…”Is that Enterprise Service?”
😕 😕 😕I have been known to say, “Bannana bending factory, chief bender here how can I help?” :rotl: suprisingly very few pick up on it cos they don’t listen 😕

Dunno guys what the answer is as we are dammed if we do dammed if we dont.
I usually inform the customer that if they have got the wrong part then I will have had a wasted visit and there will be a extra charge, also if the part is wrong then I insist that I order the correct one at my price. If the part they have bought is OK then I fit it but inform them that there is no Gtee. which they would have had if I had supplied it.
I am seeing more of this going on now than I have for the last thirty years, plus I am getting more and more wiseguys telling me they have found the problem on the internet and this is what is wrong, no doubt been on UKWG :rolls:
Another thing that I have noticed that is on the increase is the amount of punters who have got the back off the machine when I arrive something they don’t tell you when they phone up. This one really pi*ses me off because you don’t know what they have been up to, you then have to prise out of them what they have dismantled. One woman told me the husband had only taken the top off, when I switched on there was a bang, the pratt had taken the wires off the pump and just left them lying, strange my megger never picked this up 😕
You have not to be afraid to walk away if they have been medling too far, after all we are the “last responsible person” if we work on it, bit of a bug*er as it costs us money and time to go there in the first place. 😥maltheviking

Girl once rang me and asked how much to fit a door seal to a Zanussi, saying that they had bought the seal themselves 👿
Ok it will be so much says I, when can you do it and how long will it take to fit, 10mins I reply. 10 mins, are you sure? YES
So I turns up to find the old door seal removed, first thing she says is my Dad spent eight hours trying to fit the new one and I have to ring him so he can see how you fit it :rolls: :rotl:
Guess what my reply was to the dimwit , answers on a postcard please 😆maltheviking
ParticipantRe: The Common cold, ought to be outlawed!
Sorry to hear it’s so bad Alex, if it’s any consolation I have had a chest infection for six months 😕 , the quack took x rays, blood tests only to come up with the conclusion that I had a virus 😥 They will not give you anti- biotics for it, but I have just had a case of the Chicken pox and they were rather concerned as I still had the chest infection, so out came the anti-b’s. I am now running on all cylinders.
Apparently the chest infection is all around the UK, so just stick with it my old son 😉 just don’t cough to hard and have a little brown ring pop out :rotl:maltheviking

The mains then tripped out, reset RCD & manually advance timer to spin and all o.k so I took the timer button off & cleaned all the c{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}$p from around it then tried it again twice on the same cycle, problem solved no more tripping. Dont you just love clean customers?
anyway thanks for the helpful replies: Andy.Ahh the old sticky knob problem :rolls: :rotl:
Can’t understand why it was tripping elecs. I presume the insulation was good when you tested it?February 11, 2009 at 8:37 pm in reply to: Whirlpool DWF 406 4 flashes and continuous beeping #277143maltheviking

4 flashes is usually “not draining” on Whirlpools, I think this will relate to your model

What does your megger say? as Phidom says the spider may be cracked and damaged the heater although they would have complained of it being noisy on spin, check the insulation with water in the machine, fill it by hand to be on the safe side 😉
